Moddability

Recommended Posts

PLEASE NOTE: This is a suggestion for the upcoming DayZ standalone game in development.

I'd like to see DayZ provide more modding options, as well as allow players to make slight changes to their installed DayZ. For example, harmless changes that won't keep you from playing on retail servers such as texture packs or font packs (for whatever reason you'd want to change a font lol).

Additionally, I think it'd be nice if there was a separate single player option. By separate, I mean give players the option to play a single player character (cannot be loaded in multiplayer) and the option to play a multiplayer character (standard DayZ method of playing online; cannot be played on single player). If this were to be added, it'd allow a lot more moddability for the single player portion. I think that eventually, this could lead to some really good mods being made for single player and then possibly being approved/implemented by the actual developers on retail servers.

TLDR: It's two god damn paragraphs, but basically I'm saying I'd like there to be an OPTION to play offline in a moddable single-player mode on a single-player mode only character.

This has been suggested before and some think it may be implemented down the line at some point but I would not expect this at release.

As it exists now, I don't see the point in playing DayZ offline, except for map familiarization or making videos. Maybe if the Standalone adds some sort of campaign mode that would make sense.

For example, harmless changes that won't keep you from playing on retail servers such as texture packs or font packs (for whatever reason you'd want to change a font lol).

Have to be careful with that when it comes to playing online, people could modify their ground and vegetation or player textures to spot other players more easily, etc.

The SA doesn't need mods...maybe some sound and effects mods but no mods that allow the player to change the surroundings to his/her advantage.

Rocket actually stated that if he includes this, he would only include it at a later date, after everything upon the release of the standalone is working well and with a low flow of errors.

Sound mods would be stupid in my opinion as you would be able to mod it so its easier to hear where the shots are fired from and which weapon.

I would hate to see client-side mods like the ones people are referring to. That just sounds like x-ray mods, turning night to day mods, and all sorts of overpowered stuff that this game absolutely doesn't need.

Server-side mods, like the ones we see now on private hives, would be possibly okay. If a server admin wants to put a jet spawn in his server, for example, or tweak the starting equipment, the devs will probably let that happen. But client-side, noooo. We don't need those.

Why not? Who says there won't be a community that wants to change aspects of the game, to say, allow players to get the zombie virus? There's always going to be a niche community that wants to play things differently. Mods could end up improving the standalone for everyone, just look at ACE/ACRE for ArmA II.

Which I would define as "server-side" mods. As long as the mod is universal to every player on the servver, it's okay with me. But I feel like the spirit of the OP was client-sides, as in "weapons put off a color-coded glow so you can see them from fifty yards off" or "make chopper noises audible at double the normal distance".
