Sliv 1 Posted February 14, 2013 (edited) Hey everybody. Today I decided to take a leap of faith and buy Arma 2 for the DayZ mod which looks terrific. So far I've been playing it for about three hours.First I started near a shore of some sorts. After I found out how to switch to third person camera (first person makes me dizzy because of the shaking camera) I walked ten meters and then got chased by a zombie. Gotta turn around and run away! Wait, what? I can't turn? What is this sorcery? Needless to say, I died. Seemingly, pressing any combination of W, D or A doesn't make you turn in any way. Ultimately I found a way to solve this by assigning the turn left and right to my Q and E buttons so now I can navigate the map. Is this normal? Isn't there supposed to be a way to turn your character using the default key bindings? After respawning and being able to move around the world, I decided to explore for a bit. I reached a small open building which looked a bit like a small shop. Sneaking in like a boss, dodging the menacing looking zombie just outside, I find a menacing looking fire axe right on the ground. Yes, my first weapon, I think by myself. But wait. I can't pick it up I just opened the door so my interact button is fine, and I tried it from many different angles and moving over it a thousand times, but I simply can't pick the item up. Are you not supposed to pick up an axe lying on the ground in a building? What the heck is going onWell okay, maybe I can't pick up all items, I think. Lets just visit another building and see if we can find anything there instead. I walk to some buildings, sneak past the zombies and arrive at the door. The door won't open. There's no icon or whatsoever, while the door at the shop I just visited opened pretty fine. I tour at least ten buildings and none of their doors will open. Hell, I even find a building where the door is slightly open and I still can't do anything with it. What is this? Are you not supposed to be able to open most of the buildings in this game? Even when they appear slightly open? If so, what's the whole point of those buildings? At some point I walk past a large voltage towers (not sure what they're called in English) so I decide to climb the ladder to get a view of my surroundings. I can interact with the first pair of stairs, no problem. There's no problem going up the second stairs either. But wait, then suddenly the interact symbol disappears and I'm stuck at the second floor. It took me about two minutes until I received the user icon to go up the stairs to the third floor, and then it took me another two minutes to get the icon again to descend. Is this normal? After scouring the countryside for at least an hour, dodging a human player with a pistol trying to kill me and looking for supplies and a weapon myself, finally I find a barn with an already open door. It's infested with zombies, but for some reason I manage to sneak up the ladder undetected and I find some ammo. I have no gun yet, but well at least it's a good find. Going up the other ladder and bingo! There's a double barreled shotgun with two shells. It's not much as far as ammo goes, but it's a start. But wait, I can't pick it up. Why can't I pick it up? After trying multiple different angles, I finally manage to pick up the single gun.Why is it so hard to pick up items in this game? Running out, I get chased down by a zombie and I try to shoot it. I try to click my right mouse button to aim down the sight but it doesn't seem to do anything so I run away instead. When I'm finally safe, I try aiming again. It doesn't work. Yet I saw a video of the mod where a person was looking down his sights before entering the building. Why can't I? I just used my right mouse button, should I enable it somehow? I think I read somewhere that you can't aim down the sight when you are injured and you need painkillers. Is that maybe it? Why can't I aim down my sights?Ultimately, I get ambushed by a few zombies and I get downed (or something). Then suddenly I can aim down my sight and fire a few shots, but the option disappears again pretty quickly. After a few seconds, a hourglass-like icon appears and then I'm dead. What just happened to me?Honestly, I really want to like this game but I'm having a hard time even grasping the controls and some things don't make sense to me at all. Also I couldn't find any food or water and I can't enter any buildings. I've gotten kinda frustrated. Can anybody help me? Also, I was on a recruit server. I specifically sought one out since I was new.Cheers,Sliv Edited February 14, 2013 by Sliv
gamerman001 182 Posted February 14, 2013 Um...use your mouse to turn and look around and use the scroll button to pick. Things up... If you're playing on a laptop you're pretty fucked sad to say.
gamerman001 182 Posted February 14, 2013 Also I helps out greatly to play the arma 2 tutorials.
Sliv 1 Posted February 14, 2013 Luckily, I'm not playing on a laptop. Also, I used my mouse to look around but my character would still keep running in the same direction.
taco241 393 Posted February 14, 2013 Try this. It's old but still accurate I think.I put it together sometime last summer.

