Hi guys - I have been thinking about the possibility of limiting players to a single character per server - largely to prevent loot-farming and ghosting, but also for later development with the advent of camps and bases.

What do you think?

Public hive, 1 character to play them all.

Private server, 1 character per.

That is all.

I would like to see no private hives, they are unstable and don't allow the flexibility that a public one does in terms of player interaction(private you generally get the same people every day) and if it crashes there could be no backup.

I don't think you understand the concept of DayZ.

It would completely defeat the purpose of permadeath when you have more than one character per server.

And the way it currently works there's only 1 character stretched over the servers anyway.

I don't think we should go in the direction of Private Hives already, there are other ways to prevent ghosting / Serverhopping.

I'd like this, at least to see how it goes, but I don't think this is the best solution overall.

If I had the choice to play on a server where I only had that character, I'd do that. I don't think forcing everyone to manage one character for every server is all that great.

How so? Each character is subject to permadeath. And anyway my vote is for only one character at a time. I'm just giving others a chance to put forward their views. Although having two characters say - one for playing with a group and another for lone wolf play seems like a good option for some.

One of the biggest threats to the game at present is server hopping. I welcome other suggestions as to how to tackle this, but I think the one server per character option is more hardline than being able to hop around...

Actually it would actually mean more in death, but the whole reason to create this system.

* Would be to solve server hopping and ghosting, of which would be a massive achievement in it-self.

After putting some thought into what OP is asking, I find it to be a rather elegant and temporary, if not permanent, fix to the server hopping issue.

Lets say you:

a. get a fresh character per server? No more server hopping. No ghosting. Same kind of community forming seen in DayzMod.

b. are limited to having a total of 5 characters?(So you are limited to 5 different servers to play on) Probably a bad idea.

c. get 5 respawns per say 12 hours? Brings more value to each individual character.

d. regional hives?(US pacific, central and east for example) Limits server hopper's potential loot pool. Does not eliminate teleporting/ghosting.

Anyone else have any ideas?

I should note from the outset that this is not a perfect solution - server crashes for example would be a pain in the ass but in lieu of a better idea it might work.

yes and 1

If you're only aloud one character and the server you usually play on is full what happens?

A good point but may be less of an issue with optimization and servers allowing many more players (as Rocket has indicated will be the case in the dev blogs prior to Alpha release).

What the.. One character for each server? What a stupid idea. Just server hopping anti-cheat for like u can hop on another server for next 5 hour etc..

So if the server you're on crashes or restarts you can't play for 5 hours?

EDIT I'm assuming that you mean you CAN'T hop on another server for 5 hours btw

I've got to take a hard line on this; The idea of moving your character between servers is a failure. One that has ended up undermining the game. It's not just server hopping and ghosting but that it removes a lot of the survival aspects and player interaction. On private (but open) servers you can develop a reptutation, be it good or bad, factions can form. On public servers your character has no identity, no history and is just another guy to shoot at. There is little reason to do good or work together, you're just passing through and not really trying to affect the server in any real way.

I know that with connection issues and such, some kind of public hive must be kept but I think that on the whole it detracts from the DayZ experience.

Lets take away the one thing that makes Dayz, Dayz....

If servers were truly dedicated and not ran 3rd party then it may be OK to have one character per server. Till then F that...

won't happen if there is only 40 players max per server, you'll have over 40 people with their character on the same server and if you aren't one first 40 then you can't play. Besides there are many more creative ways to fix server hopping and such that would also improve other game mechanics.

True, but once the player numbers are bumped up... As for the more creative ways that might fix server hopping - would be great if you would elaborate...

True, but once the player numbers are bumped up...

Just because the max allowed number of players per server gets 'bumped up' doesn't solve the problem of: "What the hell do you if the servers you normally play on are FULL..?"

What if the servers you normally play on aren't full, but become popular over time and become full..?

Yeah sure that's an issue. I acknowledge that this isn't a perfect system but it could be better than the current server hopping, ghosting, loot-farming shinanigans. I'm totally open to other ideas to solve these issues but I think this is an option worth exploring.

What you see as a failing of private hives I see as an advantage. They can be unstable and/or not well maintained, but that is down to admins. I'm not sure what you mean by flexibility within the Public Hive. I'm assuming the flexibility to 'jump' servers at will. If so, we've been seeing the 'advantages' of that sort of flexibility already.

I'm not suggesting private hives. Same set up as presently the case, but you can't move a character between servers.

I've always felt that each character should be bound to a single server, if you go to a diff server you spawn a diff character. Being able to hop servers is the most broken thing to realism in this game imo. But if it were done my way there would be issues, like why your favorite server containing your best character is suddenly no longer online and never gets heard from again.

Still with personal buildings and fortifications and what not eventually getting worked in, there will need to be something done about characters freely jumping servers or every time a group of players starts taking over main areas thus"winning" all competition will just server hop.

If The only solution I can think of is instituting a 1 server per Time Period kind of system, You get one character through all servers but can only switch servers once every set number of hours. That would solve a lot of abuses of the current system, and may be the only practical solution to cater to all kinds of play.

I believe exactly the same keep it the way it is. I don't want this to be like WarZ and be able to have 5 character slots, there is no point in that.
