Need help UPGRADING my computer hardware

Recommended Posts

Okay guys, so I've been looking into upgrading my computer hardware to finally play arma 2 OA (dayz) at more than 20 fps on low settings. Now I'm curious what exactly should I enhance, given that some people say Arma 2 OA is a CPU heavy game. I will list my specs down below, but at the moment, I have a semi decent processor, and a shitty graphics card, so I'm not sure why I would upgrade my CPU when it is decent already. Anyways I just want any expert advice on which one I should be upgrading.

Specs

CPU - AMD FX-6120 Six-Core Processor --- Speed - 3.50 GHz (unclocked)

RAM - 10 GB (plenty there)

GPU - AMD Radeon HD 7450 (That's right... Terrible)

Power Supply - 300 Watts (Don't worry I am already upgrading this to at least a 500 watt)

I think that's all that is necessary correct?

Average FPS

Open Fields - 25

Towns - ~18

Forests - 13 (trees are the bane of my computer for some reason)

So what is my problem? Should I really be upgrading my GPU or CPU?

Thanks fellow survivors, bandits, and blessed heros!

P.S. Here's some beans for the road.

Try getting a 6670 hd instead, not sure if those are better. But i get around the same fps but forests are still 18 fps for me. Confused why you have a six core, i believe they are overpriced because the extra 2 cores (4 cores being used) are almost useless. But graphic card upgrades are the way to go for now.

Actually Im not happy with AMD products, and I've been looking into getting a GTX 660, or GTX 650 Ti Boost. Possibly even higher, thats why I need a better power supply.

I have a gtx660 with an old i7 950 I get 30 fps in cherno and electro and get 60 in small towns and other less populated areas. If your going the gtx660 route get the 760 instead. Your cpu is fine just over clock a little to 4.0 ghz or 4.5 ghz that cpu can do 4.5 with relative ease. Also go up to a 600 or 700 watt power supply(quality one) like corsair or thermaltake.  I have a 1k thermaltake I bought 4 years ago still going strong. Way over kill but I haven't had to replace it either and it was on sale at the time. 600 or 700 will give you headroom for future upgrades and overclocking if you desire to overclock.

Thanks, I'll look into that. as far as $$$ goes, is the jump from the 660 to 760 very much?

I picked up a GTX760 to replace my aging ATI card, and I'm quite happy with it.

I also picked up a gtx760 about 2 months ago and have been very pleased with it.  Shadowplay is definitely a huge plus.

FX6350 4.2Ghz

R9 280x 3gb

Frames medium settings:

Forests ~70

Towns ~40

New areas ~25

You can Overclock your FX to 4.1Mhz I think..

Just get a better GPU(r9 280x or gtx 770). And I suggest getting SSD and a good 600-700 watt PSU
