What The Hell Is With The Slowdown Period For Zombies?

Recommended Posts

Every time I've been chased by zombies they run for a few seconds then start power walking at me. This is an extremely annoying feature, I feel Dean has given up on us and bended the knee to the Romero fans. It takes away allot of the anger when the infected spend half the chase chicken-walking after you. I was hoping for proper fast and furious MOFUCKING RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE zombies in the Standalone.

Am hoping for very fast zombies too. I think as long as their hearing is not better than a real humans, then sneaking around them will be fun and rewarding. The ONLY way to make zombies something to be feared... is to make them into something to be feared...

Well the romero zombies are the only real zombie.

The idiotic olympic sprinting zombies of the mod were terrible.

Actually, if you saw ALL of the Romero zombie movies, you will see he has sprinting zombies as well. When Zack Snyder redid The Dawn of the Dead in 2004, Romero was impressed with the sprinting zombies.

However, if you jog from zombies in the standalone, after about 2-3 minutes, they lose interest and stop chasing you.

I think there should be room for both types of zombies... I think it would add even more of an element of surprise and randomness to not know if a distant zombie is a "walker" or a "runner" ... I think the only successful way of doing slow zombies is to increase the numbers greatly, that way there is still a threat... but with the sprinting zombies the numbers dont have to be as high because they are more agile... Personally I am much more of a fan of Large groups of slow zombies... but for DayZ that just doesnt quite fit the environment of small soviet towns...

but all this doesnt matter until they fix the clipping and the Zombie AI... Its much harder to sneak past zombies when they can spot you crouched from across an entire town, then proceed to ghost through every building to beat the shit out of you as your paper skin tears off at the slightest touch of each zombie punch...

being a zombie buff since i was a single sperm i agree. The "zombies" in the game are not zombies but infected same as in 28 day later also not zombies simply zombies are dead, infected ("rage zombies") are not, thus not zombies

Here's the definition from the dictionary

Zombie.
"the body of a dead person given the semblance of life, but mute and will-less, by a supernaturalforce, usually for some evil purpose."

but all that said the "zombies" are being redone and they've said countless times the whole zombie AI is being reworked so i'm sure we will see many changes over the course of the alpha / beta

I also don't get why they sprint at you, then suddenly start walking.

I suppose the only valid reason would be so people don't rage when a zombie sprints through several walls while the team is still fixing the collision and pathfinding.

Common usage. These are living infected humans, commonly known as zombies. I am ready to verbally destroy anyone who argues otherwise.

On topic; it is odd, but perhaps the zombies have stamina?

...and normal people don't.

I think we'll just have to wait and see how they act when zombie physics and behavior has been added in.

Fatigue ?

Perhaps the zombies have a stamina system in place with them.

Hope they do.

zombies should never be a threat in low numbers or when they get a single target, they should be a threat when part of a hoard and when you are boxed in inside a building or a barricaded section of a town.

Nah, every single one should be a threat. After all they're humans that are infected by a rage virus. What about that doesn't sound dangerous?

Whats wrong with the Remero design? If it were not for THAT design than you would never see your precious 28 days latter retarded sprinting zombies. In fact the Remero design maye have been slow but the fact that one could literally rip you apart was no joke.

In typical zombie lore zombies are never the real threat.

They are like a constant pressure a presence that reveals the true monstrosity of human nature.

They are only a threat in large numbers but their mere existence is what leads to people , humans to do horrible things.

Slowing down the zombies, adding more of them, and then adding barricade, and fortifications would be better imo.

For gameplay reasons, fast zombies are always going to be much better. Whether they're "real zombies" or infected humans doesn't really matter. I doubt Rocket cares either as long as they fit the game.

Which of his films are you referring?

Was it Diary or Survival?

I can't remember sprinting Z's in those, but they're incredibly forgettable films so it may be I was too busy watching the timer count up to the end of the films to notice. Night, Dawn, Day and Land all shamble with the occasional 'lurch'

DayZ needs running Z's, but not sprinting one's - unless the AI is improved so that they can be realistically lost using cover.

Also the ability of players to sprint at top speed should be time or distance limited with a respite before starting again.

If that were the actual lore of DayZ fine, but they're humans with a rage like virus. So it doesn't make sense.

In 28 Days Later the infected do get tired after a little bit of sprinting.  During the tunnel scene you can even see them slow and give up the chase as the car speeds away.

Obviously the zombies in DayZ are not in a finished state and need some work, but I think they're mostly okay the way they are as far as speed is concerned.  They will be a lot more threatening when there's more of them around.

Rather than making the zombies never get tired, they should probably make the player get tired too.

I see them as Zombies but I really can't be bothered getting into that discussion again. For the topic, has it ever occurred to people that they may be slowed down so they don't zip around like these 'rage infected humans'?.

I don't think zombie speed is the issue.

Currently we are seeing two things taking away from the threat of zombies:

1. Unlimited stamina.  We can run forever.  A running human should be faster than a zombie.  The Mod's twitch zombies looked silly, and weren't faster than a human.  But making it so you can only sprint for a limited time will increase the threat by itself.

2.  We have only a fraction of the zombies seen in the mod on any given area.  This is probably good though since currently zombies can freely wander through walls, rise up through floors, or cruise around like some sort of crazy zombie landshark with half of their body beneath the ground.  The clipping issues make massive zombie hordes an impossible to deal with issue in most cities and towns.  You wouldn't want to go in a building because they would clip through and kill you.

Why all the hate for fast zombies? If they aren't zombies then i refuse to believe that George A. Romero's zombies are actual zombies. If nything the Romero ones are more retarded as they lack any form of intelligence and are basically old people with the mind of baby. Romero zombies are a manifestation of the Voodoo Zombie itself. Romero zombies are basically what got the zombie phenomenon noticed in Western Culture, I don't see why 28 Days Later "Infected" aren't a manifestation of the zombie too. They eat people, and they're crazy, and sick as hell. Only difference is that they're alive and jog like an angry pregnant woman.

DayZ has the alive and relatively quick zombies, that's the way it will be for quite awhile. Unless Dean decides to bend the knee to retarded zombies. I'm fine with the fast ones getting tired after running but that should only be after their prey gets a good distance away. They need to run as fast as players. That would create a real fear factor. You know that these crazed people are as fast as you, and ten times more dangerous. I'm not saying turn them into Usaine Bolt. But at least make them pose a threat. Id love to see some fast shamblers in the mix too. But these would be the starving ones in the northern areas that only a few people die in.

In reality, slow retarded zombies wouldn't be enough to overrun the Chernarussian Army. Fast ones similar to the Rage Virus zombies would, however, stand a very good chance of toppling a nation considsering how smart and dangerous they are.

Slow mind-of-a-baby zombies are somewhat some threat in close urban environments, but in a big rura area like SE Chernarus they're no threat at all because there's nothing that allows them to catch up with the humans unless they trip while in a city.
