a way to reduce KOS, combat logging, ghosting, & server hopping!

the other day, my friends and i cornered a player and were about to have a little fun with him until he suddenly logged out and disappeared which was very annoying because we would have immediately killed him and looted his gear if we had known.

 

i believe there should be some kind of obvious visual clue that a player displays to alert others nearby of when they are logging out:

     log out animation: character lays down into a sleeping position

     log out timer: 20 seconds

     log out abilities: can see surroundings, can cancel log out (see log in animation/timer)

     log out effects: vulnerable until timer expires and logs, cannot move or perform actions

 

in tandem, there should also be a log in animation and timer:

     log in animation: character enters server in a sleeping position and wakes up

     log in timer: 10 seconds

     log in abilities: can see surroundings

     log in effects: vulnerable and cannot move or perform actions until timer expires

 

this would be beneficial in many ways:

     - adds realism

     - reduces KOS: players can track and disable others without fear of being logged away from

     - reduces combat logging: loggers will be vulnerable to their combatants during the log out timer

     - reduces ghosting: (1) ghosts will be vulnerable to their would-be victims during the log in timer

               (2) will take longer to jump to empty server and then back, giving more time for others to move away

     - reduces server hopping: (1) makes it take longer to hop between servers

               (2) hoppers will log out away from locations where zombies spawn, primarily around loot

 

please note that the length of the timers are up to discussion and balancing.

 

EDIT: to reflect leftcrusade's comments. if a player cancels their log out, they automatically begin the log in cycle

Seriously - Every 2nd thread is about ideas for this, and 99% of the ideas are all the same, the other 1% don't even make sense. Please just stop that, I guess the whole team knows about those problems.

On the first sight, I really liked the idea, but...

 

It can be used as a trap too.

Imagine.

You are in the tower on the firestation, your opponent is on the roof.

The only thing you have to do is abort, the log out timer will begin, you will lie down to go to sleep. Your oponent knows this too. He'll come in the tower, thinking you are sleeping. But, you cancel the log out timer, stand up while your predator is coming to you. Because he expects you to sleep, you have a huge advantage on him.

BOOM

Your enemy is dead.

 

I like your idea but it can be easily used as a bandit tactic.

 

Not being able to cancel your logout timer is no option. For you may be safe when you go to sleep, but what if you just started your logout timer and a zombie comes walking around the corner and starts to eat you?

 

I'm sorry, I like your idea, but it will only create more nasty exploits.

Please, just look at the suggestion forum and read a bit through the posts, acid574 is saying the truth... It's ridiculous how many people use the search function before posting their own idea which was posted 1000 times ago.
Also, they already had an acceptable system in the mod and it is very sure that they're going to make an equivalent in the SA, too....

I got into a firefight earlier in Berezino, armed with only an axe, motorbike helmet and clothes I spawned in with.. I survived the flurry of bullets coming my way and managed to lose the line of sight of these would be murderers. I darted straight into a two story building and promptly guarded the stairs just incase they did see me and followed me up there.

 

So I'm just there waiting to crack a skull.. when my actual front door bell rang, I was home alone at the time so I had to answer it. Naturally I logged out and went to answer the door. I was only a few minutes at most and promptly logged back in, unfortunately just as the screen came up with color I saw two guys right next to me, got insta killed and started being called a combat logging little fucker.

 

Now, the moral of this story is this.. I know that DayZ is a video game and real life comes first, hence the answering of the real life door in my real life house. I didn't combat log, I never have, I will die proudly 99.9% of the time in knowing that I'm a better person for not just aimlessly shooting on sight. So whoever you guys were earlier...

I'm not flaming, I'm just answering his posts. And you're the one who's provoking the flaming right now. Never said that it annoys the mods, I just said that they already know this problem for sure. I didn't start a fight, I just told him that his ideas are well known and nothing new here, and they're also in the wrong section. Acid, the fact that you keep on responding about people saying you're flaming just means you're adding fuel to the flame. If you stop, the flame dies out and the topic can resume... just stop replying unless it relates to the original post.

 

...moving on, I like the idea, but the sleeping portion I somewhat disagree with. Not because its a bad idea, just because it means that when you log in you're vulnerable. I know that its a problem at times, but given that you make reloading noises and are not in control until you can actually see (which does last a bit) is enough as is. Not to mention you log in with no weapon in hand. True having to get up means someone trying to use ghosting or whatever will have a harder time of doing it, but there have been plenty of times that I have died just because I logged into a server and couldn't defend myself. It wasn't because I had combat logged or just chose a bad place to log out at, I had connection issues and was forced out on that spot. There have also been similar occasions where I had just enough time to defend myself. The point is, the current log-in process is fine. Its just the logout one that needs attention.
