Is Dayz over?

Recommended Posts

As all of us know Dean "Rocket" Hall is leaving Dayz. When Notch left Minecraft the game became an autistic catastrophe of horses and dildos. What will happen when Dean leaves? Who will be the new leader? I have a prediction. Bohemia will fuck it up the moment he is gone. Dayz will dwindle to nothing as it becomes the WarZ all over again. Dean will make a new game a decade from now. You will see it in a short article in the back of a  PCGamer mag. You will be like "Oh that guy! Who is he again?".

Maybe I am just being pessimistic. But seriously how is this going to turn out for the better? For anyone? Also why now Dean? The game is progressing quite quickly but even then we are nearing quarter 2 and we don't even have functioning rope yet. We will be lucky if we have hunting by July. The game development has hardly begun and already this?

Even Eurogamer half-heartedly said this would be a blow to the community. I have a feeling this will "blow" a lot more than just us. Maybe I am just screaming into the wind.

I am not trying to make drama in the forums but seriously I just need someone to sit me down and explain, *why the fuck Dean*? I read the article. All I saw was "I don't want

to tell Bohemia what to do. I don't like yelling at people. I quit." What the roller blading fucking Christ is going on here? Hold on I need to raise my window binds and check for flying pigs. BRB.

He said that he was going to leave at some point after alpha multiple times, even months ago.

Hunting is already in internal testing and is expected to be in experimental soon, I saw the video today. Will see where we'll be in 10 months, also Rocket stated his flexibility.

I do not understand all this visibility today, it must be because of some stupid paper writers.

I just repeat what I wrote in the other thread...you know...the one about the same topic with 40 pages...

About abandoning the project:

Where did I say I was "abandoning" the project?
For starters, it's not my decision who leads the project - it's Bohemia's. And secondly, it needs to be considered who does what at key points in a project's development.
The question I raised is if I am the right person to be leading the project from the end of the year, not that I will be abandoning the project.

About the "flaw in the concept":

I am honestly completely perplexed as to why this has caused so much anger/hate-mail. I cannot think of a single thing I have ever done that I have not looked back on and identified the flaws. It is such a natural process of reflection for me, that I thought it was just part of general common sense.
I look back on the basic design of DayZ, and I can quite clearly identify core aspects of it that, if changed and mastered, could improve the experience. Alpha is not the time to be changing such core fundamental elements of the game. But they are things you remember and discuss with people to see if they are solvable in the future.

Just because DayZ was commercially successful does not mean it is the perfect multiplayer game.
We can make DayZ absolutely perfect, seamless, optimized, and running fantastic in every way - and it in my eyes it will not be the ultimate multiplayer game.
Absolutely, 100% I'm proud of what the team and I have achieved. Very proud! But I'm aware that many of the limitations we face at a core level, exist because of my mistakes as a designer at the star

About some other things:

To clarify a couple of important points:

  • I'm still the project lead of DayZ, and there are currently no plans I'm aware of to replace me in that role.

  • Ultimately, even if I did leave - DayZ belongs to Bohemia and there is a very large and ever-growing team of people working on it. While I appreciate the sentiment, It's rather insulting to them to suggest that without me the whole project would suddenly implode. The community, Bohemia, and myself have plenty of time to make plans for the long term development: but whatever happens I want to be back with my family in 2015.

  • Bohemia develop's and sells DayZ. I contracted to assist them with this process on a yearly basis. I certainly don't get all, most, or even the large share of sales money. That money goes to the studio which is used to fund development - as it should be. This is used to hire really skilled and awesome people - it's those people who develop the game and I've been working with those talented people to realize the vision.

  • I miss home, I want to return to New Zealand to be with my family after being away many years. It is my intention to do that next year, but I'm flexible. I said the same thing internally last year, this year I'm being more deliberate about it so everyone can plan for it.

  • I'm very critical of the work I do, I believe that's why I can do work that ends up quite successful. I'm very critical not just of the delivery of work I do but the base concepts behind them. I like to share and discuss those critiques because I think that makes me a better designer through the process.

How do you treat those people who have given you the ability to make that vision a reality as well as made you a very wealthy individual?

Depending on your definition of the word, I am not a very wealthy individual. While I get royalties, these do not represent a significant amount of the sales. The vast majority of the sales go back to the owner of the IP: Bohemia Interactive.

You turn your back on them and make plans to leave

I have made the following things clear:

  • I intend to return to New Zealand, to stay longer in the Czech Republic will essentially mean seeking citizenship and making my life here away from my family

  • I have made myself available to Bohemia as long as I am providing value to the project, however I have highlighted the importance of my role being appropriate to the project's state.

