zhrike 264 Posted January 28, 2014 (edited) Head inland. Be patient. I've lost multiple characters over the past few days to glitches and resets. Each time I've geared up, healthy, with multiple guns and ammo after a few hours, including ammo boxes, pristine high-end clothing and backpacks. It takes some time. It's not supposed to be easy. Today had a new character due to a glitch death last night. That character was totally geared, too. So, started over, geared across the entire map, got hit by zombies and bled every time. Took forever to find an axe. Finally got one. Then a .357, but no ammo. Then a shotgun. Then another shotgun. Then a MOSIN! By this time I had gone from Berezino to far NW. On top of an industrial building ... saw some bullets on the wall. Wasn't close enough to see them in vicinity or cursor. Moved closed and glitched through the wall and died. Did it suck? Yes. I started over. This time in Kamyshovo. Again, run inland, hit by zombies, bleed every time (did they get stronger? If so, good) in our boxing matches. Scavenge ... loot houses, nothing. Loot more houses. Drink water. Rinse, repeat. Find a can of tuna. w00t! Keep going. Now I am back in the far NW, pristine gear, a fully loaded .357, had an m4 with a 20 clip and another 30 rounds, and then found my mosin (and the angels sing), for which I had been carrying a pristine compensator and 120 rounds. Dumped the m4 after taking it apart and throwing the pieces around in the grass. Healthy, full, plenty of food, water sources ... now it's killin' time. Work brings rewards. I do this on whatever server I happen to connect. Sometimes it's full, sometimes no one is around. Each time is the same. It's slim pickings in the beginning, but gets better the further from the coast. Edited January 28, 2014 by Zhrike
Element47 2480 Posted January 28, 2014 you should not forget, that youtube videos you watched are heavily edited (and often staged) - they dont show you the 20 boring lives spent searching for food, they dont show you the hours of searching and searching.. they show you the 15 minutes of action, edited for effect, not the actual gameplay from spawn to fully geared...
BCKane 5 Posted January 28, 2014 I haven't had any problems finding food so far, the only trouble is forgetting to eat before the "i'm hungry" comments pop up. I would head to construction sites and hospitals, they tend to have more food than you need.
GpB311 236 Posted January 28, 2014 Something quite a lot of people recommend is simply eating the food as soon as you find it in order to keep yourself healthy and save space for carrying other things.(Unless youre already full/stuffed) I personally always have some food in my pack if I can because Im paranoid that I wont have it when I need it, but thats just me and is much less a problem once youre a little more established in the game.

commanderbash 102 Posted January 28, 2014 (edited) man out of all the post only a couple are actually trying to help this guy out, Masteryopa, there's no vehicles in the alpha yet, so anything with any vehicles is the mod that this game will be based off of. if you've never played it'd help to start by reading a new player guide. or youtube one, get to know the basics. when you load in, run along the street until you find a sign with a city name in Russian, either in the steam overlay, or on a second monitor/smartphone google dayz chernarus+ to get a google map of the game, find the town you're in, and find the nearest well, drink from that well until you're full and you should be good for more then long enough to find food. you'll find that certain buildings have more food more often then others. currently any brick building is a safe bet, not all houses spawn loot there's places across the map that are very likely to spawn specific things like certain guns, attachments, food, and backpacks. once you get the hang of it you'll have a great time. good luck Edited January 28, 2014 by commanderbash
Happy- 41 Posted January 28, 2014 Hey, i just started playing this game. And before i start i want to say that i KNOW this is alpha and the game is not finished, so im complaining about the current game. I played on 5 different servers for about 4 HOURS. I've ran past about 8 villages and into EVERY HOUSE of those villages, only to find like 2 boots, 1 empty can of rice, sunglasses and flashlights. thats where i stopped reading.
Felony Inhibitor 59 Posted January 28, 2014 Yep they will start to spawn less and less as intended. Once we get more improvised weapons in the game they will lower spawns of most of our gear we use now. This game will change and not for the better utopia most want.Which is absolutely fine by me. Guns in a zombie apocalypse, except maybe when silenced, should not be used to kill zombies. Even silenced, they aren't silent. Since DayZ zombies seem to be attracted to noise, melee weapons are the way to go anyway, so, in essence, guns would be more for killing people.... So they shouldn't be as easy to get ahold to in this game unless it is advertised as a "FFA PVP game... oh yah witth Zombies"... You wanna kill me? Lets go toe to toe. nighhawk 41 Posted January 28, 2014 When I die, im usually re-geared completely in under 30 minutes. You need to learn how to play the game before you jump to conclusions about it.
Lidskjalf 132 Posted January 28, 2014 ps. And don't listen to whiners here who would tell you something about fair play (to not to log out and hop) or to be friendly and help each other, that's all a bullshit and this suckers use it to justify their dumbness (which they call "IMMERSION OF SURVIVAL"). To survive - means use any opportunity which this game offer to you. Good luck. I feel sorry for your brain.
pharoah 6 Posted January 28, 2014 Does punching a Zombie kill it? I tried but died from blood loss - this is after knocking it down 6 times or so. Surely I could thrust my shoe through the back of its skull whilst its on the ground (just like in the walking dead lol).

