Should NV/IR be implemented?

Night Vision and Infra Red (heat source) implementation?

153 members have voted

  1. 1. Should any form of NV/IR be implemented, either through goggles or gun sights?

    • Yes. These things are in real life, so they should be.

    • No. They provide too great an advantage.

I really want to see a solution to gamma/brightness before we even think about NVGs.

Until then nights are an uneven playing field.

If you had read my post it would have reflected pretty much what you are saying, just adding in the reasoning behind that.

it's alright. Some kids can't be bothered to read on a forum where...well...reading is really the only thing you do lol. All they care about is getting their opinion shoved in there :P

As far as nightvision, you make some good points.

The only way I should like to see them implemented is if they have a ree-DICKYOOLUSLY quick battery consumption. I'd be fine with them if that were the case.

I voted for yes.

I know some of you will go on about how overpowered they are, and the advantage they give to the owner.

But then again why should a person that survived months be at the same level as a person that been alive for a day? Longer you survive the more benefits you get.

There is a chance that this player dies and some fresh spawn gets that gear, but this is dayZ these things happen everyday we just got to live with it.

Super rare, incredibly fragile, need to be cleaned on regular basis & need at least 2 batteries.

Couldn't disagree more. All that does is pander to people who actually don't want to play night but will because they can use NV to make it more like daytime.

Actually yeah you guys are right. Give us flares!

I am not arguing your right to have that opinion, but I think your logic is flawed.

Why not have those who have survived longer have better accuracy with weapons like CoD does as people "level up"? Why not stop those who have just joined from picking up powerful weapons, forcing them to only use axes and pistols in the first few hours of their survival? Why? Because they are silly ideas, but they are an extension to your logic. Unless I have somehow read your comments wrongly, I think that there should be no benefit other than what you have looted over a fresh spawn. However NV/IR provides such a massive disparity between players, regardless of how long they have been playing.

Yeah there is a moon, and not only a moon but stars too. In fact it's actually easier to navigate around Chernarus at night than it is during the day as you can use the stars just like sailors used to.

I am not sure whether the latitude of the star layout is based on the geographical location of the server (in the same way the timezone can) but I believe it's always based on the Northern hemisphere. Sorry Aussies, Newzies and South Africans, no Southern Cross only a Pole Star.

that is awesome. Its almost night now in the server at my region. Will check this out in a bit.

Hope you enjoy it.

For me night time DayZ adds such a lovely extra depth to what is an excellently deep game that it's a shame to see gamma exploits for the SA and (for the mod at least) the proliferation of NV gear. This is primarily the reason for this thread. I understand that many people like the idea of them and there is certainly a good argument for them to be included, I just worry that the subtlety and differing strategies involved in the night time cycle will be lost as you will have some with a huge advantage over others.

Oh, and this is a generic comment to all who have replied. I'd just like to thank you all for replying in an open minded way. This thread could have easily turned into a slagging match but there have been some good arguments both for and against.

From my point of view I am at least heartened that while not in the majority, my view regarding NV/IR is not restricted to a fringe selection of players.

Yes, the should be in the game... BUT restricted to first person, and with a restricted field of view... Just like in real life.

My opinion is that this could be balanced, at the moment there are to many players on night time servers turning gamma right up to counter darkness.

The night vision goggles would give people the incentive to play fairly however to balance it out, you could make them require batterys that even at pristine condition need replacing after 30 minutes.

Thus your balancing it so even people with this vision need to go hunting for items to maintain the advantage.

I fully agree any implementation of night vision should have a draw back so it's not an I win situation, and I like the idea of having it in the game at about the drop rate of LRS right now, damaged night vision should also be cracked or have dark patches that don't function. I wouldn't mind a hand-held digital camera or camcorder of some kind that provides a limited civi grade nightvision that only sees a few feet ahead. It would give another use for our batteries, and as Outlast has proven, is a creepy alternative to flashlights. You trade the range of a flashlight for some of your visibility, but also don't become a shining "PLEASE SHOOT ME" beacon. Shouldn't replace the flashlight, mind you, but should be lootable.

I would appreciate having an item to counter the darkness, maybe not IR, I saw what happened to that in the mod and i think it would be set up for failure.

In my opinion night vision is required, simply to encourage people to play on night time servers as well. Of course it should be extremely rare. Because it's such a big advantage, it would encourage people to gang up on that person.

Just curious, do you know that when you say "should be extremely rare", you are actually ensuring that it is "a big advantage"? The advantage is just one person having and another not having. With the existence of gamma (which will never be solved, so don't think this to be the case), night vision should just be available around for those who don't want to use the slider "inappropriately".

Right now, there's no point to night. If I play with my gamma where it belongs, night is like I flipped my monitor around. It is unrealistic that I'd actually be bumbling about in that kind of dark. Since that is unplayable and I don't want to futz around with my gamma, which is on a fine setting, I just have a monitor with good contrast, I use another "exploit", which is to pick a different server. One where I can see things and interact with the environment.

I absolutely respect what you want to go for here, but technology doesn't allow the experience to be universal. Anything put in the game that isn't as good as jacking up the gamma, will just put players at a disadvantage.

This is true, but perhaps someday they will lock the gamma?

I think adding in any form of nightvision would be bad.. in SA at least. Give me new forms of lighting instead. Starburst flares, spotlights, etc..

I can see Rangefinders with NV/IR working without breaking balance. But definitely a no to NVGs or any other goggles that enhance your night vision while still being able to use a weapon.

Adding to the night vision discussion, how about making it so if a player wearing NV looks strait at either a flare lighting or a flashlight for too long they will become disoriented, have lowered accuracy, and can't see sh!t. This could allow players who have a flare/flashlight, to shine it onto the hillside to blind possible NV users.

Also, make it so that the beams of a flashlight are visible.

Cherno/Elektro would look like "20th century fox" logo. It would be AWWWWWWWWWWWESOME!

Balance has no place in dayz. Happen to find an IR/NV? lucky you.. you now rule the night as opposed to those running around with a flashlight.. happy dayz

That is quiet a decent idea.

I've sort of worded it a little strange, lesson for future read through the post before actually posting it.

The idea of better accuracy has a nice sound to it.

Either way if they do add NV/IR, the difference in balance will be up to the player using them.

They are not going to shoot for you, nor will make you better at game, lets face it they are there to make it easier for you, but you also have to be capable of using them to your advantage.

P.S. love the way you replied to my post, no flaming, cursing, trolling etc. from what i've seen on the forums lately people seem to be a little frustrated, and write quite aggressively. But this was quite nice to read ;)
