Crafting, why not building?

in the new DayZ standalone its walk about crafting, and we can today place sandbags and stuff like that, why not simple building? Maby reinforce buildings so they fit as a camp? :)

I would love to see more sandbox stuff :)

Welcome to the forums. We have had this discussion before but...

The one big issue in regards to creating houses, camps etc is the strain it will put on the system. Can you imagine 6 months in when there are camps and modified buildings scattered everywhere - all of which require loading and saving. I am no programmer by any stretch of the imagination but all these objects would eventually cause massive lag.

Rocket has said instanced underground bases are the way forward. What they will look like is anyones guess atm.

Post Apocalypse - Humanity has suffered huge losses - the global population has shrunk to a fraction of it's peak numbers, but houses and other buildings remain. The last thing a post apocalyptic survivor is going to do is build a new house when he can have his pick of the houses already there.

I do think it would be cool to be able to secure existing buildings.

I agree - i would love nothing better than being able to run into a building and board it up, etc and make a makeshift base. I just dont know if the game could handle it.

One obvious problem would be if two players secured the same building on the same server at different times...... What happens when they log on together?

That did it in Zombie Panic Source. It would be possible in Arma2 ... I toyed a little with the idea recently in the Scripting Engine and it is no different from having trash loot lying around. The problem might be the extra load when a town loads in ... but there could be some crafty ways to overcome this.

I'll just be happy that nearly all of the building can be entered, only owed dayz for a day now and that bugs the hell out of me, finding a small town with not a single building to enter.

As well as performance issues there's also the issue of maps just becoming littered with player created structures.

Epic close combat shootout perhaps? Also, I guess the first person to secure the house should be able to board up every possible entrance so that once it's secured, nobody else can get in. the person inside will have to remove the barricades before they can leave. The barricades could disappear after a week or so if the person who put them up hasn't logged in/left the house. I wonder if this would encourage camping out in tall buildings, if so, I like it. As in a real apocalypse you're going to want a birds nest.

Well build house might be a bit of a stretch, but baracade houses would be awesome! Also about preformence, do it just like tents? 1 baracade 1 server? (As DemonGroover posted)

Again resources for barricades could be rare so that there are loads of barricades everywhere. However, wouldn't it be annoying if you were getting shot at and you run to the nearest build, say a cafe in Cherno and it turns out the door is boarded up and then you get shot in the open.

Would it be awesome? :P And also set up traps? :D Run trough the door, barbed wire in shoulderhights cuts of your head :D

Well, i dont see it as a problem when you run to a building and you need to brake the baracade? Its part of the game to be challanged with difficult obstacles

There was a time when you couldn't enter fire stations or barracks without having to disassemble 20 metres of barbed wire. It did get a bit ridiculous for a while.

Yeah, and tents in the way also :P but maby it shouldnt be so easy to do? There is always people to exploit functions, but i like the idea of baracading a hotspot and try to hold it for fun!

I dont think everything should be barricaded nor a lot of barricade should spawn in the game in the first place. Maybe establishing sth to get the opportunity to barricade doors/windows of a spesific building would solve this sorta problems ?

What if they made it so everytime you change the server, you spawn on the coast. With all your progress and gear, of course. This way you can't server-hop or sneak into a rooftop behind a player.

Would be a good option and the data would be saved on the server until restart. So until restart you spawn where you logged out then after restart everyone starts on the coast again. Kind of a "race" to the good loot places.

one good implementation against griefing would be: massive consumption of time. things like these should be relatively time consuming and/or even make much noise. That would prevent such things and you would think twice about doing such stuff.

I actually don't like the idea of barricades. One, zombies arnt really too big of an issue. The main issue is other players and the idea of staying missionary and holding base makes me feel like a giant bullseye. I like the free open roaming of the game and how open everything is.
