One thing that has me worried about the Standalone...

Recommended Posts

After watching this It just looks to me like it's become too fluid like COD or something and I don't like that. The looting looks way too fast now, I liked the idea of having to rummage around, however being able to just walk into the area with the inventory open and have it all appear is terrible. Also I find the new crosshair and the speed of how you can shoot and run around without and animation transitions to just encourage more COD like run and gunning, the animations in general just seem really poor and far too quick.

The worst thing of all though is the shooting looks weak as shit, I mean there is no kick back, no screen shake, there doesn't seem to be any reason to take aim like your character isn't out of breath from running. I loved this about Dayz based on ARMA 2, how the shooting feels so powerful, it felt like you had to take time to aim, you couldn't just run and gun. It just looks it's weak like pea shooters, again it just looks like COD shooting.

I just hope it doesn't end up like this, I want it to feel much more like ARMA, that game got the shooting right.

Edit: Also looting needs to take time, it cannot be quick because right now if you kill someone you have to make the choice of looting them and risk dying or waiting to see if a friend of theirs pops out. If you can just run up and quickly transfer everything like you can currently do in that alpha, it'll just ruin PVP in the game so much.

Your concerns are valid. However considering the engine it is running on it will still be ARMA shooting just not merely as clunky as the prior MOD. Also in the showcase you had a fresh character that had not been running for ages armed with an AK. In the mod at the moment I can carry out similar shooting styles without issue if armed with any semi auto or auto variant. Last the inventory system open and finding items I see what your saying but as with all the mod's updates in patches things can be reconfigured and made into a better system, this video is not show casing a final version.

As far as the looting goes if the loot isn't visible to you it wont show up. If you want to loot stuff under a bed you have to bend down/lie down to find it.

Having the Inventory constantly open while you move around shouldn't happen though i agree. Hopefully this changes.

The shooting doesn't appear to be too different from Arma 2 - it is using essentially the same engine. It is far from being CoD.

The crosshair is a placeholder as they need a quick and easy way to find the centre of the screen whilst developing and testing (confirmed by Rocket) and items only show in the "vicinity" part of the inventory when you are close and have a direct line of sight. For example, when standing next to a bed items under the bed won't show in that part of the inventory, you will still have to lie down and look underneath for it to show.

Regarding the movement etc I agree although it's very early days so what we see now isn't a true reflection of what we may see in a few weeks or more, it does need some discussion though and the devs do need to know many are concerned about it.

My main concern is the running and gunning element. Arma has always had lot's of issues but gunplay isn't one of them, in fact it's the ace it has up it's sleeve and why many choose it over games like COD, BF etc. It's because of the slower more considered movements that gunfights take on a whole different feel to any other shooter I've played, it becomes a very tactical game because of that as opposed to the "twitch" shooting of COD etc where the fastest finger wins, not necessarily the better tactition.

I like some of the new responsiveness being shown as there are issues that need to be addressed, I swear if I ever roll off a building again because my character decides he just has to complete that animation I'll kill myself but there's areas where the slower approach shouldn't be lost.

No matter what happens it will be the farthest thing from Call of Duty.

regarding the the gross monstrosity in the middle of the screen, im sure its a development thing and if not i hope you can turn it off.

Merge?

The last time I tried to merge 2 topics I nearly broke the internet so I'll let someone else have a go if they want :) but only if Miffy's happy about it.

I agree that the same issues I have with the animations are similar to the issues I have with the inventory system.

While the mods inventory system had some random delete item glitches, you could easily distinguish a n00b from a veteran survivor. A new player would become a static target, spending 30 seconds digging through his back pack, deciding to take one or two cans of pepsi, while someone like me could loot cycle an entire supermarket in 60 seconds. I thought inventory management, just like anything else in DayZ was a skill in it's own, which helped you feel a sense of accomplishment, because a skilled looter, never presented a sitting target for long enough to get killed, while new players would sit with their backs towards the supermarket's doors, until a bandit finally came around and removed the back of their heads.

