FrostDMG 398 Posted August 12, 2013 Not sure if anyone else mentioned this, but I think DayZ would benefit hugely from having dynamic shadows in the game - i.e shadows moving as the day passes or shadows cast by car headlights. Currently the lighting system is rather pathetic
Nihoggr 16 Posted August 12, 2013 Sorry, not entirely sure about this but I believe that the game engine already has these issues of yours covered..? Are you sure you have the correct graphical settings on your client?
applejaxc 2500 Posted August 12, 2013 Sorry, not entirely sure about this but I believe that the game engine already has these issues of yours covered..? Are you sure you have the correct graphical settings on your client? It does for dynamic shadows throughout the day. DayZ's system, ArmA 2, and ArmA 3 do not have a headlight shadow system.

enforcer1975 1111 Posted August 12, 2013 Well the lighting system is kind of "old" since it's still the OFP system but i wouldn't expect anything in the near future either since BIS is always slow on the innovation side. But then again even if adds atmosphere especially lighting does a lot for it...do we really need it right now?

FrostDMG 398 Posted August 12, 2013 I don't think there are dynamic shadows during the day guys... I haven't noticed them elongate or move (tree shadows) as time passes. They are pretty much static.

OrLoK 16188 Posted August 13, 2013 Hello there Time passes very slowly on most servers. Take some time out and have a peek, the shadows will move. But slowly. Rgds LoK
Lady Kyrah 1110 Posted August 13, 2013 (edited) I know it's all bullshit considering i actually use the sun and shadows for orientation purpose and time estimation in arma games. The only thing that was right was Applejax's comment about shadows from headlights. I'm always amazed at the amount of misinformation that goes on in gaming forums when it comes to engine capabilities.Especially when it comes to the underestimating the arma engine and overestimating the cryengine. enforcer1975 1111 Posted August 13, 2013 It's not, this type of shadows was implemented initially in arma 1.I didn't mean the day/night cycle with the shadows cast by the vegetation and buildings i meant the light from torches, fire places or vehicles. If you are in the cone you don't cast a shadow like you should, that's what i meant about it beeing "old", everyone will notice that in some places the light even penetrates entire buildings. It never changed since OFP and actually neither did the day and night cycle because it's besically still the same.
Lady Kyrah 1110 Posted August 13, 2013 Well shadows are one of the most expensive parts of rendering, even more in an open world with thousands of objects on screen (forests come to mind). It's not uncommon to stick to a single shadow casting object (sun/moon). I mean New vegas doesn't even actually has any shadow casting on the game world :p
FrostDMG 398 Posted August 13, 2013 My bad, the shadows always seemed to be cast in the same place, but my headlight/torch/flare point still stands. It would be pretty intense going through the forest at night with just the torch casting shadows everywhere...
