Should we be able to carry two rifles?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, so I was wondering what your opinions were on this one?

I understand that having two long guns, a Mosin and either an M4 or a shotgun, might be considered OP by some, and potentially dilute the great rock-paper-scissors form of combat that comes from a limited selection and carrying capacity of weapons. Having to choose which weapon to carry and therefore what range you wish to excel at encourages both tactical play, flanking, and teamwork.

On the other hand, the whole 'pitch' for the game is it's your story. Shouldn't you be able to sling two firearms on your back if you want to? I mean, it would be realistic; it makes little sense that your character could carry a rifle and a fire axe, but be unable to place a rifle in the same spot on his back in lieu of the axe. This would also promote teamwork, as you could now (conveniently, as carrying a weapon in your hands across great distances is annoying) carry a weapon for yourself, as well as for a recently deceased teammate. The way it works currently is someone in your group dies, and proceeds to server hop (which is bullcrap, btw) until they get the weapon they want. If you could carry a backup weapon, your fresh-spawn mate could just rendezvous with you and receive said rifle from you.

Also, bear in mind that it would still be quite balanced, more than it would first appear; you give up a great deal when you forgo a melee weapon. Having an axe enables you to (relatively) stealthily kill zombies, without ringing the dinner-bell for all other zombies in a 3 block radius. And, given the (currently excessive) PvP nature of the game, you are inviting a chest full of lead when you fire a gun in a city. It is a tremendous trade-off to make, and you really gimp yourself when it comes to general looting and survival, for the advantage afforded you in direct combat.

Personally, I would still roll with a Mosin and a fire axe, I just believe it would be nice to have the option. Perhaps they could at least attempt to introduce it in this Alpha and see the community's reception to it?

Please leave any feedback and opinions, thanks!

Yes, you can easily carry 2 rifles although it would be heavy and conflicting with movement. If it was how I just described it then YES!

No.

Or if:

Right now, without any weight or other effects of carrying tons of gear it would feel like playing Quake and not survival game.

in terms of realism, yes you should be able to. If I can carry a fire ax and an M4, I should be able to carry a mosin and an m4

this will be even more true when they add smaller rifles, like the SKS

however, I like the tradeoff currently required. I like that snipers are less effective at close range, and players with M4 are unable to do much at long range

If you want a second primary for your friend who just died, carry it in your hands. Simplez.

Or, if they enable us to carry 2 primary weapons AND an axe, we should run VERY noticably slower than someone only carrying 1.

I will personally down vote every post that makes this game "easier".

Can you also sprint with those throught 10 kilometers like you can in game even after being shot and bandaging shot wound with some rags? There go your "realism" in video game.

@Creature  That make the game easier? It would actually make it harder with those tradeoffs that I mentioned if they were to be implemented. Although if there weren't then yea I can see where your getting at.

Maybe. It needs a balancing factor.

One would be introducing weight and encumbrance. Either this would cause subtle changes to your running/sprinting speed and/or cause fatigue and heavy breathing and weapon sway faster. This would make carrying gear a trade off between being a slow pack mule or a light weight fast mover.

Also, I don't know about stuffing an M4 in your backpack, but I hope that they make the M4 receiver a component, so you could disassemble an M4 and put it in your bag, but you would need a bit of time to put it all together if you wanted to use it. I also think your backpack contents in game should be automatically minimized, and expanding it causes you to unshoulder the bag to access the contents. If this was implemented I would have no problem with it.

Hopefully these features are added. It shouldn't be a matter of just hitting the other weapon in the hot-bar and switching play styles on the fly.

It's called gun slings. xD No need for putting it in your backpack. :P

As above commenters have suggested, I would LOVE to see a weight/encumbrance system implemented! I've been thinking about that the whole time I've been playing the game. Maybe I'm just out of shape IRL, but it seems a touch unrealistic that you can sprint indefinitely, even buck-naked. But while carrying 50+ pounds of gear? LOL.

I think the ability to carry two rifles/rifle+shotgun would be very reasonable, especially if it were balanced via increased encumbrance.

@noblue Just because YOUR fit IRL doesn't mean jack shit in the game. This ain't some SAO stuff. Also, just because your fit doesn't mean you can run at Kenyan speed with gunshot wounds and 45-65 pounds of gear on.

the argument that "X feature in dayz is unrealistic, so nothing has to be realistic" is stupid

I was disappointed to find that my player can carry a fire axe AND a long gun at the same time. I think gameplay would be better served by making players choose to give up a sling carried melee weapon for a sling carried rifle. I think it could make things more interesting when the most powerful players have to sound off every time they want to kill something.

As someone suggested the M4 could be disassembled and packed away in backpack

No Really, one Rifle is enough, so you need to choose carefully wich gun you carry. Guns are really heavy and not exactly easy to carry. one should be enough.

Actualy you can carry even more then three in real life, but they weight a few kgs so it's not so easy to move with them

Can anyone confirm?

If you can though, I still wouldn't. I need my backpack for ammo, rice, canteens and medical supplies.

Would fit easily if the receiver is taken off the trigger unit. Assembly should take a bit of time but can be done really fast if you keep the pins open. Just slot the top on, slam the pins and load it up.

Yes, you should be able to, but only if it has realistic drawbacks. Same goes for fire axes etc.

You can have both but it is cumbersome. I will sometimes carry a Mosin and fireaxe on my back and M4 in my hands. M4 for closer combat while looting in towns and military buildings. If I need to snipe someone I drop the M4 and bring out the Mosin. However you can and will lose your M4 this way, particularly if you are on a 2nd or higher floor or roof. It is also harder to manage your inventory as you have to drop the M4 to eat drink bandage blood bag anything that requires your hands so you are rolling the dice if it will respawn on the ground or not.
