Ambient Noise increases with amount of Players?

Recommended Posts

So lately I've been playing on the experimental servers testing out the new stuff and exploring.  With the introduction of larger sized servers I've noticed something and I want to find out if others have experienced this as well.  I know quite a few people have complained about hearing random bandaging, cans opening, gates, ammo splitting, etc... when no one is around.

What I noticed is that I can be out in the Northern Woods far away from any of those possible noises and I still hear some but the more people join the server the more I hear it.   I logged in when the server only had like 3 people on it after a Restart I assume.  Things were fairly quiet some random noises I moved around exploring the woods looking for interesting things.  As I checked the Player List seeing the server fill up I heard more and more noises.  I stopped for awhile in the middle of nowhere to eat and drink in a forest and it just seemed like a constant stream of ambient noises when the server was close to capacity.  Normally I guess I ignore it or tune it out because I'm running, looting, killing zombies, or whatever but today stopping and paying attention made me wonder if other people have experienced this.

Has anyone?

Is there a algorithm in the game that is supposed to play more ambient noise based on how many players are connected to the server?

Or is there some sort of global echo for those noises that's causing everyone to hear parts of them and the reason I hear more is because the more players the more they are somehow causing that echo?

Just to confirm, this is a separate issue to the ambient sounds that animals trigger? For example, you can hear gates, cans opening and even zombie groans and it's from the rabbits running about the place.

It's creepy as fuck, yesterday I was sniping near Kamyshovo and I was going full blown paranoid because of these random sounds. I mean those rocks aren't exactly the safest place to begin with, and I like little tension every now and than, but that's too much.

It's the reason for this daylie dialogue I have with my Sqaudmates....

"Heard ammunition....."
"Aha..."
"Heard someone drinking...."
"Okay..."
"Ammunition again."
"Yes."
"Yes?"
"YES! O_O"
"OMGWTFBBQ YOU HEARD IT TOO? T___T"

Ive noticed this happen a lot; ever since the Standalone was released in fact. The sound of ammo being split is by far the most frequent for me, followed by those "underground zombies" and of course cans being opened. There doesn't seem to be any localization.

There are one or two sound effects shared between the mod and the standalone that I don't even know what they are, and I've been playing for a year and a half lol. The main one being a "distant" sound effect that sounds industrial or mechanical. I sometimes confuse it for gunfire from a distance. It only lasts for a second but is hard to describe, but I hear it all the time. I'll try and look for a video or recording of it; post it in this thread and see if someone can tell me what it is supposed to be.

I find it more noticeable the more people in the server.

The increase in noises have been directly correlated to the number of cans of beans consumed by the total population of the server using 6-sigma methodologies...
