No we're just waiting on them to authorize the server, then we'll have a South Africa server up and running.

oh my god what a bunch of fascists. so I cant set up my own DayZ server and PW it... thats total bull crap no offence but why?

It's hardly like you guys have the infrastructure to support this mod and you put embargo rules on so people hosting their own servers.... WTF!!!

The more I investigate this mod the more it ticks me off...

The reasons are pretty simple:

People can password their server and corrupt the database, add their own weapons, etc... that have affect on other servers.

Every server is taking up capacity that could be provided to others. Even a passworded (but empty) server is taking up performance.

Passworded servers prevent DayZ staff from going onto the server to check that it is still functioning.

DayZ was made as a project for EVERYONE not for the private enjoyment of others on private servers.

I have found PW servers already and I have been kicked off servers today... well kicked be for I could even join....

I would love to set up my own server but I dont want to have to w8 2 hours before I can join it... I would love to leave it un-passworded but not having the ability to free up slots that bull shit...

The technical reasons are understandable, but what myself and others have been trying to say is that a large portion of the community does indeed want some degree of "private enjoyment" and the control that comes with it. It would add a lot to the experience.

Some (like me) would like passworded servers where we can keep the idiots and deathmatchers out. A roleplay server, for instance, will NEVER work without some kind of filtering process.

Others, mainly clanners, would like their own servers where they are all guaranteed access and their gear is persistent. I would say that the vast majority will not put their money into servers for long (if at all) if they have to wait in line for spots like the common rabble.

You've created something awesome here, and everyone (myself included) has been having a blast thanks to you. I get that it's in alpha and there are technical hurdles. I'm just saying that in the long run it's probably in the mod's best interests if there is a greater degree of flexibility.

Whats wrong with people who think passworded servers is a good idea?

Passworded servers give people playing there advantages against players on other servers. Its like buying gear pretty much, you can have your own gear server where you farm gear and then go shoot people on other servers, when you die you just pop back in on your own server and take a new set of pro gear from your storage and then go back shooting people on other servers.

Private servers would kill the game as long as the database is the same for all servers. You guys who think the restrictions will kill the game, get real, private servers and unfair advantages to those with their own servers would kill the game and thats how it is. At least I know I wouldnt play if people could buy an advantage.

I personally couldn't care less if my gear is transferable to other servers or not. I'd be perfectly happy with having a separate character on the central database, and my own character in my own independent server off the main DB.

Plenty of other missions people can host if they need passwords. I cannt see segregation helping the DayZ experiment

As of right now passworded are not allowed - DayZ is a persistent multiplayer experience. As Rocket stated

People can password their server and corrupt the database' date=' add their own weapons, etc... that have affect on other servers.

Every server is taking up capacity that could be provided to others. Even a passworded (but empty) server is taking up performance.

The mod is still in alpha and requires a lot of testing before anyone will be allowed to make a specific type of server (roleplaying, clan based, bandit free, whatever). As of right now though, no server will ever be passworded or locked unless there is a damn good reason as to why. There will not be any specific type of server (roleplaying, etc) because DayZ is still in alpha and the mod's core mechanics, networking, etc have to be tested by us. We are the testers, people need to realize that for right now since the mod is in alpha that we have no choice but to do what we're here for. Make suggestions, report bugs and play the game.

Separating players to satisfy your niche is not how DayZ will run. Just because some of you want to run a roleplaying server, where you take 30 minutes to shoot someone because you want to act out being a bandit - is not going to be allowed. Kicking people because you want a bandit free server, is not allowed. You're trying to define the game to meet your wants and needs, when you don't even realize that it's not what the developers want or need you to do.

I'm going to stress it again, DayZ is in alpha. We break shit, they fix it. If any server admin tries to narrow down their community anymore that what DayZ is supposed to be (anyone plays, anyone can be a bandit, everyone is trying to survive, no one is spending 30 minutes describing to other players why they are going to shoot another player [roleplaying]) will have your server blacklisted and that's that.

No passworded servers.

No locked servers.

No specific needs servers (roleplaying, bandit free, etc).

No kicking people to let your clan buddies come in.

It's that simple. We're supposed to be testing the mod, so let us test the mod. So get in game, on the forums and find bugs, write suggestions, etc.

EDIT: Also, bandit free servers? Seriously? You're defeating the entire purpose of the game. SURVIVAL. If you kick/ban bandits then you shouldn't be allowed to run a server. I'm not a bandit, but I love them because they add to the experience. It makes things even more challenging. If you honestly don't like bandits, go make your own zombie mod/game.

Hi, I'm interested in hosting a server and have read the rules regarding the functionality of the server in use with the mod.

I emailed the dev team in order to receive a instance number and have not been emailed back. Is there something else not covered in the server setup process required to get approval or is it because you are overwhelmed with server setup requests?

Also following this link http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2704259

I need to download a generated mission. The link here is broken. Will the email i receive with the instance number also have a link or be given the generated mission file?

Thanks in advance.

