At which point is it justified to shoot a man that's surrendered?

Recommended Posts

After a recent situation where my group were attacked

We took the gun from a passer by and told him he could loot our attackers once we left

A few minutes later we spot 2 people following us with the gear and guns we left behind, we stopped them, one tried to punch is and ran away so we let him go

The one with a mosin tried to get a vantage point on some rocks then surrenders when he sees there are 4 of us

He says he's friendly and I go to talk to him, he then stops responding and we tell him to leave 3 times and we don't shoot him if he runs the opposite way

He keeps saying "what"

But he understood enough to say friendly and don't shoot

Suspicious he may be friends with the guys who attacked us ( he logged in next to their bodies with a mosin)

We give him a warning then shoot him as he says nothing after we said he can go with his loaded weapon

From a friendly point of view, when would you have shot him and why? And do you think what we did was right?

It sounds to me like he wasn't willing to communicate properly, in my book that is grounds to consider someone a threat.

That is a good reason to shoot him, if nobody answers after the warnings you gave him hes either dumb, trying to get his friend to kill you, or just trying to kill you outright.

After a fight with another band of survivors, I give people one and one warning only. If they don't comply, they get cuffed and looted (If cuffs are an option), or they're fired upon. I don't take too many unnecessary risks, which is why my current survivor has lasted this long. That and the large group I help manage.

Hmm, this sounds suspiciously similar to the youtube video I watched earlier. I would have just disarmed him and let him go on his way in that situation. If I didn't have handcuffs however to disarm him and he didn't drop his guns, I would have shot him as well. Kinda strange that no one in your group had handcuffs to secure him.

If someone isn't responding they are likely talking to people on 3rd party VOIP, usually trying to organize people to kill you.

when you say 'justified' I think you are making the common mistake of giving a fuck about what others may think of you.

Does executing them feel like the right thing to do for you?

If it does then do it and move on, if it doesn't let 'em go and move on.

Definitely do not worry about justifying anything to anybody ever.

I would never let someone go who has a firearm and ammo. Take one or the other then release him. Especially him being unresponsive, you are just asking for trouble.

I agree if someone does not communicate properly (and is able to do so) then i consider them a threat.

100% agree. When someone not communicate, he is a possible threat.

Only my personal point.

Must I kill each possible threat? No.

I will only kill a possible threat, when he came in a position where I lose the control.

In the military there's a thing called 'hostile intent' which are legal grounds to engage with lethal force.. meaning something you perceive to be an imminent threat to yourself or others.. like guys running around with weapons equipped in your immediate vicinity.

Some dude maneuvering to a vantage point above you with a long range weapon definitely qualifies. What's he doing up there, looking for berries?

Fact of the matter is that in a gunfight, fractions of seconds matter, and in this game (were it real life) if i felt threatened in any way whatsoever I would blast these guys without a seconds thought.

Just having guns is obviously going to be common, but when a guy has it equipped and in his hands theres obviously an intent to use it there and that's enough for this guy.

If someone wants to be friendly they'll make that fairly clear. Running around your flank with weapons drawn is the exact opposite of friendly behavior.

Also yeah, who cares what anyone else thinks. Is anyone else's opinion going to get in the way of your survival? It wont in mine.

I have to be honest, the other night, Saturday, I killed four relatively unarmed people:

1.  Person 1 - I caught him in the lumber yard in Berezino.  Was wearing a gasmask (I probably should have shot him for that, but at least it wasn't a Payday mask).  I was behind a wall and asked if he was friendly.  He immediately pulled out a fire axe and started hunting around for me.  I told him to put the axe away and he refused.  I popped around my wall and gave him both barrels then moved on.

2.  While exiting the train station, a woman sprinted up on me with her fists up.  I shouted "whoa whoa whoa, back off" as I ran out into the road to get a little space, I swung around with my shotgun and asked if she was friendly.  I asked if she had a mic.  Nothing in response.  I asked if she knew how to communicate with the keyboard.  Nothing.  I told her to back up (she kept inching closer to me over and over again as I backed away).  I stood in silence for about 10 seconds, then shot her with both barrels.  I felt a little bad afterwards because I wondered if the person was trying to type something but I wasn't going to stand around in the road on a 40 person full server.

3.  After shooting the lady in the street, I moved to the little wooded hill on that end of town to wait for my buddy who was coming down from NEAF.  When he arrived, he and I went up towards the hospital.  As we made our way, we saw a guy in a bright red tee shirt all the way over at the barns near the construction site.  We made out way over to tell him to get rid of the shirt since we saw it all the way from the woods.  When we arrived he had changed into an equally obvious raincoat.  We got him to stop, offered him advice (including the fact that the town was totally picked over).  He knelt down and did the friendly wiggle.  For THREE MINUTES.  It was funny first, then he didn't respond.  We told him to leave.  We told him he was creeping us out.  We told him to stop.  We told him we were tempted to shoot him.  FInally we just headed for the construction site and made sure he didn't approach.  But it was strange.

4.  Same day, one hour later, same server, I was on the roof of the construction site.  A new spawn was on the third floor.  I told the person I was friendly and that there was a holster and bullets on the roof.  I waited for about 3 minutes as the person moved back and forth on the third floor, popping into the open repeatedly and looking at me and my buddy.  Finally my buddy went down and confronted him (we saw him at the sandunes with another player and suspected he might be bait) he just stopped and stared up at me.  With a shotgun and an M4 pointed at him, we said that he needed to either leave or communicate or we would fire. I counted down from 5 and he didn't budge.  We shot him.

5.  Capping off the strangness, after having had enough of the weirdos, we went down and decided to head for Polana to get out west and away from these crazy bambis.  No sooner had I gotten out to the crane when some lady with no clothes on but a pair of sneakers hopping like a track star with her fists up came flying straight at me from the coastal orchard.  Without batting an eye I said over the mic "FUck you." and unloaded both barrels on her.

I had honestly had enough.  I am so tired of people who cannot or are unwilling to communicate with others.  IF you can turn on a PC, start steam, and buy a game, you can use a damn keyboard.  If you can't or won't, and you are creepy or strange, you will probably die and you deserve it.  You aren't really anything but a player controlled zombie at that point.

Thanks for the replies

I just felt bad for shooting the guy as he did surrender

I just don't know why he didn't just leave when we told him to

He had the chance to keep some gear

I'm all for being friendly, but only so far.

Someone stalking you, shoot or warn them off. Warning someone is a generous act in DayZ, failing to heed a warning, justifies more permanent action. Told someone, "If you run away, you're safe. If we see you again, we'll assume you're tacking us and is hostile. You get one chance."

"If there's doubt, there's no doubt."

I put a guy in hand cuffs and told him if he answered this next question correctly I would give him a weapon and let him go.

Who's gonna win the Super Bowl?

His answer,

"Well the Broncos are looking pretty good"
