I think I am missing a key mechanic or understanding in the game. I was on a server with 2 people (I made 3) and hiked it out to a remote town. Scouted about 5 mins with no activity and proceeded to a construction site. Packed away my weapon once I got to the second floor and started looting. When I hit the top of the site a guy was at the top waiting for me and gunned me down the second I entered the doorway.

 

So I think I am missing some key understanding how servers work or how to find people. It seems unlikely on such a huge map that 2 of the 3 people logged in were in the same exact spot. Seems unlikely he was just sitting up there waiting for someone, since this town didnt have much going for it and a low population would typically make that a waste of time. I would have heard/seen him in the building if he followed me or just happened to be wandering the same location.

 

The server was not vet (which I now know I want to play on, I misunderstood the tag).

 

Any ideas on what happened and how I can avoid this in the future?

 

Not QQ just trying to get better...luckily it was only a few hours on that char lost.

Coincidence I suppose. When the server loads you see the green names on the right of all the people in it. That's the actual number of people, the number in the server list is often wrong.

well it sounds like you were in cherno, which is a very active player area. you may have just been extremely unlucky, and you may have been attracting zombies, which would alert that player that you were on your way.

 

either that or he was a hacker and needs a red hot poker inserted into all cavities

It's rare but absolutly possible that you meet another player on a very low populated server, even in not very high traffic area.

what happened to you could make sens if this guy was hunting you and following you for a moment

 

There are lot's of zero angle in the construction site, the guy could go to last floor while you was looting the building, and was waiting for you to climb to last floor, or to have a good sniping position if you left the building without going to last floor.

 

Also possible that is ghosted you, or used a hack to locate players...

Could just be poor timing on your part. He may have been looting and seen you coming as the construction site is quite a good vantage point. 

 

I once ran into a guy on a server with only him and myself on it. Unfortunately he scared the shit out of me and I panic shot him, same could have happened to you

Hard to call.

When I played the mod, once we were only 4 players on the server. My friend and two other random players. In a forest North of Gorka, far away from any interest point, my friend and I ran straight in to the two other players. None of us saw each other until, we were face to face. None of us fire a shot, after 30 seconds, we just went each our separate way.

Could have been a freakish random event, don't know enough about hacking, to call it one way or another.

I forgot to mention I filter servers with battleye required, so its unlikely a hack unless battleye doesnt really stop it from happening?

 

It wasnt cherno, I was at an inland town a long way from there :)

There's a construction site in Berezino, one east of Polana and then a few far, far North West on the map.

Construction sites is also a good place to find large mountain backpacks and Polana/Berezino is traveled by many lone wolf survivors, who prefer to stay clear of more populated areas of the map.

he could have been spying on you from cover using 3'rd person, hopped in from a different server, or the power of odds were not on your side. I've had similar experiences, and though the probability is quite low, people still win the lottery sometimes...Why not the only other person on the server be in the same house as you? :D

I was bummin around Novy Lug with two other players on the server. Don't remember why, or when....but after about two minutes scoping it out with my DMR,..sure enough they see eachother and attempt to gun the other down. I laughed, called em asses over side, and went into the hills.

So i might tell you my story, which was a bit wierder than yours.

 

I played DayZ Mod for a long time. I joined a server with i think about 5 players.

My playername was Vincent, like in reallife and i did not check the other players names

I spawned near Komarovo and made my way to the industrial spawn at the shore and opened up the doors of the smaller industrial loot, the "Hall" with two entrances and little bureau in the second "floor"... i got in and closed the door, before i turned around. The other door opened up and a bambi, looking like me, came in -- silence... i looked at his nameplate.. "Vincent".

 

I first thought it's some kind of bug, where your own character is follwing you, but of course he took a different path and came in from the other side.

 

So to make it short, i joined a low populated server with a player called "Vincent" on it (i was Vincent(2)), both looking the same, and we both went into the same house at nearly the exact moment without knowing it... this is coincidence^^

I spawned in a small town the other day after a server restart, which spawned me in the middle of the street so didn't want to take chances logging into a full server and get killed because I was forced to log in out in the open

1 other player on the server, I spawn in and he's there beating me with a baseball bat, luckily I managed to knock him out with a wrench and killed him

Funny that, seems to happen on servers with the less amount of players. I was playing SA and it only had 8 players in the server and I was getting in to a small town and the first building a entered had 3 other players in said looting for lot. And I was well off the coast to. They were friendly and I was as well, I can play a full server and see no one for hours I have looted electro on a full server for 30mins and ran into no one a low server and a small town after the people in the server in the se building. I have been lucky I haven't seen anyone who isn't friendly after 5hours and I have seen 13 players.

remote two story site sounds like the backpack factory near polana. the place to go from the solnichny spawn if you dont intend to stick to the coast. it has decent loot and a water pond behind the site.. its also conveniently located between berezino and sobor, so its imho a pretty good spot.. attracts all kind of ppl

I've learned that you are never safe, regardless of # of players & location. Act as if a gun is being pointed at you at all times.

 

I got killed in a server with 7 people on it as Iiterally ran by someone with an m4 in the forest. I wasn't on guard because I thought "eeh, 7 people. I'm safe."

 

Tough lesson to learn, esp fully stacked with goodies.
