The infection dilema

Recommended Posts

the other day was real bad for me:P,

I managed to get to the NWAF unharmed, and when i was checking the barracks a zed punched me trough a wall and i was instantly infected.........

I mean infected after one hit, it just isn't fun that way.

dont get me wrong the infected idea is great but maybe you get an infection to easy?

S.

A case of imagination going beyond an engines capabilities I reckon.

You react sensibly 9 times out of 10 (100?), but the environment, subterrainian -z, ghost-z and Chuck noriz let you down in a lot of instances and this time a bandage won't save you.

I think the infection risk is a good too, an added threat, but with the wrong place and time, there's the chance your find yourself on a constant quest for blood and a cure., It's desperate way to live if you decide to fight for your life, however a flock of sheep consumed over a day or more  and its ..godamn.. just a box would be nice so I can get back to doing other things (like getting shot in the head by an angry farmer).

Love the mod but can't wait for the new challenges and solutions that the SA will provide, and hopefully those random acts of WTF!ness are gone.

Last time a zombie infected me, I carried the desease for two days before curing myself. I even had AB's on me because I have a huge stash, only yesterday I ate two packs just to make room for some "meat." Also, I only drink boiled water and consume human flesh. Yes, that's right, I eat people. Infection really is the last thing on my mind.

Also, is it me or are zeds crap again?

Predator or scavenger?

What do you mean by crap?

I don't think your post is pointless. I welcome all frustration and complaint (and you did it in a humorous way). This is an opportunity to offer another player encouragement and possibly some tips.

First, don't give up! Infection always existed in the mod, it was simply nonfunctional. Now it is functional. Yes, the game is harder. But isn't that why we like this game? It took me some time to get better so as not to be easily defeated by infection. And I suck. I know you can do it.

Second, antis aren't that hard to find. Two posts in this very thread giving shout outs to tmw for saving their asses. Where do you think they got those antis from? Apparently they can survive enough in this game to have spare antis and go help you. Personally I have a backstock of 8 or so antis.

Last, for quite awhile the game was too easy. One could go around doing stupid shit with no consequences. No longer. One should know better than to run into the nwaf barracks with no ammo. That's like me complaining about every time I go on top the firehouse in cherno and start saluting I promptly get my head blown off.

Definately predator. And by crap I mean, I pay no attention to them. I wander through a town doing my thing, they're a mere nuisance and seem lke they're no real threat again.

now it's 1:16 chance to be cured by resting in your tent..in 1.8 i've read chance will increase..i'm infected and after wasting 4 mp5sd mags searching berezino's every drop, without luck, i'm just going to wait for patch and try again with my tent.

i'm in your same situation OP: came down from my happy hermit mountain to help a friend only to get infected from the last zombie who decided to chase me.

how i dealt with this:

call a friend to make you a transfusion,

find a tent

transfusion

hunt every fucking animal you see

wait for profit(1.8)

(all with occasional raids to find AB and attempt to rest)

it requires a downgrade of gear obviously..you cannot spray your dmr's bullets searching for that shit..and you'll need more space to carry more meat. it's just a different mechanic/deviation from your natural gameplay

hmm firing anything at NWAF tends to aid in getting your head blown off rather than chewed off in my limited experience.

and while I appreciate the medics a guardian angel server hoping to me and saving my life seems odd.

@DrDuff

Just as well. The idea of consuming a stale corpse is just revolting.

Nuisance yes, but it only takes one hit, so a threat (to me anyway) if I don't have the 'antidote'

I'm a mobile meatlocker at times too with nothing but an axe, a pack and vest full of assorted meats.

Someone like DrDuff could live off me for a month

I'm sure if anyone had seen me chase a rabbit with an axe in such states they would be rather amused.

They stop, you get to them and off they go again..see a cow in the distance and its ah stuff you bugs a brain dead bovine is easy

Tent are pretty useless now. Theres a 1% chance to cure infection once evey 5 minutes...

You are pretty dead when you are trying to cure your infection every 5 minutes without hunting for meat generally.

Best solution is just to kill your self and reloot your body or get your friend to pick you up. You can try to find Antibiotics but they are extremely rare, rarer then a mountain dew in my opinion.

I don't like the infection either to be honest. Just consider urself dead and start over.

Avoid zombies at all cost. Don't try to fight them. Not even with a hachet. They're too bugged to fight with and will hit you anyway.

