I used to be nice, now I just KOS

Recommended Posts

I used to be nice, going to Kamyshovo and handing out beans to the newbies, even gave a guy a pistol with a clip and 30 rounds to defend himself. Guess what 99% of them did? Tried to kill me. Here I am fully decked out in TTsKO clothing, M4 dressed up like it was going to Prom... obviously not my first day in Dayz. Still.. they tried to kill me, many with bare hands.

From a newbie standpoint, I would probably do the same. Uber geared guy walks up and is actually friendly! Very nice, OOH he gave me beans and water, he must have tons of goodies hidden away in that mountain backpack... I'll just wait until he turns around, hit him in the head until he's unconscious and TAKE ALL THESE GOODIES! THANK YOU ARMED SANTA!

Even the guy I gave the pistol to, I told him to put it in his bag and walk away. He decides to pop the clip in right in front of me. I point my M4 right at him and say don't do it bro and he starts unloading on me! Only hit me once but I killed him and took my pistol back. WTF?

Helping newbies comes with risk and I have just decided the risk isn't worth it. They have nothing to lose so risking death for a mountain of gear all of a sudden isn't a big deal to them. What's the worse that could happen? They die and start 50 feet away from where they just died with the same gear? Big loss right? Don't even get me started on geared players. They're so afraid of dying that they will ALWAYS either shoot or combat log when you try to hold them up.

I have decided to let newbies run off without their beans, and let geared players die without warning. Yes there are good players out there, but they are about 1 in 10. So 9 out of 10 players will be assholes. Too big of a risk to put my life on the line.

So if you ever meet me in game, I'll let my M4 do the talking.

Another tough guy, awesome.

The alpha is filled with new people and missing mechanics to keep people in check. Until then? Sure kill everyone you come across. I've been held up many times, and done the same back. Most encounters always end anti-climatically. If you can't deal with it, just come back after the release and try again.

Can't deal with it? I've been dealing with it perfectly fine. At least I tried being the nice guy.. too many people being dicks in return so not risking my life anymore to help the 10% of decent people in the game.

It's called survival.

It's because inferior humans nowadays (not talking directly to you) don't have patience. They get blinded too easily. :P

Until combat logging is fixed there is nothing you can do about geared players. Newbies on the other hand.. still cant quite grasp why you would give a newbie a pistol. That is just asking to get shot. It isn't about being nice its about being realistic. What do you think that noob is gonna do with that pistol? Just take it and run away? Lets be honest melee weapons are for AFK players/Noobs/Zombies and guns are for killing people. TBH If I just spawned and you ran up and gave me a gun I'd wait for you to turn your back and put one in your skull and take all your gear. Its not KOS or being ignorant, its playing intelligent!!

I also, sometimes, feel the urge to help a clueless person in dayz.

But never just give it to them, for they can kill you when you turn around.

I always break their legs, and put morphin and weapon and food 50 metres from them. When I leave they can get it. Not a second before that.

I see this as the perfect tactic for helping them. I don't know how the legbreaking and morphin system works in the SA, but in the mod it works fine with this tactic.

"Here buddy! Let me help you!" *crack*

I think that doesn't work in SA yet though. Never managed to break my/anyone else's leg.

I stood there talking to him for a good 10 minutes over voice chat, he sounded like a super nice guy, had a few laughs. Said he had been killed like 10 times by bandits, so I decided to give him a pistol to protect himself. He was very polite until he got the gun, then decided he wanted ALL my stuff.

People go from zero to asshole in no time when given a gun, therefore anybody I see with a gun is assumed to be dangerous.

Maybe not hand out weapons/ammo to newspawns for one.  If you're gonna shoot everyone you see...shrug...shoot everyone you see...your prerogative.  But don't try to justify it by blaming your actions on dumb newspawns to clear your guilty conscience. :P

Only time I would ever KOS is if someone has a gun and you're out giving them to people? What do you expect.. As long as you are the only one with a gun and you play nice the world is nice (well ok stupid people will try to melee you but you can easily shoot them and them dying from stupidity is quite appropriate).

