puk 12 Posted May 22, 2013 Hey,Only started playing DayZ this week, loving it! But I'm getting a bit confused with the backpack and how it handles weapons.Currently the first weapon I tend to find is the Hatchet which I'm preferring because when I find a gun I suck with it! Anyway, say I have the hatchet as my primary and then spot a Lee Enfield. I pick it up and boom my hatchet is gone? I thought it would be on the floor but no its gone. is that a bug? I realize now I need to move it back to my toolbelt first but wonder why if it gets dropped it doesn't let me pick it up. Real problem when picking up a gun with no ammo and then no hatchet.Next question, say I have a Lee Enfield as my primary and I run out of ammo. If I want to switch to my Hatchet I thought I could put the gun in the backpack, but when I do this, it always vanishes. Am I doing something wrong here?
applejaxc 2500 Posted May 22, 2013 The starting backpack (which is the smallest) and low-tier backpacks with too little inventory space to hold a gun will delete whatever you try putting in. This has been addressed, but currently hatchets and crowbars still break.
Statik (DayZ) 2695 Posted May 22, 2013 Primary's (Rifles, Machine Guns, Snipers, etc) take 10 slots in a backpackSecondaries (Handguns) take 5 slots in a backpack. If you don't have enough slots, the item you place in your pack will be destroyed
puk 12 Posted May 22, 2013 Ah that makes sense then as yeah I'm on the original pack. Thx. Need to just get into my head to always put the hatchet on the toolbet first and if I run out of ammo with an early pack, just say screw it and drop the gun and bring out the hatchet. Thanks man! terrvik 2409 Posted May 22, 2013 Welcome to the jungle of frustration that is DayZ inventory managment. I have been playing for over a year (one year and seventeen days to be precise, what the hell happened?) and I'm still second guessing and worrying when moving things around. :)
herrjon 478 Posted May 22, 2013 Yep, rifles take 10 slots, the starting pack only has 8. If you're unsure how much space you have left in your pack, once you open it, it will say at the top of the list on the left, saying [backpack name] ([free slots]/[max slots]). The game won't automatically put anything in your pack, you have to do it manually, and if there isn't room, it's gone.On the hatchet problem, currently hatchets and machetes have 2 modes so to speak, a tool and a weapon. If it's in "weapon mode" it will take up your rifle spot, take up 10 slots in your pack, and will be dropped if you pick up a rifle. When weapon hatchet is on the ground, it will be standing on the blade, with the handle standing straight up, but does have a tendency to be dropped underground or disappear entirely. When you pick up a weapon hatchet, it will take your rifle slot immediately, making your drop any rifle you have equipped. In "tool mode" it takes up on of your bottom tool slots, only 1 space in your pack, and lays on the ground when dropped, as you would find it when it naturally spawns. Currently there aren't enough tools to fill up your toolbelt, so there's no real need to drop it from your toolbelt or move it in your pack, unless you're getting one for a friend. You can't have multiples of the same tool on your toolbelt, so any extra hatchets you want to carry have to be in your pack or equipped as a weapon.
Saethkept 134 Posted May 22, 2013 If you find a rubber raft, check its inventory for one of the best backpacks in the game.

herrjon 478 Posted May 22, 2013 It's not the smallest! There are Vest Pouch Backpacks that are only 4 slots! Not on vanilla servers, vest pouch is 12 there, Alice 16, Chech backpack is 24. All backpacks on vanilla servers except for the patrol pack have enough space to fit at least a rifle in them. The old pouch was 6 anyways, so you must play on a server that nerfed it even more lol
applejaxc 2500 Posted May 22, 2013 It's not the smallest! There are Vest Pouch Backpacks that are only 4 slots! Are you sure? I always take the VPB over the starting bag. I like the low-profile size. I guess it'll make a good 2 cooked meat, 2 sodas survival kit.

Kept finding a random 4-slot backpack around Cherno/Elektro. They were terrible.
HMS 115 Posted May 26, 2013 Hi Puk, What town are you in/near?The hatchet is your friend. I am still dropping weapons to hack away with the hatchet because it's quiet. Most likely in a supermarket, with any luck, you will find yourself an Alice pack or a Survival Pack, 16 slots or so.I don't know if you know this yet, but picking up a new backpack is even more insane than having items evaporate if you try putting them in a small pack.1) Approach a new backpack.2) Look at it.3) Scroll the mousewheel and notice the option "Open Alice" (for example) and click on that option and NOTHING ELSE yet.4) Your inventory screen will open up. You will see on the top left, the new, empty bag from the floor and its available slots. "16/16".5) Move your goodies INTO that pack. Do it like this first: Double click the picture of your current, starter backpack. It will now show you graphically on the top right of your screen, with the 8 slots and whatever is in them.6) Move the little arrow thingies on the left side of the screen, further toward the left. Notice the 16/16 turns to 15/16 as you move a can of food in there, or whatever.7) Once you have moved everything that you care about from your old pack into the new pack, hit ESCAPE to close your inventory screen.8) Your stuff that you moved is now in the new pack, and it is lying on the ground.9) Look at the new pack again, and mousewheel to the option that says "TAke Alice". Click.10) Your character will then don the new backpack. Your old backpack takes a wormhole to another dimension. Or sometimes it just lies on the ground.11) Run. 2a) If you are looking at the backpack on the ground, but cannot interact with it, check around it for loose items, empty cans, other junk, etc. This happens a lot whenever you really want something, especially medical supply boxes GOD DAMN IT, and are being attacked. You will need to pick up all that crap, move away, dump it all, then come back and interact with the item. It's buggy.
