Chat in Standalone

Recommended Posts

I don't know if it would be possible with the arma engine, but I just got an idea. So, if you write something into direct chat (and in SA there is just the direct chat and the radios) the thing what you wrote pops up over you head. Why? Because if you write something, someone else would hear it. Ofcourse he would know where this voice is coming from, if the text pops up near you, he actually knows where you are. If someone writes something behind you, a chatmark (similar to a mark on the map) will direct you to the direction.

This could be cool for teaming up, because someone knows exactly where you are if you talk to him (like in real life). And secondly chatting near an enemy is dangerous. Maybe there could be a whisper mode, which is like 2-5 meters, a talking mode which is 30-50 meters and a shouting mode with 300-400 meters (I am just guessing).

Why this idea? Because there are many, many people who are not playing with a headset, and shouting for example is important to allow friendly interaction. But like I said, I think this won't work with the arma engine, however just an idea.

I like it. kind of :/ It's more like a traditional MMO system with "speech bubbles"

I guess one issue I could see with it is that when moving around as a group you'd have to be constantly moving your view to see what peeps are saying whereas atm you can just chat as long as you're near enough.  I'm not sure peeps would like it for basic communication because to hear people IRL you don't actually have to look at them to hear them, they just need to be near by.

It's hard for me to sympathise really because I've always played with a mic so I'm just used to chatting to whoever I want without too much thought.

Nice idea, but that would imo cause a disadvantage for those who use headsets. If you would talk via mic, enemies around would probably hear it as well.. If you would write something and what you write would pop up as a text above your character and if your char is between tight woodeds or sorta, no one other than you and the one you mean to talk would know what you write.

The texts that are written will be visible through the objects and environments ?

Maybe instead of a chatbubble with text above the head, just have a small chat bubble (if your within hearing range and only for direct) and keep the text box at the bottom.  Or possibly keep both with an option to turn the chat bubbles off.

that now makes more sense. a "chatbox" would solve the having-disadvanges issue, which I think rocket would not like to let happen considering him being the one against the chatbox due to immersion purposes..

I would also have the chat bubble show up when someone's using VOIP in direct.  But this might be a bit difficult with what Rocket wants for Radios. (IE you put a radio down on your frequency, start talking to yourself on another radio, wait for idiot to show up when he hears your voice and blow up the bomb the 2nd radio is sitting on)

I think in all honesty, a game like DayZ needs to be played with a mic.  I know some peeps can't afford one (although they are super cheap now days) or need to be quiet at night etc and I know there are some deaf players too but the social element in DayZ is so important that without one it's like playing with your hands tied behind your back.  If you run into a stranger that first 3-5 seconds of contact is so important that saying the right thing could stop a random killing.

Communication is just so important in DayZ I honestly couldn't imagine playing it without a mic.

While on the topic of this, if anyone needs a cheap headset, here is one.http://www.amazon.com/Universal-Stereo-Gaming-Headset-TM-YB100A/dp/B001FY7LBQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1376619182&sr=8-1&keywords=gaming+headset

I had this one for a while.  The sound quality and mic quality are really good and I suggest it if you don't have much cash to spend.

It makes sense for people to have mics. Arma itself costs 30+ dollars, I think? And plus a decent computer to play Arma2/DayZ well, you'd think that people could afford a mic.

That idea only applies with games like The Sims, PS Home and such which I consider just casual social chatrooms. The way DayZ has it is just fine.

I don't know.  I like side chat because it takes away from the boring walking since you have someone to talk to.  Dayz can get boring.  (At times I feel like its a walking simulator!)

But side chat can also be misused.  It can be used to reveal player locations and such.  I am on mixed opinions about this.

Side chat being got away would make the game boring..

May I ask in how many servers you saw people constantly talk in side-chat? How often do you use it in personal? Just being curious..

I had an interesting conversation yesterday on side then i was invited to a private teamspeak channel and they dropped me off at a white off road [that needed a tire] with a few guns and random ammo. Unfortunately i died soon after and lost an m40 but i will try to return to it any time i can until it no longer is there.

Immersion breaker for me, but if allot of people like it.. make it optional.

voice is really important..it really saves your life in a lot of situations..some where you cannot trust a player enough to stop moving or putting your weapon down..push a button and explain yourself..

I couldn'r watch the video till the end.. it annoyed me THAT much.

I'd just shoot them if they tried to communicate, if not for gear, for my sanity.

I'd even go a step further: No Mic, no communication.

In days where every laptop has a mic, there is software for mobilephones to communicate with games and stuff like that. Not having a Mic is like not having a Mouse.

And if someone dos not have a mic installed, his character should randomly "talk" so people become aware of his position. Just to make sure people don't deactivate the mic for dayZ to talk just in TS/skype/....

Ah the old days of Ultima online where large discussions where a pain to follow because chat would appear over the speaker's head.

None of that "devolving" to IRC that every games are using now.