Am I the only one concerned about the jumping zombies?

No. I'm concerned with the Zombies in general. I really hope not all Zombies are going to jump at you like that or it'll feel like I'm facing some giant spider from Eight Legged Freaks or something. Sadly, that frenzied zombie attack animation is still there too ; but who knows if that's here to stay.

I like the movement speed and fluidity, makes me feel less like someone carrying a bag of bricks. but still, I think people with more gear should go slower. But I like how the fluid movement might balance the new zombie pathfinding, which seems a great improvement even if the zombie animations are...mediocre. I think everything with the standalone right now is playable, STILL looks better than the Mod and I bet whore money it'll play better too.

Worse comes to worse, you could always jump back into playing the mods. Wouldn't the mods still continue even after StandAlone appears?

Yes, the mod will continue, but that's really out of the scope of the thread.

Movement and looting does not worry me at all in the least, I agree that insta looting should not happen but it really doesn't although it may have appeared so in the E3 vid.

Player movement and world interaction have long been the bane of OfP/Arma and Im glad the SA is looking into their own way of "reanimating" it.

I too, am fed up of taking a HUUUUGE step out of cover when i'm trying to peek or my character deciding to fully equip a weapon when i'm trying to get my binocs out for the lads.

Character control will become more fluid (i hope) but the game will never be a twitch shooter.

Don't forget, loot is turned way up in the build we saw, loot will likely be far more sparse so I have no issue with looting small amounts far more Smoother.

i have said this too many people.

part of the dayz fun is the quirkyness or things not working or glitching on a building falling off and your mate laughing at you.

once it becomes so fluid and slick half of the fun will be gone that made the mod so great to play.

things that are random or not meant to happen by choice add a extra bit of unknown. taking this unknown out makes for stale gameplay.

I am also not convinced. The jumping over the fence looks a bit awkward, I mean, the vault animation in DayZ the mod definitely looks authentic, a bit tiredly and like something someone who has been stuck in the woods for several dayz would do.

I am also a huge fan of having to stop to shoot. It adds just a fraction of a second before you pull the trigger, like your character has to take aim. It simply looks more controlled, and like the real way to handle a gun. If those things are fixed are fixed, I don't really mind the cross hair or inventory... Although I hope Rocket will still force us to sit down to open our inventory, or at least the backpack.

5.45x39 AK doesn't kick much in reality..

I'm no gun expert but I'm pretty sure it doesn't feel like a pea shooter either and in games to make guns feel powerful you have to exaggerate certain things.

I agree that Dayz (the Mod) is glitchy and the movement isn't perfect like how you get stuck on door frames and in general moving around in buildings isn't very fun. However I feel like the SA has gone too far the other way, the very fact you can now run and shoot bothers me, it just promotes the whole COD style of gameplay.

I like the inventory system the way it is, it just adds to the game because it takes time to loot which is also time you could die. So many times I've killed someone and waited to see if a friend comes, gone to loot them and died like 30 seconds into looting them. If all of a sudden I can walk up to their body, quickly drag everything into my inventory, then that ruins the experience. I feel like in real life it would take time to go through their pockets and their bags and then find space in your own.

I dunno I just feel like Dayz is turning into a game based on say the Frostbite engine, rather than one made on the ARMA engine. The fun of Dayz for me is all the little things, if you got rid of these subtle mechanics then it just becomes another bland shooter.

I mean the zombies running and jumping........ like why? What does that add other than having to make movement speed faster so you can dodge them? Zombies need to be slower if anything, maybe then the game could cope with not making them look so ridiculous.

Remember that this is just an Alpha verision.. it'll be a first verision of the game and then they will update it and im sure that in the Beta it will be much better (and in Last verision the full game it will be best)..

so what im saying is, that right now we will have to settele this verision..

For my opinion it will be the best to buy the game now when it is alpha for low price

Also, there is something with the 3D. It kind of sucks you in as a panorama reverse mirror in a distorted way the way Wolfenstein 3D did in 1991.
