Camelbacks

Recommended Posts

Hi, so I've been thinking that Camel-backs can have a nice place in this game.

If you don't know what a Camel-back is:

rec-accessories-antidote.jpg

It is basically a water sachet that you put in your backpack, then you have a pipe that you hang somewhere so that it can reach our mouth, so you just bit and suck the valve to drink water. They are most commonly used in 3 liter sizes

So that will be the basics of a camel-back, but adding it to the game, there is a lot of aspects that can and in my opinion needs to be looked at.

How you use it:

You should be able to fill it like any water bottle. You should also be able to drain water bottles into it. The boiling process can be made the same as a water bottle.

Then if it is in your inventory OR your backpack, it should drain at a constant rate, but as it is draining (while there is still water inside) your water icon should stay full.

The drain rate should be determined as 1 liter of water from a water bottle keeps you going for say 2 hours, then the camel-back should drain from full to empty in 6 hours.

So basically what will happen is you will fill it up and your hydration icon will say full green trill the camel-back is empty.

Inventory slots: A water bottle take 1 slot and it holds 1litre, so if the camelback is 3litre it would be obvious to make it use 3 slots BUT: As you drink it the whole thing deflates and it becomes smaller. So it should take 3 slots when 67-100%, 2 slots when 34-66%, and 1 for 0-33%. For this, you need to be able to right click on it and select a option to drink the next segment, so basically to drink it to be a slot smaller. This option should not be available if it is already <34%. Also if you only have 1 or 2 slots open in your inventory you should be able to fill only 1 or 2 parts.

There can also be added another realistic feature: If you decide to drink a segment, then depending on how much water was left in that segment, you will not drink from it for a certain time then. Let me explain:

If you drink a segment and it was 100% full, then for e.g. the next 20min the camelback wont drain, but your hydration will stay full as well, and when THE SEGMENT was 50% full then the time should be 20min. This should be because if you drink like 1 liter of water you not gonna drink again for a little while, you are going to be full.

So to summarize we have:

Takes 1-3 inventory slots.

Holds 3 liter.

Lasts as long as 3 water bottles would.

Automatically keeps hydration full, and drains by itself.

Option to drink segment if more than 34% full, decreasing the inventory size by 1.

What do you guys think?

Not a bad idea :)

You're better posting this at reddit though, Rocket never bothers with us here anymore and takes suggestions from Redditors :(

OMG! U just discovered a camelback game :)

Good, but a tad overcomplicated for the server to keep track, what with droping items, exchanging backpacks etc.

Could be an item that adds up to total water (like 160%) and drains without the player's intervention. That in itself is extra value for me.

I use one of these for long distance cycling excursions.

It's a good idea for an item, but should only be usable with certain backpacks that have a compartment for the hydration pack, which means it won't take up an item slot inside the bag itself.

Good idea as a whole and this part I like especially, Always thought that the same should be true for normal water bottles as long as they are in main inventory. And I definitely like the idea of having multiple options for storing water.

I'm not sure how many camelbaks you would find in Chernarus, but I do know the US military and likely many other armed forces use them - so I suppose they could be a common find in military spawns.

You mean in DayZ or real life?

In DayZ it's a bigger water container that automatically keeps you hydrated instead of you having to drink.

In the real world it's very useful for biking, running, hiking, etc. - where it's very difficult to drink out of a water bottle and keep moving.

Yea I went a bit far into detail, but I just want to show by that how it can be made to be either a simple add on or a complicated one, but i think either way it would be nice to have in game :)

If we really wanted to get fancy with water supplies we could add filters and iodine tablets instead of boiling it.

Hey also we should add cameltoes to the game. Haha.

I like this Idea. Marching though the desert landscape of Namalsk while slowly sipping your drink to avoid dehydration. This ain't to bad!

Yes he does :)

Does he lurk? Watching silently, but never pouncing?

... Untill somebody throws a flare right at him and he has to say friendly...

*begins throwing road flares.

Well technically you should be able to toss any drink in there, i mean even if you end up mixing water and pop, this is DayZ, a zombie apocalypse, luxury isn't a priory :D

Can you guys please maybe highlight this post for him plz :D

And about how common camelbacks are in real life, you should find a store who sells them at most shopping malls. I live in South Africa and all outdoor shops has them, and even some supermarkets.

Don't expect any special treatment tho.

most camping/outdoor/big supermarkets have them in uk too. Don't argue about how accessible they are in RL it's a great idea, they should of course be damaged too btw, afterall how many of us will be shot in the back in this game?

Yep, I think they should be in SA.  They shouldn't be more common than water bottles though.  It should be common enough that most players you encounter will have one.

It should almost be like camping tents, not too common but if you look for one you gonna find one. Maybe a bit more common than tents even imo.