  • At some point the skillset for the leader to deliver on the current state of the project may differ from the skillset I have. I have mooted that I believe this point will occur at the end of the year, Bohemia seem to larely agree with this. However, there is flexibility on both sides to see what needs to happen will.
You call people who have legitimate concerns over wasting their money on a broken game

No, I did no such thing. As hurtful as your comments are to me: they completely undermine the efforts and commitments made by the large team who have been working very long hours on DayZ for some time. Saying that my departure from a lead position will not deliver on the promise is directly saying these people do not have the capability to deliver.
Say what you want about me, but the team does not deserve such hateful comments. My ego is not so big that I think the project could not carry on without me. While I believe I am useful and I contribute value as both a designer and a leader, it is unfair to think that others will not be able to meet that role. I need to balance the value to the project of me remaining with the need to be with my family and return home.
The greatest gift I can give the project, and the team, is a longterm vision and culture that would survive long after I am gone. If I have done my job right, I will have forever changed those involved in the project. That is leadership, to grow a team to the point they no longer need you. I'm proud of the people I have worked with. I am proud of what they are accomplishing. And I am proud to say that I can see a day when I am not needed. That is very hard for me to accept, but I know that the day must come. That day is good for the project. That day will not be a pleasant one for me.

You disgust me

I make no apology for saying that, eventually, I need to return home to be with my family. I made commitments to my family for many years, long before DayZ, to return to be with them. I've clearly stated I am prepared to do whatever is needed for DayZ, even if that meant staying on even longer. But I have also clearly stated that I want to return home, to be with my family. I think this is fair, and I fail to see what else I could do in this situation.
Perhaps rather than expressing your revulsion, you could explain how you would prefer the situation be managed?

What an utter disappointment, you deserve nothing of what you have gained over these last 2 years.

One thing that I have gained, that I feel I have earned, is just how hateful people can be towards you when you open yourself up to them. I had always thought that being open encouraged people to engage in dialogue no matter how angry they are.

And again about leaving:

If I am as bad as you are making out, then surely it would be better that someone else take over the leadership?
I have not:

  • stood down; or

  • announced a date that I will stand down
I have said that:

  • I intend to return home to New Zealand at the end of the year

  • I question if I am the best person to lead the project when it comes out of Alpha, given that I might not have the skillset required, the local knowledge (including the language), and that I will have spent three years working in this environment
These points are all worthy of debate and discussion, hence why I've always been honest and open about things.
I'm not quite sure how in one breath, someone can state I'm terrible and at the same time criticize me for suggesting it might be best for someone else to take over the leadership

And finally about why now:

Back in June 2013 ( http://www.pcgamer.com/2013/06/21/interview-dean-hall-dayz-standalone-mountaineering-everest-game/ ) he said:

I know it’s hard to predict, but how long do you see yourself working on DayZ?
Hall: I think right now, realistically, the next 12 months. Particularly if a console port came in—or ports, if there were changes to certain consoles. I’d say I’m probably being realistic there, to deal with that.

Great summary LaughingJack...

I hate all the panic and hate the community throws at him. He's been the most transparent and dialogue engaging kind of person I've seen when it comes to development and future plans.

I hope he can see through the many rotten apples... Behind it is a massive community that support him...

You do realize DayZ wouldn't exist if it wasn't for Bohemia, right?  All Mr.  Hall had was a concept on another companies game engine.

The sky is falling again.

Jesus H Fucking Christ people, stop with "The sky is falling!" threads. . . All this doom and gloom.

Every day I log in it's something new, or a rehash of some shit that has been discussed to death.

KOS

Hackers

Optimization

Dean going back to his family

"the core premise"

etc..etc..etc..

Every time someone finds something they don't like about the game or every time there is some change in their world view when it comes to this game, it's suddenly the end of the world and everything is going to shit.

You sound like a bunch of kids who's parents just got divorced.

Grow the fuck up.

Dean "Rocket" Hall just have the idea!
Now Bohemia Interactive have this idea!
So...

Dayz dont need Dean Hall anymore.
Dayz is like make a cake: If i give you my recipe, you can make a cake to...
So, dear Dean, you can go now to the mama's arms and cry a river about how bad you fill about the monster you have created!

yes i know, dayz now is only, loot guns, search noobs, handcuf noobs and torture with Slayer song in background.

DayZ will Never die!
Bohemia Interactive can do this!

This cosmic dance of bursting decadence and withheld permissions,
twists all our arms collectively, but if Dayz can win, and IT CAN,
then I'll still be here tomorrow to handcuff you yesterday, my friendly friend.

Peace.

We should stop trying to convince people that nothing will happen to DayZ. Seriously.

We should instead start telling them to leave ASAP because "DayZ will be dead within days!1!!" so they disappear and play Minecraft or RUST or some other ... and we don't have to bother to tell those ... over and over what we've already said a thousand times.

Yeah exactly, everyone needs to stop sucking Dean's dick and ask themselves why they make a special case for him over other devs of great games. Nobody's jumping up and down about Arma 3 and congratulating one guy over it.

Also, back in OFP (the first version of Arma) there was a zombie mod and have been in every version since. The issue is that they should have redesigned dayz from scratch giving it a new engine to work with rather than struggle with the arma code. It's a no brainer that you make the game look good and follow from this concept, you would have a winner of a game. Zombie games sell like hotcakes but DayZ doesn't look the part.

I don't feel like i'm walking around in a zombie apocalypse. Where are the corpses, or parts of corpses that should be all over the place, the overgrown nature of buildings as nature takes its grip back, etc. Dean isn't anymore talented at coding than anyone else I would imagine so it's really about the concept and idea and how he wants it to play out

Now he's leaving it and taking that with him, who's going to take up the direction of where it's going to go.

ME!! PICK ME!!!! OI!! OVER HERE BOHEMIA!!!! I CALLED IT FIRST!!