Knew it was low, low enough I've wondered whether its a server specific setting and if wasting time even trying

Hey man don't knock it until you try it. Kinda tastes like pork but also like chicken, I call it chorken. As for getting hit, don't do that. As for people opting for suicide, we have a suicide script on our server, should you want to take the cowards way out.

agree with OP you have my beans anyone who says its easy to avoid zombies doesnt get hit thru walls. As said before the zombies seem to have supersonic go go gadget hands OR that retarded combat roll epic fails your vault and you get smoked. On a side note I have been finding AB x2 at most chopper sites, if im unlucky its painkillers x2 :(. but yeah been spending alot of time, hunting animals while looking for chopper sites instead of zombies and bandits its getting a little old.

Yeah I don't get hit through walls because I am aware of my surroundings and know where the zeds are. I also don't enter a building followed by a trail of the undead. C'mon people use your brains, you must have them! Why else do the zeds follow you? :D

C'mon people, getting hitted tru walls is far beyond getting old, they just can not fix that problem.

avoid standing close to walls and avoid running into houses\building where you trap yourselfs.

go at an slower pace in cities, either let the zeds wander away or shoot them, antis are still in the game, find them! and if things dont go as planned, seek help, ie TMW that is wat we do anyway! or get antis tru trades be inventfull, dont be scared :)

You don't understand germs, do you. When a player is infected he is not infected with the virus that is causing the Zeds to be Zeds. Our player is not that way because they are IMMMUNE to that particular virus(which must be airborne given the number of Zeds). also, antibiotics do not cure viruses, antivirals do. antibiotics cure bacterial infections. You can get infections from the water with things like Dysentery. You can get infections from cuts and scrapes and end up with Gangrene from Clostridium which is about everywhere in nature. You can end up with Strep which can become Pneumonia or Bronchitis if not taken care of with antibiotics and is life threatening at that point.

Not all infections would make you cough but the game mechanic is more to let you know you need a course of antibiotics all the ones I mentioned can be fatal if left untreated.

All the Zeds are infected with a virus but I assume the "Infected" zeds are probably more disgusting and unclean than usual, teeming with bacteria. Maybe they are gangrenous themselves or have a form of leprosy(which is caused by a bacteria).

You don't understand zombie movies do you.

In fact it's so worthless you might as well not even bother coding it in.

the point of all threads in this forum is killing time while we wait for standalone...that is the mainpoint of all threads, now stop nagging about the meaning behind threads...if u dont get it, get the fluff out of here

..ok.. think you quoted the wrong dude but all good  :D

Well all I can say is there seems to be some l33t folk who never get unwanted attention from zeds anywhere anytime.  I will try harder.

I'm normally sitting on about 120 zombie kills with mainly a hatchet before I ever perish or grow tired of living with a cough, so I'm not a complete muppet.

I'm not planning on changing how I play except to try and gather more AB's by non looty means so I can continue doing what I do.

My wording for this thread seems to have come across as a serious moan, it wasn't. Just a cycle of life I found myself in from time to time.

I'll try and word things a little differently in the future.

I find the infection pretty brutal, but somewhat fitting.  As more of a solo fanboi of playing in hopes with high anguish to socially interact with other players armed with a crossbow, I think what I'm missing the most is the much lesser amount of wildlife around so I can't undo easily stupid mistakes anymore.  Combine it with the infection and the first viral fakkah to mike tyson bleed infection invisibru punch through a stairway/wall or whatever and there's a feeling of injustice ^_^

Yesterday after a long dayz session I fond myself infected 3 times, of which I don't cycle the medical loots.  I just hope to find AB, if not, I move to the next town etc.  Feels more legit - yes, out of those 3 infections I did not find any AB's.

I thought: might as well find a tent to rest and withstand the health drain with wildlife.  Well finding a tent appeared not to be so great either.  Out of the 3 infections,  I found one tent combined with the AB searching.  I ended up getting slowly pissed off in the end not exactly because of how things are more scarce now, but because every single infection occuring there was a glitched zed story inserted in it.  That's the only thing that really bothers me in the end.  Ah and yeah, the random passing out every 5 seconds/30 seconds.

It just makes me feel like one time where I went tryhard with a broken leg at myshkino and decided to crawl all the way up to to nwaf to find morphine but didn't, to be a less frustrating event than fking passing out every now and often...  Anyways, I just randomly put the tent near a stupidly popular city like cherno just 1km out of it, stashed my starter finds and proceeded to suicide because given the blood I had left, there was no point betting that in the next 20 minutes I'd hit that succesful rest.