Knock him out and just run away, if he catches up because you're looting - rinse and repeat.
Bubbajones 238 Posted January 28, 2014 me thinks this bambie has been watching videos of the mod for arma 2, not the unfinished, a-work-in-progress alpha that you agree to test (every time you start the game might i add) as it is still being developed.... you should be more upset with yourself for buying into an alpha thinking it was anything else (even with the multiple warnings found throughout steam and the internet.) welcome to the alpha testers.

moparspanky 9 Posted January 28, 2014 Here's the trick. Literally eat and drink every single thing you can the instant you find it, unless your safety is at stake, then wail until it's safe then literally eat and drink everything. Your stomach can hold A LOT and once you are fed and liquidated you are good to go for hours bro.
Zeppa 562 Posted January 28, 2014 You fail...also ALPHA, clearly you dont understand what it is.Most of the server are restarting like every 4 or less hours, so anyone should be able to find their loot, if dont then you are doing it wrong.tip: Go inland.
King of kong 1117 Posted January 28, 2014 Yep. Go in-land. You won't find anything on the coast, especially if you're playing on high-population servers.
Nails 150 Posted January 28, 2014 Funny, I had quite the opposite reaction to the sparse loot and zombies. My reaction was: 'Wow, much more realistic to not be running over guns food and ammo at every step'. The game requires patience. I've literally had to traverse the ENTIRE map twice to get myself loaded out in an impressive manner. Now I'm full health, full stomach, full energy, lots of ammo, nice weapons, plenty of water and medical gear AND I know the map pretty well at this point. New player as well and this pretty much sums up my experience as well. I am using my time during the alpha to learn the geography and practice player interactions.
blacklabel79 949 Posted January 28, 2014 But this is the worst game i've ever played so far. I love the games concept, but finding items in this game is so freaking ridiculous. nice one...

Judopunch 523 Posted January 28, 2014 Hey, i just started playing this game. SERIOUSLY? Is it the servers im playing on or is this game so freaking dead? (Im sorry for raging). I didn't expect this game to actually be near IMPOSSIBLE to find FOOD. Realistically 2/3 houses should have some sort of food. And if its been looted then they should respawn by some time. Because after 5 hours i've found a FEW fruits. Weapons is out of the question. It takes HOURS/DAYS to find valuable items such as GUNS. Maps are even more ridiculous. Tbh, the alpha atm is UNPLAYABLE. Im sorry to say this, and i know im raging. But this is the worst game i've ever played so far. I love the games concept, but finding items in this game is so freaking ridiculous. THERES NOT EVEN MANY ZOMBIES?! Not to talk about the controlls. Equipping flashlight is slow and clumpy. Fighting is even more ridiculous and no mechanics is explained whatsoever. On streams people ride on cars, planes. They use guns all the time. They FORCE PEOPLE to lie down as they loot them. THOSE are the things that made me get interested in the game. Only to be entirely DISSAPOINTED when having to run for about 4 hours only to find utter SHIT (sorry for swearing). The gameplay at the moment is so poor that either im doing something wrong or this game is so unplayable. Please enlighten me what im doing wrong. HOW do i get FOOD, WEAPONS, backpacks? NO VILLAGES have any ITEMS. Whats the point in running from village to village when there is nothing there? Regards angry new player.I went to one server with 5 of my friends. We were all geared with food weapons, backpacks, and whatever else we could want. Its an alpha, but really its not that bad. Asking for help is better than complaining. Using the search button and reading for five minutes would have easily answered most of your questions.

deepfried 95 Posted January 28, 2014 There is plenty of loot if you know where to look and when; when being preferably after a server restart, or as close as your can get, and where being either places that people don't generally go or the high value areas like the air fields, military bases, and cities.Being a veteran of the mod and having about 50hrs in the SA game, I can get mostly kitted out in an evening. being a new player however you will have to take higher risk strategies like looting Cherno or Electro, and you will need to study the dayzdatabase map to learn the building type that spawn what you need, and where they are. This all said, the current state of Dayz is not representitive of the final product, you say you know its in alpha but do you really understand what they means? the game is at least a year away from beta and only has about 20% of the content in place and working in terms of mechanics beyond the basics. THere is also a lot of bug fixing and balancing still to be done, essentially the game is by definition not playable, that is basically what alpha means. However thats not to say you cant have fun with it, so long as you take it as you find it and dont have any expectations. As for the videos that got you excited for dayz, well most of them, certainly those featureing vehicles and aircraft, are from the mod which is fairly mature at this point, the standalone game which you are playing doesn't have most of that content yet. Also bear in mind these videos you are seeing are highlights, they show you a few minutes of play from several hours or days of actual playing, truth is Dayz isn't about constant action, if thats what you're after then you will spend most of your time running naked to Balota, Cherno, or Electro and either getting shot or shooting people... this isn't a particularly fullfilling way to play the game and you will get bored of it quickly. there is a huge map to explore and learn to survive in, learn navigation and orientering skills, learn tactics and learn the thrill of looting a high risk area knowing that the character you've invested dozens of game hours in can die in an instant from and unseen sniper or a run in with another surviver. Final tip: its much better to play with others, playing alone will get you so far but past the first 40-50 hours of gameplay you will need to group up.
