How to end kill on sight?

Recommended Posts

Did anyone consider that the threat of being KOS'd is the only thing that makes this game intense and tactical???

I love that nervous moment where you risk exposure.  Honestly, it is why I play DayZ, the interaction.  I can mow people down all day on a dozen other games, with DayZ, you get to survive AND meet people who MAY not decide to empty a magazine at you!

Me and my buddy were just talking about this... play all day in run-n-gun type games killing endless other players and it's just another day and I don't really talk about it all that much with my bro's, but the one intense interaction like I had described earlier and my entire group will be talking about it all weekend. If there weren't gun toting maniacs in the game, It would ruin half of what surviving in this survival game means to me.

If you limit ammo spawns, then you would be more likely to find ammo on other players than in the environment. Please follow this thought to its logical conclusion.

When there is a lot more content and the "endgame" bar has been raised significantly and everyone is trying to just survive/learn it then there might be less Kos, as soon as people become comfortable at being able to survive then the Kos will return. the key is make it so hard to survive or so much to do that only a few become bored and Kos everything. Base building, skill system, fleshed out medical system more diseases etc, maybe some Gassed area where u need certain gear hazmat suit or something with super hard zombies that requires a team to survive up there with a reward along the lines of heli crash sights to provide incentives.

Wether scarce ammo has an effect on kos really does not matter to me.

I would love to see ammo rare enough that when I turn a corner and find myself staring down the barell of a gun i can actually have a reasonable expectation (say 20 - 35%) that the gun is not loaded. Or will misfire.

Large majority of the players I run into are friendly, or at least don't commit an aggressive action against me before we split ways. Want to help fight (bad pun is bad) KoS? Don't shoot people on sight. Having said that we need bandits as much as we need players in general or you lose that adrenaline feel when you think someone is close.

It seems to me that the dev team are working toward a situation where living survivors are more valuable than dead ones.

  • Blood management
  • Damaged victim inventory
  • (intended) Greater numbers and types of zombies
  • Inability to (simply) carry various forms of weaponry (snipe or spray?)

This leads me to believe that we'll soon find ourselves regarding each other as resources to be valued and respected as much as can openers  ;)

I chose to buy this game (simulator) because of the threat of loosing all my work in a single shot from behind a wall 100s of meters away, but hope and act to avoid it happening.

I don't know of another game that provides the same or similar level of adrenalin fueled tension when after trekking through a tree line and finding that I have to sprint across open ground to the next cover, I know it could all be over if I screw up that vault, or misjudge the gap between those shrubs (damn shrubs  >:( running on the spot for a few seconds like a plum is not helpful!)

I wouldn't want to tame the game and lose that important difference between DayZ and lesser alternatives.

However, I am looking forward to later releases that encourage teamwork and random moments of mutual benefit derived from sparing bullets and instead trading wisdom (and beans).

Incidentally (all that said): if you meet me (Fred Gandt) in game - I'll avoid killing you just as much as I'll avoid being killed. And if you're carrying a Mosin, I'm fairly sure you aren't carrying it as defense against zombies  ;)

In summary: no matter what the devs do (except disallow survivors shooting each other :( ), there'll always be those that shoot on sight, perhaps just for jollies, or perhaps as a genuine tactic (easy to survive if no one else does!), but as the game becomes more complex, I can easily imagine many situations where a buddy (temporary or otherwise) would be worth much more than the contents of his backpack.

Everyone who tries to survive this game gets my  :beans:  :D

You  must not be running into the scum campers i am than. Called out to a guy in a watch tower to see if anyone was there get shot without even any interaction.

You can end KOS by making zombies a much greater threat.  So much so, that cooperation is encouraged, or at some times, necessary for survival

the game needs to give people value (other than blood donors)

I think skills, if properly implemented will make positive interaction more comon.

lets think beyond the game about what gives people value.. i think this is an actually-interesting question the game manages to raise.. amongst some others.

there are actually some obvious advantages to keeping people around, though there is always a perfectly natural distrust/fear of them. the truth of it, regardless of what people may say on here, lonewolfing is at a clear disadvantage to having a group, if only because the surprise head-shot from behind may come to someone else before it does to yourself.firing at every player you see may bring with it the rather undesired prospect of attracting the attention of a group.

