Your Greatest Friend in DayZ

Recommended Posts

NOTE: First off, this is my opinion, so if you think that there is a better tactic to survival then go ahead and post it, but this is one of my favorite tactics to use when faced with a human/potential bandit.

So you are probably wondering what in the world I am talking about. That is simple because to me the greatest thing you can have in DayZ is charisma or otherwise known as the ability to persuade people to think or do what you want. You know, charisma won't get you everywhere but if you are in a jam with just a pistol trying to keep a bandit from looting your DMR with no ammo, it can be useful. Using a simple "us" instead of "me" in a sentence like "You can leave or WE are going to attack!"

I'll tell you a story. This man was coming towards me and I was in open space. I would have nothing better to do than to just run, shoot, or try to get him into running away. He didn't see me yet so I had my chance. I said that we were going to take him out if he didn't drop his weapon and leave. The man asked where we were and I said that he didn't need to know and that he had 10 seconds to comply or be shot. The man just dropped his gun and ran way in the other direction.

The man had a M40A3 with quite some ammo. Whether he was a good shot or not, I would have been taken out because you can't kill a man with some flares. I was glad for it and I still try to use tactics like that whenever they seem useful. I'm not saying that they work every time because some people can still take a chance just to see if you were lying.

So you tell me what you think the greatest thing in DayZ is. Because I expect just about everyone to disagree with me.

Since I try to play hero I will always respond to bandits and threats with bullets. I have only had a dozen or so people try to get me to put my weapon down. The first time I gave up my gun and got shot in the back of the head afterward. After that I have always fought back and only once did I die trying to kill them. There were actually four of them and I killed two and got a horde of zombies on our location that took out another one of them. All the other times the guy trying to be a tough guy got shot. Its assumed that anyone sticking me up is trying to get my gun and ammo and will kill me afterwards. Given that I have no reason not to die trying. At the very least our fight will bring every zombie in town so if I die they will either die as well or drastically lower the amount of ammo they have.

Last time I get flares thrown at me by an unarmed fella it was to let his his sniper mate know which bush my head poking out of.

May have been coincidence.. but I'm too paranoid to believe that.

Some guy who cornered me in one of the apartments.

He just stood there as I held my breath (no mic at the time, so i was just hoping).

He looks up and down, and then says 'you can follow me! theres a shotgun on the floor below if you want it' So he was my friend for half an hour until we got seperate because, stupid me decided to make immature jokes in side chat, and got left behind.

I met up with him later, and then he died.

That doesn't seem like charisma. Seems like deception.

________

However, I do think one of the better tactics in close quarters is to engage them over direct. Whether they're friendly or out for blood, if they talk back you're gaining information.

1) What type of person they seem like.

2) Their location ingame

3) Approximate age

I find people much less likely to shoot you if you manage to strike a proper conversation as well. If you can make them laugh, all the better. Even with the KoS mentality of many players, most people I've talked to that respond tend to settle down afterwards. Saving bullets and potentially making new friends.

Most people with a mic who talks back will give you a better chance of getting out of most problems I find, people with no mic are not to be trusted.

But I'm greatest one would be just picking up people off the coast when a have a set of wheels and finding out what they know and ended up have a fun few hours of driving around fixing a heli or a better set of wheels. But a mic is a must.

Probably doesn't hurt that at least in a few cases it has been true for some of these guys.

One time looting a few military tents I warned my friend he had a guy coming in on him. I was on overwatch for a couple of them. He had a survivor skin so I didn't shoot. Instead my friend moved to a position where I would have a clear shot. He told him he was friendly and didn't want to shoot him but would if he had to and that his buddy had eyes on them both right now. Guy decided to try and kill him anyway. He was down and dead in seconds but my friend needed a bloodbag. Then we looted him and moved on. Kept another friend near me to use a silenced weapon to ward off zombies and spot players sneaking up on us while my friend looted the area. Works pretty well.
