I literally can't even join servers: I get the message "bad version" and then restart connection or some bologna.

Any tips on how to get this clunky game working?

Be sure you have updated (Try verifying Game Cache) to the correct version 557 and are joining a server of the same version.

Zarni, how do you find out what server version the servers are running?  I updated, and I can get into most servers, but a few of the servers went a little whacky and I get strange marning boxes that they couldn't load certain items.

Zarni, how do you find out what server version the servers are running?  I updated, and I can get into most servers, but a few of the servers went a little whacky and I get strange marning boxes that they couldn't load certain items.

 

It says it next to server time and Mode. If you cannot see these in the server list you have not updated to the latest version. ;)

Don't get upset if patches don't work all the time, that's the point; they're supposed to break now so the devs can fix them and have a stable release version! :D Like they said, verify your cache, make sure auto updates and all that are on, and restart Steam.