Aside from all of the coolstory bro part and the real facts of what pisses me off about infection is that I just wondered what could the impact be if we could have some kind of new loot table that gives you a bit more chances of finding AB?  And to what amount of chances should shrugging off an infection via the means of tent should be?  The reason behind it is because of the global scale player traffic:  could being infected shuffle and bring more unpredictability to your events before you reach nwaf?  I'm talking, wtf this random guy in this unnamed forest part where there's normally nobody that just happened to be there, because he was resting but had the jump on you.  I'm talking, the random "pointless" towns where nobody stops at but someone just happened to be there too, because now you might find AB's there.

My main reproach with DayZ's traffic was that overtime the route and events just feel linear and too centric because of the loot of interest being either up north, or down south/east with all the rest in the middle with a big "meh why bother" except the sobor's but they are tactically suicidal to decide to go visit imo - to be more exact, to get back out of.

I apologize if some of you feel I'm going on a tangeant but all I'm trying to say is that I think infection being a lot more brutal could be something beneficially used to affect things on a larger scale.  Just need to scrap the "might as well just die" or the "I'll just rest at my super stashed tent until I shrug it off eventually."  Heck, maybe even give heroes a lessened chance of getting infected/higher chance of shaking it off.

TL;DR

infection, viral zeds, scarce wildlife, rare AB, ridiculously (but rightfully so) low chances of tent rest isn't the problem... it's the zed that glitches the hell out of you so often that is... ^^

Welcome to the infection counselling service. Unfortunately all our AB's are busy right now. Please hold for as long as your blood supply lasts.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=abZlWqVeLzg

Thanks for holding. You there?

Hello...?

Your right that it does make you consider going to places you would normally ignore.

I normally consider the eastern towns, kamyshovo, three valleys and solnichniy a waste of space but now I do burn through them in speed look mode before bursting out the other side and finding a bush to lose the interest I got while looking.

I've never found any there or in the more inland townships to date, I can't not look though :)

I play on a private hive which restricts your ability to farm/gather by server hoping as you could on public servers if you happen to have a bad run.

Now I could play on public servers but at the moment nz server populations are pretty low and the zeds seem to be retarded (not sure if z behavior is variable or its just been a coincidence)

Sounds like a solution to my problem doesn't it, less population and toned down z's but frustration aside I prefer a more challenging environment, just have to ensure I get myself at the right places at the right time before every other tom, dick and harry has ran through.

You don't understand zombie movies do you.

You mean like "28 Days Later" and "28 Weeks Later" the movies the Zeds in DayZ are based off of? What they have is a variant of the Ebola Virus engineered into the "Rage" virus. Still a virus.

This isn't "Night of the Comet" radioactive dust zombies, Romero zombies, Resident Evil zombies, or the horrible "Return of the Living Dead" zombies. Heck, these are not even "I Zombie" zombies.

It's okay if you don't understand modern medicine or that disease is not caused by "evil spirits" but actually microscopic organisms that enter the body and might be bacterial, viral, fungal, or parasitic in nature and that the treatment off all of them requires different means. It's okay if you don't get that antibiotics don't cure the common cold or flu. Just admit it.

The problem with the infection ... still ... despite clear explanation and reasoned suggestion ... is that it has still been kept as 100% lethal, albeit in 1.8's 90 minutes instead of 1.7.7.1's 60 minutes.

What on earth was really the problem with reverting infection damage to reducing player health to a low blood level?  Or inflicting a large, mildly variable and finite amount of damage over time that has a chance at least of being out-replenished or limited to avoid death?

Still don't buy the idea.  Hunt for antibiotics simulator 2013 rolls on.

Part of the fix for constant infections would be going back to a slightly more reasonable ability to hack at zeds with an axe without dying by random glitch hits.

I was playing again when I reposted this after a long time. My character was 372 days old. I had hundreds of axe/headshot kills. I used to walk somewhat fearlessly into towns and while avoiding players, had no problem killing a zed at a time with stealth, and was damn good at it. Other than an occasional broken leg from a miss hit where they'd get me, I was able to survive on an axe alone. Now, Ill literally hit a zed in the head 3x and they'll still come at me. Let alone the fact that they'd be 15 ft away and I hear a sound that Ive been hit and am now infected.

So I wouldn't have a problem with the infection as much if both variables weren't worse...zed randomness/glitches + infection probability rate. I wish I played more often. I really enjoy the game..and part of it is getting used to the new glitches, patches, and mods to where you are comfortable enough to survive in them and know the ropes. Every time I come back now there's something different and its frustrating. Cant wait until there is a STANDARD game to play that's not dynamic in its gameplay. Then again, alpha and beta game versions are that way for a reason..our experiences are what help the final product.

I just wish there were deer or more wild animals to hunt. Maybe becoming a bandit isn't a bad idea..all the free survival necessities and none of the effort in obtaining it :)