I'd love to know where you'd find an ARMA2 server for $50. Unless its like 10-20 slots

You can rent an NFO 40-man Arma2 server for $50 a month. 50-man is $60 I believe.

And thanks for your responses Matt and Rocket. Once you guys loosen the rules a little, I'll be happy to set up a public server.

First of all - who are you to make these pronouncements? You're saying that you're just another tester - so where do you derive the authority to say what kind of servers there will or will not be, or to tell others what they can or cannot do?

There are already two designated roleplaying servers, by the way. US11/12. I stand by my prediction: it will not work without a filtering process. They'll be overrun with deathmatching the same as every other server and the admins will be constantly swarmed with he said/she said.

The other issue that you are thoughtlessly overlooking is money. The lowest number I am seeing to host a reliable server is $50/month. That's more than most people pay for internet service - and I'm sure the average 50-slot server costs far more than that. So no, it isn't the least bit unreasonable for people to expect that their money guarantee them a spot on their own server. Hell, if I want it password protected to keep idiots out, that's nobody's business but mine. I'm paying for it. There is a legitimate case to be made based on the technical reasons rocket gave, but that's it. With that taken out of the equation, people should be able to do what they want with their own servers.

You're wrong, because when you pay to host a server you're paying to help test DayZ. You're paying so that more people can have the opportunity to play the mod. You're paying to be able to play, but not to have your own rules.

DayZ has a premise that everyone should be following; Survive, by any means necessary. There will always be bandits in any server, you cannot control that because then you're just going to kill off half of the community. As a server admin for other games, if you start doing things that isolates your community.. you will never grow, people will get bored and you will find your community dying.

You're going to have people who will join the server hoping to just play the game. They're going to kill a player because they are one of those people who shoot anything moving on sight. They are going to be kicked/banned and that will make them disgruntled. The end result that if this happens enough those people will simply stop playing.

Bandit free servers in DayZ? No. I don't think we need those. I don't think anyone should even consider trying to regulate it, because you're just going to end up taking away from the experience at that point. The point of DayZ is to survive. It is to fight zombies and to have this inability to trust anyone because of your previous experience with other players. It makes you want to work as a team with friends who will group with you on the same server.

I'm not a moderator. I'm not an admin. I am a player who says "No. I don't want that. I don't want to see that in this game. I can't make you NOT do it, but I do have the right to say my peace and walk away."

That's some pretty backwards reasoning you've got there. It's not consistent, either - you aren't paying to have the ability to play, since server owners can and regularly do end up fighting for slots on their own servers.

If you think that's not going to turn off a significant number of clanners or others who have money to put towards servers, you're sadly mistaken.

DayZ has a premise that everyone should be following; Survive, by any means necessary. There will always be bandits in any server, you cannot control that because then you're just going to kill off half of the community.

The last sentence shoots itself in the foot. If bandits are half of the community, then that's half of the potential money pool for servers. They are always going to have a place to play.

Besides, you're building a strawman. The majority of complaints re these rules have nothing to do with bandits, it's the fact that server owners can't even guarantee themselves access to their own machines. They're not happy about it and I don't blame them.

You're going to have people who will join the server hoping to just play the game. They're going to kill a player because they are one of those people who shoot anything moving on sight. They are going to be kicked/banned and that will make them disgruntled. The end result that if this happens enough those people will simply stop playing.

Here you contradict yourself again - you keep talking about "survival." How is "shoot anything moving" a smart survival strategy? You are guaranteed to get yourself killed eventually using this approach. Survival means picking your battles very carefully.

What you are describing is a deathmatcher, not a bandit focused on survival. I couldn't care less if those people stopped playing as they add nothing to the "survival" experience - not that it matters, as the majority of servers will always be available to them.

Bandit free servers in DayZ? No. I don't think we need those. I don't think anyone should even consider trying to regulate it, because you're just going to end up taking away from the experience at that point.

That's your opinion.

If the experience I want is a 1-man server that I run and NOBODY ELSE is allowed to play in - where I play Will Smith from I Am Legend - what's the problem?

It's certainly a hell of a lot closer to the "point" of DayZ - i.e. survival - than what most "bandits" do currently, which is run around like it's a Call of Duty FFA, hoping to bag two or three other survivors before they get shot, then respawning and doing it over again.

If you're going to take exception to other people's playstyles, you should probably start with them.

just playing devils advocate, but it is not our IP that we are playing with. if i hop onto jnwp's clan/guild site and start up with racial/sexual/FSM epitaphs would i not be banned instantly? why? it's the interwebs! i should be able to do what i want!

till you run into something you don't agree with.at that point and time, you "own" it and you can do anything you want. i'll be honest, i definitely agree with your qualms, jnwp. but with a game like this? how do you do it without having "the hoard" denegrate the whole experience? how do you prevent a group from locking down a server and grabbing everything?

simple answer, deny all. and i agree with the dev's. it's what we are working with, as of now. you have a choice. either spend your money and run a server or not.

c/n: it ain't our game... we have no say. and that's good.
