less militarised more improvised

Recommended Posts

So it seems the overarching goal of the game is to remove military grade weapons and use more improvised weapons like bow's and spears.. tbh I really dunno how I feel about that. How do you feel it will effect the game? Lots of the high end weaponry that was in the mod is gone now & tbh I liked when it was in the game, but, if even ar's & rifle's are going to go as well, I probably will too. I couldn't be arsed running round like a bunch of angry farmers with shotguns or Neanderthals with spears  and bow's..

would everyone in the apocalypse be running around with m4's, army helmets, tactical vests, gasmasks and military pistols?

They're not going to completely remove the weapons and it sounds like early gameplay will definitely focus more on improvised weapons, which will actually be nice when zeds start respawning on the coast.

I love the way its heading. The impovised backpack is awesome. Gives a way more apocalypse feel to it. I can live with mill gear beign even more rarer than it is right now. Tho id like to find more orange raincoats. Our new founded church demands them as basic item.

Fair point, but it's not the zombie apocalypse, they are not the undead there is a nondiscript virus at play, + it's a game, I suppose I like to think of it as being shortly after the out break, not the point where civilisation is destroyed back beyond the darkages with people reduced to fighting with bow's & spears is all i'm saying..

To be honest its sounds good but i definitely DO NOT want it to become overpowering and to be the primary focus.

Problem is that our apocalypse started around May 2012. Military loot is long gone.

I personally belive that the optimal point comes when there are lots of weapon types in the game, from the rare military rifle that is not in pristine condition without a coveted cleaning kit, to the hunting rifle with a decent scope, to bows and improvised spears. (Kitchen knife, rope and a stick anyone? Range = safer zombie killing)

Then, you make the weapons you simply pick up decently rare. So a weapon is an amazing find, while ammo might be just as difficult. Currently, ammo is being treated like candy.

Yes I'm sure all the soldiers would just put down their guns at the airfield and then try to evac, besides the point I think that you feel this is designed as a shooter when it's more of a survival game, give me a knife and 25 mins in the woods and I'll have my spear, add a piece of string or rope and I'll make it a throwing spear.  Sure not the greatest weapons but something is better then nothing.

by bows I don't think they mean like finding a really good piece of wood, making a rough bow shape out of it for an hour, then stringing it, I think they mean bow as in like compound bows, crossbows, and low grade pistols, I personally would like to see people running around with kind of low things, and some mid-range weapons, like shotguns, hunting rifles pistols , now I know its a game, but use a little bit of reasonable thinking, say we're a month into the apocalypse, what are people running around with? improvised to mid range weapons, like a machete or a hatchet, guns , again like hunting rifles, arrow/bolt weapons like the compound bow, or the crossbow. 1/100 people id like to say would have military grade weapons, unless there's some sort of organization going on, like a woodbery situation, where there's a government, led by some guy, who's been basically collecting weapons since the start. otherwise people are running with pistols straight from their home, or a hatchet they had in their tool shed.

I was a little bit repetitive sorry :P

well I suppose the question is the remaniants of how large a military remains? we assume they have been overrun by the virus, how much of that weaponry would pass into the remaining populations hands?

I'll be glad to never see all the high-end weapons Even the mosins are a bit much with people doing nothing more than staking out loot spawn points and shooting whoever shows up just for the halibut. It would be nice if 95% of the weapons were short range that would allow you to stand across the square from another player and check out their intentions without getting blown away.

With factories closed and the population gone how long would the supply of ammo last?

I would like to see guns spawn in pieces spread all over.Let people put them together from pieces, force them to trade with each other to get a working example. Make the bigger, more powerful guns even scarcer or perhaps just the ammo for them. This would make people conserve their bullets. The more rare the items the more people must interact to get the pieces they need. So you have a mosin... but if you only have 6 bullits for it are you going to waste them killing new-spawners on the beach?

You say that but the story line is about as close as you will get to the game. How about having players be infected. If you loot them you may get sick and die or at least be very impaired for a while.

It looks like Rocket want to simulate the natural progression of technology after a catastrophic failure in society.

First, people will start with high-technology, because it is still in relatively good shape and people can still find parts to maintain what they have.

Second, people will start running out of resource to maintain their technology as the corporate infrastructure that produced the parts on the scale necessary for society no longer exists, and the transportation networks are no longer being maintained. This means that technology will become rare, and it will be difficult to take care of. In this period, we would see a lot of tech being lost, and a lot of older much more basic items being used (bows, blades, etc...)

Third, there will a resurgence in basic mechanical technologies as people learn how to make things (e.g. how to use basic tools to make complex items), and certain pieces of technology will begin to come back (basic homemade guns, radios, etc...).

This is one reason that I would like to see Rocket take Dayz into a Metro 2033 direction in terms of resources, technology, and crafting.

More zombies could mean silenced weapons > firearms in some scenarios if balanced properly.

For instance, a guy with an M4 and a guy with a bow trade shots on a hardcore server. Both take cover and bandage but there are 2-3 zombies heading straight for the M4 guy. The guy with a bow (getting help from the zeds now) can find an opportunity to take more shots, or charge, while his opponent is distracted. He can run off and live another day. Either way, he quickly gets the advantage.

Also, could be simply harder to locate people based on sounds of their weapons if you don't have visual contact.
