McGarnagle 94 Posted February 25, 2014 (edited) Given some recent...unpleasantness relating to unprofessional journalism, I had a thought. I didn't come from the mod, and I didn't buy this game because of Rocket at all. It was the Rock Paper Shotgun Dayz players, as well as some choice YouTube videos of the mod, that convinced me to give it a go by making the game look and sounds like a lot of fun. So far, I've had a blast and met some really cool people, at an age in life where the process of making new friends tends to slow down. So, what made you buy the Standalone? Long time mod player with 1000+ hours under your belt, a "scrub" like me, or something in-between? What made you want it, even after all of the Alpha warnings and Rocket himself saying not to buy it? And second, has your mind changed since then? Not just about the purchase, but what features you're most excited for. For example, I was really excited to try out aircraft, whenever they make it in, but now I'm most excited about the prospect of a simple bicycle, and trying to survive the finished game with no better vehicle than that. Now, I'm excited about the campfires, and hanging out with my new DayZ buds in a low-key setting, to break up all of the running and not-shooting. Anyway, I referenced the Eurogamer article to show what spawned this train of thought, NOT to start the shit-storm back up. There's already a thread for that, so go poison that well if you're still butthurt about it. This is a place to talk about why we wanted the game, and hopefully, why we still want it. NOTE: If a thread like this exists, I couldn't find it using three different search queries, with and without quotes. If you can find the same topic elsewhere, and it is LESS THAN A MONTH OLD, then please feel free to ask this thread to be locked. omgwtfbbq (DayZ) 1069 Posted February 25, 2014 (edited) RoosterTeeth, as I did with the mod. They made videos on both mod and Standalone. My friends told me about the Standalone, and Roosterteeth sold it for me. That's what made me buy it; I still play it because I like the tension this provides. Tension + organic exploration/discovery is always exciting. Edited February 25, 2014 by omgwtfbbq
Elle 562 Posted February 25, 2014 it's all about the apocalypse for me. open world sandbox games are a ton of fun and I had been searching for a couple of years for a good one with zombies. I followed the development for about a year while playing a couple of other titles (they were either CoD with a couple of zeds, required serious micromanagement of some group, or just boring overall). this is the game I have been waiting for and so far (over 350 hours since 1st week of January) it has been the best 30 bucks I ever spent on a game, alpha or not. can't wait till its finished and I'm not too worried about rocket taking off, the game will get finished or it won't, its a hell of ride the way it is. applejaxc 2500 Posted February 25, 2014 1. I refused to believe it could be anything less than perfect2. DayZ (mod) provided a certain "Permi-death" experience that (even with all the CheatSpeak hacker and crying baby-man admin problems) wasn't replicated in anything else. Crafting "Survival horror" titles (IE 7 Days to Die) have an initial learning curve that, as soon as it's passed, stops being difficult very quickly. DayZ has been a fairly consistent exprience.3. There are few other games that cause quite the rage quitting DayZ does when you snipe a server-hopper and his little cheating friends.
yorkmorgan 191 Posted February 25, 2014 I think I speak for a lot of people when I say I watched all of Frankie's videos of the mod, heard that a standalone was going to be released and decided to wait for that instead of dealing with having to download arma which I had no interest in, particularly as dodgy websites kept claiming that the standalone would be out within a month, for about 6 months. But seriously Frankie should be given a sack full of cash for the profile he's given this game, a full blown ad campaign would be less effective.
minime1000 78 Posted February 25, 2014 Got it for a few tf2 hats. Would have never spent my own money on it as I figured it will turn out like most early-access games. Was right.
dallas 5195 Posted February 25, 2014 (edited) Given some recent...unpleasantness relating to unprofessional journalism,I think you're being too harsh on Eurogamer, people are just overreacting because they are bored. I got the mod for free, I had bought ArmA 2 and OA already and was kind of done with ArmA 2, when DayZ mod made me reinstall it. I had secretly hoped someone would come around and make some game mechanincs for ArmA 2, so I could experience something similar to the Urban Dead 2D browser game, only in ArmA and in 3D and DayZ mod pretty much fit exactly that. I bought the Standalone, because I was curious and because the mod had revived my interest for ArmA 2 and had provided me with several hundreds of hours gameplay at the cost of a free download. I though, if I buy the Standalone, I'll be giving back to Rocket for creating DayZ mod and Bohemia for the engine, that easily allowed custom content, such as DayZ. I worried that I was kind of done with the whole zombie survival crazy and to some extend I was, but I still allowed myself to enjoy all the new features fully. I've already put enough hours into the Stnadalone to justify the $30 and will continue to follow and play the game from update to update. djporternz 644 Posted February 25, 2014 (edited) I had ArmA 3 throughout the Alpha for that. Love the game and loved the ride with BI, so when I saw they were releasing another game the same way, it wasn't much of a leap to give it a chance as well. So far I haven't been disappointed. Even took the step back into ArmA 2 and the Mod. All I'm going to say about that is I've discovered I know a lot more swears than I'd admit in public! :) Edited February 25, 2014 by DJPorterNZ
McGarnagle 94 Posted February 26, 2014 I just noticed my thread title, lol. Why made me not grammar good? Rephrasing sentences + no-sleep = bad man. Some interesting responses. I think it's pretty impressive how much Frankie contributed to the community, basically through free advertising. I did watch some of his videos when I was dithering over whether to buy it, but after the whole Rocket interview thing, I really didn't want to tempt people to talk about certain"hackusations," So I left him out. He's really good entertainer, though. No doubt about that. Thanks to everyone that replied! I think you're being too harsh on Eurogamer, people are just overreacting because they are bored. Okay, I'm going to try and separate the "Rocket, RAWR" portion of this from the "Eurogamer" part. Please, bear that distinction in mind: Eurogamer editors, unlike the average moron online, are expected to do a token level of research on any subject before writing about it. This is a basic principle of journalism, and really, any kind of writing. Even novels and comedy articles about dick jokes. If they can do it, Eurogamer can too. Dean's plans to move have been readily available online for months, so regardless of how you feel about the whole thing, Eurogamer either failed to do basic research, or knowingly ran old information as an groundbreaking exclusive. And not just them, Rock Paper Shotgun, whom I normally love, carried the same story with the same lead! You're right that it wouldn't be a big deal if idiots didn't exist, but I can't hold masses of faceless idiots accountable for their actions. I CAN boycott Eurogamer and spread awareness about their lazy/fraudulent "journalism," and I'm going to continue to do so, as long as it isn't spamming other people's topics. If they run a public apology (they won't) or acknowledge the whole thing in any way, shape, or form, I'll stop and never bring it up again, at least not as something to hold against them. Is it worth it purely for DayZ mod, since the SA is probably a few months away from significant changes to the gameplay? (<-----not a complaint!)