It's when the dicks get the guns that problems start (which you have now become...).

Hmm if I manage to get my pc working again I have to test something: Hand out a .45 with one damn shot to newbies at the coast. Just to see how many are lame and stupid enough to try shooting me with it as soon as i turn arround.

Dude if you give me a pistol and ammo at spawn. I would love you so hard and take a bullet for you for sure. We don't all bite the hand that feeds so you know. You could be more careful though, don't put a gun in their hands until you are at a safe distance. Or even give them a melee and see how they react first.

You can still help people. No need to go BANZAI on all because of the bad apples if you truly are that kind of player.

I guess while the experience may be frustrating, you partially have yourself to blame. Maintain minimum distance and have clear rules / warnings. If anyone fucks up and dies it's usually their fault. The helper included.

I once saw a "server hopper" (I think? Maybe the person just hid there) in a firestation tower at Elektrozavodsk. I came up in full military gear and a Mosin or M4, up the stairs slowly. When I saw him I was already in range. He had civilian clothing as if a fresh spawn, holding a pistol (not raised), cowering in the corner and mumbling something I didn't understand. We just stood there for a second, staring at each other before I backed down slowly. I then realized that we probably both could've ended each others lives quickly (if his gun was loaded anyway), yet we didn't. I ran off and yelled "Goodbye!" or something.

Those are the moments I love in DayZ. The most simple human encounter or interaction turning into some kind of stalemate and brainfuck moment with unclear and open results.

One does not get that by shooting anything that moves. That's also a point that shows that not every player is going banzai to get your shit. At least not under all circumstances. So I guess it's worth it, I guess. I recommend that you join a semi-friendly group however, though. Different experience, less risk working in squads, etc.

I really can't understand all this "I used to be a good guy" posts. Not that I don't understand all frustration about "being nice" -> "being killed in the next 30 minutes at most", it's totally okay and such.

But. No. But!

What I don't understand is why you even try being a good guy if you prefer to KoS just because you got killed sometimes by people you help?

First, if even 1 out of 10 (more like 1 out of 3-5 for me, actually, and more like 50% inland\north) is actually grateful for your actions, it already worth it. KoS mentality is not about a game, it's about a community, which was pointed multiple times on this forums.

Second, any player interaction is so much better than just deathmatching all over. The main thing you can do now is interact for the hell of it. KoS is not interaction, anything else is. And this "else" requires balls. Those hairy things, you know. Not to shoot on sight, but to try to communicate and interact with someone in peaceful way, even though you will suffer no consequences after killing each other and have no reason to trust each other whatsoever. It's all about well-known prisoner's dilemma.

It also matters on the receiving end. Being KoS sucks, especially if you both saw each other and you were unarmed/poorly geared and showed no hostility anyway. Being killed at least after a short talk just feels different.

Hell, you can interact even without saying a word. Today stumbled upon a guy on a Rify, I was looking for ammo for my mosin and just exploring things (mosin,fireaxe,top-notch civilian gear were on me at that moment) and he was there with only a fireaxe. Waved at him and passed slowly nearby, awaiting to be hit with his axe (as it should probably be), but he just waved back and walked another direction. And after that waved me again from the rocks around ship while I was still looting. And I think that this is a win-win situation. He lost nothing, I lost nothing, we interacted and shared a couple pieces of gear while exploring this ship. Because why not. And it takes something to not kill everyone in sight just because you are afraid or "oh why then I need this weapon" or "I walked so long to get my current gear". And I don't want to hear the "what else to do" sh*t anymore. Explore and interact, hell, not deathmatch. I'm not against killing, I'm against dumb killing that happens only because someone has gun and itches to use it.

Third. And the main, as for me. If you are making posts like this with a content of "I used to be a good guy but then I took an arrow to the knee", you really tried to be good just to brag about it, IMO. Being killed won't stop you from being good if you really meant to be good. It's another chance to learn and explore the map better while gearing up again and a lot more chances to see people inland that are not here to rub their ego about the amount of kills they have (mostly killing bambis anyway).

