What do a mute person do?

Recommended Posts

OFF TOPIC: (update on my personal hurdles with DayZ and social anxiety; ignore/skip if you want)

a little update on my anxiety adventures. I finally spoke to someone in game; it was only one word... He was a friendly in that one town where most people seem to spawn. He had a gun with no ammo. He greeted me, followed me as I started to run and freaked out a bit wondering why I wasn't speaking.

Eventually there was voices in the distance and M4 shots. He tried to speak with the guy in the distance and tell him he's friendly. He kept asking me if I was with the M4 guy so eventually I worked up the nerve to say "nah" to which he asked why I wasn't talking since he heard my mic. I felt like telling him i just wasn't good at talking... And then he moved ahead as I was looting a building only to be shot by the Russian 'bandit' with the M4, taunting him before finishing him off:

"you're friendly? you're friendly? *Gunshots* Well I have a gun and now you are dead because I am a bandit..... Now tell me where your little friend is."

I heard no reply followed by more gunshots... It's sad because with a little more time I probably could have worked up the nerve to say more.situations like that are so rare most encounters are with KOSers, people who also don't say anything for whatever reason, or friendlies who shoot me in paranoia, or I get separated from/run away from. Before this my best experiences were with friendlies that requested me to be bait or just looted bodies and ran from sniper fire with.... Probably my own fault for the lack of interaction. I'm still trying to learn the map so a lot of time is spent wondering around the empty wilderness followed by instant panic attack when seeing the first person in 4 hours of playing.which then results in KOS by them or run away, log out by me.

Yeah having that kind a problem is not always the best for games like this. I wish i could tell you how to get past it and word up. I think it is just a matter of jumping in to it, nothing bad can happen to you really so not much to be scared of from my point of view, but i know you see it different.

I'll get some grief for saying this, but the game attracts a lot of youngsters who've never had RL interaction with women. I think you've had the bad luck to meet some of the more immature players.

This is not a blanket accusation towards all young men...

I was going to make essentially the same comment.

My crew is basically older guys, 30+, although we have a few in their 20s who act like proper adults. I think I can unequivocally state that not a single one of us would be bothered by having a lady in our midst; hell, many of us have been in clans with them before so its nothing new.

The problem is that the teenage kids who have never really had interactions with women are the biggest purveyors of blatant misogyny and keep most of the girls their age from even getting involved in gaming. If the girl isn't skilled at all, they ride her mercilessly until she quits; if she *is* skilled, and tends to kick ass, they verbally abuse to no end until she quits, or quits using voip entirely. (This is all first-hand from watching my teenage nephews, and hearing the kids who work for me tell me their stories.)

It's not just this game, its all games. More so on console, of course, just due to demographics, but it is everywhere.

Shit, I wish more women played games. Then they might actually "get it", haha.

A lot more women play games than people think. A recent study showed that about 50% of all gamers are women. So where are they? Many stick with single player games where they don't have to take all that sexist crap about going to the kitchen and making sandwiches, and those who have the guts to game online often don't give away their gender. My gf games to some extent and often people just won't believe her when she says she's a girl.

I too wish things will change in the future. It's hard to find games for my bonus daughter (who's also a gamer) with characters she can identify with, that aren't stereotyped or rape victims.

There would be simple ways to keep ingame chat from being ignored. Either the font size needs to be increased or there is a faint signal to be heard whenever a player sends a chat message. The sound needs to be clearly identifyable and not too loud. A tiny ticking sound would be enough. not optional but mandatory. therefore there needs to be one or more alternatives. One might be a colored dot that would flash shortly at each chat message, it would have to be positioned where it doesn't disturb but at a spot where it wouldn't be missed. Another one could be a 2 pixel wide vertical line at the very left or right of the screen, flashing for just a few milliseconds.

I think that there are many possibilities to increase accessibility. None of them would automatically disturb the gaming experience of any gamer.

It is a shame that people with disabilities more or less are constantly ignored, looked down at or pitied. We are part of society and we have money, money is what makes developers sell games. We love gaming the same as anybody else.

Don't leave us outside. We don't deserve it and all the ablebodies out there, you'd miss out without us.

UPDATE 2 at this link   :D

I am a mute person, as in i can't talk at all as i have no voice. So my question is, how will i go about playing this game as i can't talk to people. The other day i was running around in some small village not to far from devils, and i heard someone tell me to stop and don't turn around. I did, i dropped my axe, my backpack. Then this person ask me to reply to him, so i typed i could not speak and would be using text, and before i knew it the bastard shot me and said "stop lying"

And to day i was at the far east air port and two people with rifles ran just in front of me without noticing me sitting in a bush. So i typed "hey please stop" And ofc they would not do it, and i sort of felt i had to take them down, but before i could i 3rd player came and told them in voice to stop and lay down... guess what... they both did with in a couple of sec. I just slowly backed up from there and left the area.

So i guess maybe what i am asking, is there really a future for a mute girl in the game?

Sorry this happens to you.  Good people usually think someone may not have a microphone.  I only turn hostile on people who run away full speed after I asked them a fair command.   What happened to your voice?  Can you integrate a digital text to speech into microphone.

Text to speech would be cool game feature as the technology is actually usable now but would probably add a ton of lag to the servers and people would just grief with it spamming crap like {}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}{}.

while all these suggestions have been good and could be a solution, the truth is most people will still be hostile even if you had some sort of voice chat. People just like to kos in this game.....i do not know why

I think that Text2Speech could be the way to go, There are free methods that allow to enter some text and then let the tool send spoken Text to Dayz. One free solution might be "Balabolka". The op could make the game windowed and put Balabolka below the game screen. If there is need for spoken Text it's no problem to alt-tab over. Even premade phrases would be possible.

"Autohotkey" is capable to create hotkeys with premade phrases, too.

I meant any app outside of game that can transmit for her to the mic.     There might be a way.  Not sure.

Problem is that all of this takes time, and that time you sometimes don't have. But other then that it would be very cool to have a good tool in game.

I would fire little shits like that. They would not deserve someone as open and friendly as me to work for or the women that I would employ in equal rights. they deserve to fail in life or learn to live in a group.

Either use chat or have a group of people to help you out. Because face it, playing alone this game is not very fun. So mute or not mute, team up with someone.

I'm sure a lot of people have offered, but you're welcome to play with me (PM for steam name).  I even am in a group that are fun and like to mix it up a lot.  Also, don't gotta worry about flirtation (from me at least, I'm married.)

I still think we should have text-only sidechannel, with no distance limit

It builds a sense of community, it helps players stay with the same server (which teamspeak does not)

It makes it easier for Admins to keep tabs on what's happening

You may see someone on line for weeks, then you say 'hello', you dont have to team up.

You get word when a bunch of strangers show up

It's not a gamebreaking thing - only speech over sidechannel was bad in the mod - text sidechannel was good and useful

and not misused

Mainly it's good for community
