First vs Third Person Discussion (Dslyecxi video)

I would definitely like to see the actual periscope.

Perhaps they could make it a craftable item.  Once you craft it 3rd person is enabled.

It's just the same as my var2.

But personally i prefer my var1.

I didn't see your posts, some interesting ideas.

If the periscope were to become visible, I think it should be about the same size as a player's head and EXACTLY where the camera itself is. You only see it it they can see you, so it has the same effect as being able to see someone who is peeking around a corner. Also an indicator of what direction they're looking at is very important.

I think a lot of people would find that this looks really silly - players walking around with this pole and camera strapped to their back which zips around corners and above their heads to let them see around. But that illustrates exactly how silly the whole 3rdP thing is.

I'd much rather see the characters head.

so a detached head floating in space? Perhaps the head and torso should be included?

Or do you mean you'd rather just remove 3rdP.

The idea of having a floating icon indicating someone using third person ignores the issue of someone being able to see you without putting themselves in danger.

If any kind of 3rdp is to used i'd rather it prevented people from being able to see around corners when they simply shouldn't be able to but still allowed people to see their character as they played.

In that case, make the icon take damage equivalent to a headshot.

Even without that, it still removes a large part of the advantage.

If the icon takes damage then its no different to them just actually sticking their head around the corner, making the whole thing pointless.

All you manage to achieve is breaking everyones immersion by having floating orbs above peoples heads.

That's the entire point. Most of them claim they're not using it as an exploit to see around corners, they say it's about seeing their character, not feeling ill from first person and so on. If that is true, this gives them all that without the advantages in combat.

The immersion is already broken with third person in my opinion. We're using invisible floating cameras - this is LESS realistic than visible ones.

If having a gunfight via floating orbs sounds crappy to you, I have bad news: If you play on third person servers, you're already doing it.

As a compromise i say we have an option where we can choose whether or not our character has 3rd person view enabled.

New Character Selection Screen.

I hate that Rocket implies the standalone will require third person. He talks about leaving it up to the player to pick a first person only server, but when the game is built around having third person, who is going to run/play first person only?

For example, if you can't tell where exactly you've been shot or are wounded in first person, relying on third person to solve this problem just reinforces an exploitable system. Are we first person advocates going to be at some kind of artificial disadvantage because we don't use third person? Shouldn't the game be changed so that you CAN figure out this stuff in first person view?

I'm not totally against having third person view optional, but it shouldn't be optional just for the sake of pleasing first person players. The game should be the same in first or third. If one is simply better, there's no point in having the option.

I just had an idea which would eliminate most advantages 3P has in combat while still allowing players to use it.

Put a visible object in the air exactly where the player's 3P camera is. It should also show what direction they're looking. Make the invisible periscope visible.

EDIT - added the concept to this image I made before:

Is it so different from this?

That luckily is turned off in DayZ. But it's the same class of things as 3d person view: a crutch for making things easier you should learn to live without as soon as you can.

Excuse me, it was late, i actually thought you were making a serious suggestion.

I must be thick or something I just cant see the problem you want 1st person view then play on the 1st person view servers then you wont have to see the great unwashed having fun doing our silly 3rd person stuff , everyones happy .

Choice is still a great idea .

Players who want first person only seem to want to force everyone to do so to populate first person servers for their entertainment, judging by this thread. It's quite selfish, especially as there seem to be plenty of first person only players who could fill servers themselves if they wanted. The whole thing seems only to be an issue for players who primarily play for pvp, but they want to put it on the rest of us too.

It is not FOR PvP. It is because of PvP. You can't play DayZ without PvP because the others will force it upon you. You can try to avoid it, but that means you're on the run...and stalked by bandits using 3rd person view to their advantage.

If you leave the choice to the players they obviously tend to the more comfortable setting for them. But comfortable does not mean fair or sensible. That's why I think players should be forced in 1st person only. If they have to deal with it, whey will...or go.

Of course the 3rd person lovers want to say the exact same to the 1st personers...the difference is that 3rd person view is ridiculous and breaking common sense. 1st person is not. Or would anybody want to play DayZ in 3d person view only?

I believe the reason why people who like PvP want 1st person and the rather non-PvP'ers tend to need 3rd person is the main reason why there's this kind of quarrel since the beginning of (DayZ) time: the non-PvP'ers come from a non-PvP background, playing games like Minecraft or whatever while PvP'ers love 1st person shooters and therefore are used to move in 1st person only...while others complain about getting sick by it and stuff like that.

It really does baffle me as well. And yes, some of these FPV only people are very selfish

I'm sitting here reading all the FPV only comments and even though they know they will have FPV only servers, they just can't get over the fact that other people will be playing third person view on totally different servers and will be happy and having fun. Some FPV only players want it their way or the highway, that's crazy to me.Even Rocket himself had to tell FPV only people on reddit that he doesn't want to get rid of 3rd person totally.

If i was one of the super hardcore FPV only players, instead of arguing for complete removal of TPV i would argue for the same amount of FPV servers as there will be TPV servers. For example if there are 10 FPV servers and there are 10 TPV/FPV servers everyone is happy, except the people that want to force a play style on others.

It really is that simple, it's not complex or hard to solve at all. It's about server choice guys,we all should have a choice.

There are many ways to play Dayz without pvp you sell the game very short if you think that , I play pvp sure but I also play non pvp and also I play sometimes without guns at all just straight survival , this game is and will be so much more than just a first person shooter I hope .

cheers

As it is currently 3rd person is quite literally easy mode, I believe it greatly undermines the whole concept of DayZ being a hardcore survival simulator.

If they can come up with a system that allows 3rd person to be used without people being able to simply see things that their character shouldn't be able to see then great, everyones happy right?

If your answer to that is "No, i want to use 3rd person because there's less risk." then frankly i have no sympathy.

Great easy mode it is then but that's the way many many people want to play , they are not telling you how to play why do you want to force them to play your way , weather it undermines the concept is totally your opinion and fair enough I don't agree but with a Choice we can all play happily , yes ?

One solution would be to put the "eyes" of the infected zombies in third person as well on servers where it is activated. Imagine zombies with the same line of sight as a player in third, seeing over walls, inside and outside of buildings and around corners without you ever seeing them. Imagine the outrage. But it is fair since it's the same for everyone right? :)

Can someone point me to a post where I am being selfish by the way? Getting tired of this bashing, especially since I have been trying to keep this on a good level.

Totally agree i'm simply expressing my opinion. I'm not trying to tell anyone how they should play, just voicing my opinion on how i want the game to be made.