I don't meant to be rude with this or to insult someone. If I did, I'm genuinely sorry for that; what I written is purely my vision of this game.

One of the very first nice guys I encountered gave me an FNX with a 15 round mag in it.  I didn't even try to shoot him, just thanked him and moved on.  Anyone who doesn't shoot me on sight and initiates communication has a 99% chance of surviving the encounter.

If someone gets the drop on me with a gun pointed, I'll most likely open fire if they don't immediately say something by the time I see them.  Better to be safe than dead.

Im starting to feel left out... Nobody wants to steal my stuff it seems.  I rarely run into anyone, let alone bandits wanting to rob me.

Ive only used the "raise your hands" button to show my gf it was an option.

Dude, if you got shot it's your own fault.... a couple of tips for you

1. Run in a group, that way he knows that even if he does manage to kill you, he won't be getting away with your gear without someone killing him right back

2. Never take your eyes off of the person you're helping. (This is part of why you need more than 1 person to properly assist noobs).

3. Keep groundrules.. Make them known before you give them a helping hand. You should have told the guy to keep the gun in his inventory and not draw it or load it until after you were out of sight. If you had done this, he never would have drawn the weapon without knowing he would be instantly shot.

The problem isn't that the community sucks; it's that you lack experience.. Rather than taking your mistakes as a lesson to be improved upon next time, you decided "OH FUCK EVERYONE THEY'RE ALL BAD"..

Quite the contrary. I have been killed on sight many times and I have had to defend myself many times.. I have helped others many times and I have been helped by others many times. I've even killed some people on sight myself.. usually within reason. I'm not running around the coast shooting fresh spawns or anything. The difference is, each time I make a mistake I learn from it.

I have come across a couple of very inexperienced bandits...

In one example, 2 guys held me up (I was a freshspawn) at Kamenka military base.. The long story short version is, they ended up getting distracted, and I ran up the hill to another barracks only to find an M4 and a 60 round Stanag mag in the same barracks. I came back down the hill and flipped the script on them, and sent them packing without weapons or shoes.

In another example, a guy shot at me while I was at the well in Elektro.. I ran, and he chased me around one of the residential buildings behind the Church.. he came around the corner, shot at me again, MISSED, and then yelled at me and told me "STOP MOVING, STOP MOVING".. As if he was going to hold me up. Now, why would someone who already shot at me twice attempt to hold me up? He obviously just wanted my gear.. I had a mosin and ammo to boot, as well as a bunch of Camo clothing. Thing was, he didn't have control of the situation.. I shot him once, he yelled for me to stop moving again, and I shot him again and dropped him. You can't hold up someone unless you have control of them.

I've also come across people who I KNOW would have shot me on sight, IF they had a weapon.. I was rolling with a group of 3 this morning at NWAF, we are all fully geared and well armed.. I was running towards the Central Police Station near the Fire Station, and I saw a guy in Camo clothing with a Payday mask running out of it.. He yelled "friendly", and I told him I was as well. Of course, all he had was an axe, so OF COURSE he was friendly.. he was out gunned! He was very sketch, and I know that if he had an M4 he would have shot me.. I didn't care.. Offered him help, gave him a Saline Bag, and sent him on his way. There's a small chance that interaction he had with me will change his approach in the future.. probably not, but .. maybe?

Lol, luckily my friends sometimes hold me back from killing. Yesterday, for instance, i found a guy with a splitting axe in the bottom floor of a construction site. I started to walk into his room, and he hit the doorway with the axe. So me, fully geared in ttsko with an m4, I didn't want to lose my stuff. So, I ran away a bit. I call him out over steam to my clan mates, hearing cries of " friendly, sorry you scared the ***** out of me!" I go back and I tell my mates of his cries. One of him suggests I ask him if he needs anything. So I go outside of the building with him and ask him if he needs anything. Then my mates show up and surround him. "This is our clan, we're not going to hurt you." "Holy ****, there's like 5 of you!(There were 4)". So, a clan mate of ours drops him food and soda, as he said he needed a drink. If my mates had not suggested being friendly back, I likely would have killed him to drop a potential threat and get gear.
