Cap'n (DayZ)

Your bad DayZ habits

Recommended Posts

my worst habit is the fact that i stash away everything useful whitout ever using it.

whenever i find something considered "good", i stash it away, because i dont want to die with it.

for example: "oh look a DMR, better hide it away, it is way too cool to be equipped, my double barreled shotgun is good enough"

the problem is that i never equip stuff from my dozens of stashes, since i am paranoid that someone follows me and finds the stash.

so i simply keep making new stashes, whitout ever being satisfied. i run around with the most minimalistic and basic gear.

in the end the tents either get plundered or the server disappears/gets a clean reset and everything is gone.

this is really something people may call "autistic" about me, it is really not healthy i think.

Poor you, having caught the 'loot' bug.

It generally destroys any enjoyment and turns DayZ into a version of Diablo.

I'm just curious if anyone else here has some unpleasant tendencies. I can't help but go through the backpack of anyone and everyone I meet. One time, I stole six MRE's out of a partners pack. Nice guy, I'd like to apologise. Another time, one of the first people I met held me up in Dolina. While he was going through my pack, I went through his pack, pulled out an AKM and unloaded into his face. Serves him right for taking my road flares.

All this just seems like examples of you being a more cunning and ruthless survivor than other players. Good on ya.

Reading only posts with beans in this thread because I am a bored sod. Also always checking every single vehicle spawn...

Always hiding bodies of other players even if said player does not have any sort of gear on them aside from what they start with.

Always carrying more ammo than any person would normally need in a single life time. For instance, last week I was playing with a few people and almost my entire inventory and a majority of my bag were filled with DMR mags and didn't even come close to using most of them before dying.

Double-tapping whenever sniping with a DMR or similar sniper rifles even if I know it's going to be a head shot. I like being double-sure.

Reloading over and over whenever I am running around and start to get bored. For some reason I like the sound of the reloading.

Rolling off of buildings to my death.

I have a friend who would consistently try to vault over Devil's Castle's walls because he mistook the 'V' for 'B' (binoculars)

I just remembered another bad habit I still have that's carried over from playing "twitch" shooters.  "Tactical" reloads.  I fire a burst of shots and then automatically hit reload through habit.  It's a great habit to have in twitch shooters BF/COD etc because you always have a full clip ready to go.  In Arma and DayZ etc it's not the way forward though and I've been caught out a few times in the past reloading when I should be shooting :/

This can be really hard to suppress as an instinct. I definitely emphasize empathize.

Yeah, there's a mechanic in Borderlands 2 to not reload at all with the Mechromancer... Pure torture.

I'm not sure if this is a so called bad habit, as I suppose it happens to many people. As of late I'm starting to realise I often look around me in DayZ, but don't really 'see' what's going on. More like glancing over area's, not really taking in what you see.
Case in point, yesterday I was near Stary, and in chat people called out there being some snipers around. I decided to move out through a forest, and grabbed my M14 out of my backpack in case I ran into someone on close range. Then about 30 seconds later I got shot by an AK from way up close which literally gave me a heart attack. I watched back my recording footage and the idiotic thing is, I could have seen the player WAY earlier. He was clearly in my view, but I didn't see him even though I was 'tactically' walking around with my M14. I have to admit, it was very late in the night, but I wish I could somehow pay more attention to what I'm actually looking at instead of running around like a headless chicken.

I've returned to DayZ mod after quite a few months away; forum downtime, and anticipation of the SA Alpha launch is partly to blame.

The game has changed quite a bit since I left....

I used to play as a lone wolf mountain man, and the ONLY way I survived as many days as I had in the past was by running away from people.

Now KoS seems less prevalent on the scant vanilla servers, and I find it hard to break the habit of fleeing when I encounter other players.

Constantly using ALT. It might not be a bad habit., but I look around me every 10 seconds even when running trough a field. Even if I already looked over there.

I think that's a good habbit to have, I've seen so many vids where the player never uses freelook and it drives me nuts.  The problem I have though is that when I play another game it feels really restrictive not having the option and my thumb's always pressing Alt.

I'm pretty much always holding down my freelook button. Always.

I bound one of my thumb buttons on my mouse to freelook.  Absolutely love having it there.

However I use it as a melee attack in nearly every other game I play soooo, yeah.

I end up knifing the air repeatedly the whole time I'm running around.

It is painful not being able to freelook in other games.

I'm wearing out my ALT key. I wish more FPSs had something like this. It changes, everything.

I don't use free look enough. Does that make me a heretic?

carrying way too much ammo, like, six DMR mags is way too much for one visit to elektro

Not if you're doing it correctly. :D

I have a bad habit of sprinting through the woods.  On the one hand it's good because everyone runs at the same speed so no one can sneak up behind you.  OTOH, everyone can pretty much see you and it's easy to run headlong into someone while freelooking about.  Now I go at the slower crouch-walk speed and rely on freelooking to see anyone before they see me.  Slow and low that is the tempo.