So perhaps that was stuck on and the reason you could not turn.Items are easy to pick up you just need to look at them and scroll your mouse wheel. Or press G if the icon comes up.A lot of buildings aren't enterable (Will be fixed in the Standalone) a tip is if you can see the interior of the building through the windows you can enter them.Ladders can be hard to "use sometimes" especially once you are on a roof etc. You just need to get close to where it is and move your mouse around until you find it.You should be able to look down your sites by pressing thr right mouse button. If this doesn't work try switching weapons to fix the issue. Please note this is still an alpha. Edited February 14, 2013 by Hartraft

Are you not supposed to be able to open most of the buildings in this game? Even when they appear slightly open? If so, what's the whole point of those buildings?Sadly, yes. some buildings are there solely for decoration, or losing zombies by running in a circle like a drug dealer with a cop. Iunno the full reason. Blame dinkleburg. At some point I walk past a large voltage towers (not sure what they're called in English) so I decide to climb the ladder to get a view of my surroundings. I guess./..After scouring the countryside for at least an hour, dodging a human player with a pistol trying to kill me and looking for supplies and a weapon myself, finally I find a barn with an already open door. Then suddenly I can aim down my sight and fire a few shots, but the option disappears again pretty quickly. After a few seconds, a hourglass-like icon appears and then I'm dead. What just happened to me?What happened: firstly, the zombies broke your leg. No walking for you, until you get a needle of morphine and man up, ya pussie. Second, don't shoot zombies with a gun like the DB shotgun. too loud. Run around in the woods to lose them. Next, when the icon appeared, you were knocked unconcious. bloodloss, shock, any factor. Once you were unconcious, they feasted upon your balls. GG.Happened to me in my newbie age, too. Research the game on googtube, play with a buddy etc etc. GL out there-An Aquatic Land Walrus Edited February 14, 2013 by Arcralf

If you regain consciousness and still have blood, you will still be alive. But if you lose all your blood while being unconscious you die.-You could not find water or food? I reccommend going to a large city such as Elektro or Cherno to get food. Some servers have loot problems and you may run in to trouble finding items such as food/water. Make sure you have enough resources so you can head up North.-When you cannot aim down your sights, drop the weapon and pick it back up. Well, that works for me. Good luck! dallas 5195 Posted February 14, 2013 (edited) While pressing all your keys, you probably pressed the alt key twice.Alt = freelook, turning your head, rather than your body.2xalt = freelook toggle. So you should unbind the Q/E turning, because you need to bind Q/E to lean left/right and to evasive roll left/right.As for ladders sometimes turning your back towards them, makes it easier to climb down.Right mouse button does a lot of things:-Hold it to zoom in, works both in third person, first person, with iron sights and some rifle scoped.-Hold also activates hold breath, which makes your aim steady for a short moment, but makes your hand shake after a few seconds.-Click switches the view to iron sights or rifle scopes. Sliv 1 Posted February 14, 2013 Thanks guys. Especially the double alt tap is probably what was bugging me with the controls. I think I'll just do the Arma 2 tutorial to get a feel for the controls and then try to do DayZ again. Thanks!
DazTroyer 227 Posted February 14, 2013 Luckily, I'm not playing on a laptop. Also, I used my mouse to look around but my character would still keep running in the same direction.Sounds to me like you've managed to double tap "free look", I've moved mine to my mouse and I can't remember what the default key binding is. You quickly get to know what buildings you can enter or not, some items are just glitch to pick up. Sometimes you have to pick up all the crap on the same spot as the one you want. It's all just DayZ, it gets better, begins to make sense, then your backpack swallows your AS50 and it's gone all Pete Tong again. Enjoy :)

herrjon 478 Posted February 14, 2013 Hello,By the looks of it most of your questions got answered, I'll just add on.I highly recommend resetting your bindings for Q and E. They allow you to lean and roll (while prone ofc) which becomes very useful when going through high pop areas and need to safely look around corners and return fire without exposing yourself too much. For picking up the the hatchet, it doesn't have a radius you can pick it up, it's based off the model of the axe. Do your best to get your cross hairs right over and scroll, there should be a take hatchet option. If not, try holding right mouse button to zoom in, usually helps. Remember though, when you do find that hatchet, if you don't have a rifle already, do the remove from toolbelt option in the gear, and don't forget to reload it :DI tend to avoid ladders when I can, usually ends up badly, but there's some quirks with them I'm familiar with. I seem to have the best luck getting the option not when I'm looking directly at it, but if I stand near it and look 90 degrees either left or right of it. Start there and just move around your crosshair until you see the option. Sounds silly, but that's just how it is. Some ladders on other maps are just straight up bugged, but last I remember all the Chenarus ones work.
