Alleycat, you are absolutely on to something. You have laid out the exact parameters with which to try this out. Moonless, clouds normal, gamma jacked up, still blind as hell. You did not mention HDR - setting it higher helps, but still not on the darkest nights. I have played on the darkest DayZ nights and I can confirm. Cranking the gamma does nothing whatsoever to make it easier to see. I am a huge fan of night time playing as it is easier to avoid the walkers. I hope your suggestions are considered.

Rotten fruit exists because if you are hungry enough, risking sickness is better than the empty stomach for a while. If you are just unlucky to not be finding any edible treats, your options start to dwindle quickly, and the bad fruit gets eaten. Thanks for the tip on the charcoal tabs. I assumed that was for purifying water. Tangent: I was holding the disinfecting spray, and had an option to Drink. Not falling for that one!

I like it - though it doesn't help stick with the "I just arrived here, how did I get here and what is happening?" aspect, and it would be very disorienting, all your other points make up for it.

I have just played on 10 different servers, total fresh-spawn wipe each time. Cycle back to first of ten, on the beach. Nothing stays. New spawn every time. This is new for me as of this evening.

Assuming I can find a suitable vessel for filling with water and drinking from (canteens only? An empty plastic water bottle does not work.), once I get the water, am I risking infection if I cannot yet boil or purify it? (Dunno if boiling water is a "thing" yet - I am going by the mod. boil thing.)

There was a recent update that I can confirm absolutely: some people got prompted to update it via steam, some people didn't. Growing pains I suppose. Sit tight, it should all work out. Nobody is playing at the moment right now anyhow I am hearing. (different issue)
