[SA] Deathmessages - yes or no?

Should be deathmessages enabled in the SA?

  1. 1. Should be deathmessages enabled in the SA?

Recommended Posts

I am wondering what the opinion of the community is regarding this matter.

For me deathmessages are just immersion and gameplay breaking. It takes away a great feature that would make combat way more thrilling.

Why would you know when someone is dead? If you want to make sure, you just go up to him and shoot him in the head. In the SA this will actually a decision that in some situation could be hard to make. Do you want really waste your last bullet just to make sure he is dead?

But that is just my opinion. What do you think guys?

No, if you want to confirm a kill you should have to go give the body a poke. this simply adds another element of danger which will improve gameplay.

Agreed, death messages ruin the fun of not knowing if you got him or not.

Yep, imagine someone going stealth on a team, and for SOME reason, they don't use microphones. He would then stab some dude.

The melee guy using stealth would be completely busted when a death message comes out.

This is just an example.

Good example, it would definitely ruin any kind of stealthy kill tactics because the moment you drop someone their entire group will know instantly. Without death messages and if everyone is just using ingame, it would be possible to pick people off and their friends might just think they aren't talking.

I also think death messages don't belong.

However in my experience with this game the amount of players calling for a hardcore, realistic, survival simulator are far outnumbered by the people who want an arcade murder fest.

Despite the obvious flaw that death messages represent, contemporary game players have been groomed to play for statistics to gain bragging rights. As a result many servers even show who killed who.

Take one look at the types of servers being run for this game and you will see that the people who want DayZ to stick to it's original vision are outnumbered by those who want a cool game to murder people.

Which is exactly why DayZ should not have death messages.

If there's so many people who want an arcade zombie shooter with stats then they're spoiled for choice. DayZ was never going to be that and people would be fools for even wanting it.

Beeing the only guy having voted for yes, I'd like to elaborate.

Like most of you, I do not think that death messages should pop up instantly. But how about having a message like "Player has died from gunshots 13 minutes ago" when a player studies the dead body of that guy?

Yeah, thats how it should be, though i'd rather it was a bit more vague, something like "Player died from gunshots very recently".

I wouldn't mind the text for when I'm hungry to say: "Wizard needs food badly."

Seriously though, I would think this is a "no-brainer" (zombie pun?). If there is to be any authenticity at all there can't be floating text to let me know when someone dies.

The heads up text in-game will likely be personal, experiential dialogue, which are mostly physical status indicators.

I personally hate death messages just due to the shear fact that you can't pull stealth kills. Say there's a group you've been stalking that for some reason uses in-game chat rather than a 3rd party chat room (skype, vent, teamspeak, etc..). You have a silenced pistol and go to take out a member who's gone astray from the base. "[1337] xXLeGiTeYeBaLlXx HAS BEEN KILLED BY BILLY"  Boom, game over, your cover is blown. THAT is why I don't like death messages.

I don't care who die how they die, only guy I care if he die is me and I know already when I die because I am dead ;)

also I like when I shoot some guy and I don't know if he die or not, I don't want some magic bullshit message from heaven say me 'idiot was killed'

if he die I hear flies when I going to body, if he live is nice surprise and I make bandage and begin fun time torture this guy and make abuse in direct

I don't think that death messages really have a place in DayZ, it removes a lot of the tactical aspect from the game which is a big advantage to some players, especially those that play alone.

It will also allow players to set traps for groups, adding another dyanmic element to the fray.

Imagine you are facing 2 or 3 enemies, they split up and you manage to take out one quietly with a silenced weapon from your vantage point in the tree.
The rest of the group eventually come looking for him and locate his body - they have to get close enough to inspect the body if they want to see what happened to him.

I voted for no, although I'm not 100% dead set against it being a server side option.

But why? It would make more sense for that to be part of the 'study body' function than for it to pop up on every player in the server's screen. :S

Agreed. I have no idea what positive effect this could have.

But actually I think this is a real problem with the current DayZ generation, even for me. Almost all of us are used to side chat. People are talking, you see when a player dies etc.

This however will disappear in the SA and I think that it will let us feel very lonely, if we do not play with others. Right now there is a communication between the players on a server. Even smalltalk takes away the whole depression of being alone. You have no idea about the other players. There could be a massmurder group running through electro, killing lots of players. But you wouldn't know about it until you actually see them. And even if there are none of these bandits, you don't know. Normally in DayZ there is always someone saying "Bandit group highly armend at x" or you see like 4 deathmessages at a time. But all of this is gone, so now you never know what is happening in chernogorsk.

Yeah, that's true.

I play on 2 servers. One is an 'enhanced vanilla' server, it has more or less stock settings with sidechat enabled; and the other is a 'hardcore' server, it has pretty much everything (third-person, waypoints etc.) disabled and of course the side channel and death messages are disabled there. You can definitely feel the difference between the two. With side enabled you'll constantly see stuff like 'Who's shooting in Stary?' that lets you know that there are at least two players in Stary. There's a lot more paranoia without side chat. That's another thing that I'm definitely looking forward to in the standalone...

There is another thing I would like to ask you, but I don't know if a poll is necessary.

It is about the map, because right now you can set a waypoint and you know where you are. Actually I would like to have a real map, not this obvious digital stuff. With "real" I mean ingame real. In Arma it is very weird. The map does not look like a map, but more like GPS data (you can zoom in etc.). And additionally it somehow loads the map as a kind of menu. It would be very cool if the map would just be something you hold in your hands or just a simple texture on the screen. And I think we really shouldn't see where we spawn. But to be able to find out where we are we could just look at a sign. This requires the signs to be in english. And I think that has to be done anyway because the characters are probably native people and able to read their language.

Actually that would be two polls. One for the spawning and the other for the map.

Map being just a texture on screen wouldn't be very practical, would it? We'd still need to be able to zoom all the way in somehow.

Death messages and waypoints have no place in DayZ. I can't think of one reason either should stay in the game. No to signs in English though.

And what has this to do with whether the map is a texture or not?

Right now you zoom in and the map actually changes like it would in a GPS. The details for example coordinates do change. But I really don't think that's necessery, in fact I don't think that we need coordinates at all.

The problem with saying "death messages are used to confirm," is that there's quite a few other ways to confirm it that are just as handy.  Even if you're removed everything you have to confirm if the unconscious damage bug is fixed everyone will just shoot you in the head after you're down if they're too far away to hear the flies.  The death messages plus side chat have been a great source of comedy throughout the year and I think it should be an option to have them enabled.