the only viable way of implementing skills involves complex game mechanics to do for other things what aim is to shooting. abstracted ways of applying real-life knowledge of things like medicine or botany or other things into the game combined with a staina system that makes a survivor attempting to pack all of the possible kit they may need solo. larger amount of items and fewer chance of a specific one spawning can very well foster trade.. etc

it has been already said that he currently-low zombie counts are a matter of technical stability as opposed to a design decision. another thing that would make the game very different is attempting to play on a single server without jumping, as will soon be the case with private hive support. you'd be amazed how differently the game plays once you no longer have availability of limitless ammo, weapon spawns and gear in general.

Zombies, lot of zombies everywhere so they are an actual threat. Then people will think twice before shooting because firing a gun means in 15 seconds you are gonna have 30 zombies on your ass from all directions.

My personal plan to end the spread of KoS, is to NEVER give in to being that type of player no matter how many times I get killed, I will always seek interaction with fellow survivors, and one day, maybe not get shot/punched/chopped to death, lol...

I just died in zelenigorsk. My buddy and I ran into two people out in the open behind the grocery store. We shot first because he had no cover to get to. It was instinct and unfortunate. Under gun fire, I managed to get into the back room where one of them and myself gunned each other. I bleed him bad but miscommunication led me to assume he went out the back door and I stepped out into his sights.

My buddy killed them and I got my gun back when I re spawned and I met four really nice clan guys in solytchniya. They gave me a spite, a compass, and a full canteen. I legged it back to zelgnigorsk.

I brought the exchange on myself by kos, though I think it was the safe thing to do. I rarely shoot first, but two geared guys coming rom bolata are not to be ignored. We had nowhere to go.

Pshhhhh... I know plenty of "Heroes" in the game who never complain...

Gotta learn to live with KoS mate. This shit isn't: Fisher Price My First Survival Simulator.

I dont mind pwning people by the masses lol. Just saying it would make me think twice about doing so lol

Won't work.  With 90% of the community KOSing everyone they see.............you'll just get axed to death instead of shot.

The only thing that would work is something that visually identifies good vs bad.  See my signature thread below.

Yep, pretty much sums it up.

Hero = bullet sponge

Welcome to Standalone...........or just another KOS extension of the mod.  Different game mechanics, still everyone kills everyone the instant they see them.

If you have 5 bullets and I have 5 bullets I'm going to spend 1 of my bullets and then I'll have 9.

Neat, huh?

Next  brilliant idea?

How would that make any difference? 90% of the people would be bad according to you, so everyone would still look the same and still shoot everyone else. Nothing would change except player appearance.

I would like to see no pvp servers where guns do no damage to other players, I'm sick of spending 2 hours looting just to get shot by some prick who wants my gun...

I mean if people want to limit KoS, maybe make a few servers where when you die you get to keep your weapon and lose everything else? Well something like that...

You can limit the available resources to ONE bullet per server.

If I find it, I'm going to put it between the eyes of the first fresh spawn I see.  Just to spite the "Fix KoS!" folks.

You want to "fix" KoS?  Log out.

There ain't no fixin' that which ain't broke.

Absolutely  ,

Something still needs to be done. The value of life is nowhere near where it should be. Items have value but life itself doesn't which is totally flawed. But don't forget that even if something is done and even if that something is very effective.. we'll still KOS. Because that's still a PC game and we are PKs.

Oh and limiting the resources isn't going to affect KOS. I do agree that military and other automatic weapons should be seriously limited and very rare (their ammo too of course). But that only means that victims will have less resources to protect themselves. If I have 5 bullets then that average Joe may have same or even less. I'll kill him and will get some more from his corpse.

Limiting ammo will make shooting someone more desirable if they have a gun because you will assume they have ammo. NOTHING WILL CHANGE KOS. People who KOS love it and likely will never change their mind. No amount of rules will ever change that. No amount of videos of role played gameplay will convince them.

Asking to end KOS is like asking to stop war. It's pointless. It will never happen. People are too complicated and the reasons for violence too many.

Can you do your part in stopping KOS? Yea. Don't KOS. Be prepared to pay for your decision, but maybe if you have enough conversations with people you might at least help stop KOS on the coast...
