  1. Hey guys. While I've been enjoying DayZ on my own so far, I think it will be much better if I play it with somebody else (or multiple people). So that's why I'm looking for somebody to play with. To give you an indication of how new I am: I played it for one day approximately, just got down a controls somewhat and I still have no idea where I can find stuff and I haven't shot a single zombie yet because I'm not quite sure how to aim. My most precious find has so far been a Double Barreled Shotgun. I mostly roam the countyside because I'm still too scared and ill-equipped to enter the big cities (And I don't have a clue where they are, that doesn't help either :P ) but maybe if we are with more people and we all have a pistol or something we could go try to loot some of the city buildings. The things that I would prefer in a person: - Being a newbie, just like me. It might be okay to have one somewhat experienced person in the group but I think it's the nicest if we are all clueless and find out things by ourselves. That's just how I like to play the game. - Willing to play on servers with other people on them with PvP ON. Yes, I will probably die every time when I encounter somebody, but I love the thrill of being able to encounter people who might kill me. The first hour I played I was chased by somebody with a pistol and it was awesome (lol). However, I'm not looking to actively kill people myself so hadn't planned on teaming up with bandits. Rather survivors and people who shoot bandits when they're around. - Playing at the same hours as me. I'm from the Netherlands (GMT+1) and I play mostly during the late afternoons and into the late evenings. - Fluency in either English or Dutch. I speak both, and I am okay with people speaking either. Your English can be just a little broken, but if I'm going to survive with you for days then I'd like somebody who I can talk well with and I don't really want a language barrier for that. Hopefully there's somebody who would like to play sometime. Just add me on Steam: Slivv
  2. Do you think this server would be suitable for a new player? Veteran settings and the like? It sounds inviting but I don't wanna spend my time dead most of the time because I get hunted by organized groups. Edit: Tried to ask for whitelist on the website but unable to because the server host seems to be doing some server maintenance. I'll come back later.

    Server Progress?

Ahem, what exactly is public and private hive? Is that like the difference between official and unofficial servers? Also, how do I tell the difference when I select a server?
  4. Hi guys. So today I had a blast roaming the countryside and exploring some ruins and buildings. While I didn't find many interesting things I did like the slight progress I was making. However, at some point, the server automatically shut down and I wasn't able to find it again. (I forgot to write down the information on the server) When I tried joining a different server, it seemed like my progress was lost. Is your progress tied to the server you play on? Is there any way to transfer your progress to another server? If not, is it possible to progress in two different servers simultaneously? And what do these server restarts actually do? Does it respawn all the lootstuffs on the map? When I browse through the servers I see some servers which say 'Playing' while others say 'Creating'. What exactly is the difference between these? And how long does it generally take for a server to be back up after the restart? Also, since I've had some trouble finding a proper server (the one I was on was perfect but I couldn't find it again :( ) maybe anyone would have some suggestions for the GMT+1 timezone? I'd very much like a server that's decently populated so that I at least feel like I have to be careful to not fall to strangers but which is at the same time very newbie-friendly (recruit-difficulty) because I have absolutely no clue about most things of the game and would like to explore without getting hunted by all military-equipped veterans. Thanks for your help and maybe until ingame. Cheers, Sliv
  5. Thanks guys. Especially the double alt tap is probably what was bugging me with the controls. I think I'll just do the Arma 2 tutorial to get a feel for the controls and then try to do DayZ again. Thanks!
  6. Luckily, I'm not playing on a laptop. Also, I used my mouse to look around but my character would still keep running in the same direction.
  7. Hey everybody. Today I decided to take a leap of faith and buy Arma 2 for the DayZ mod which looks terrific. So far I've been playing it for about three hours. First I started near a shore of some sorts. After I found out how to switch to third person camera (first person makes me dizzy because of the shaking camera) I walked ten meters and then got chased by a zombie. Gotta turn around and run away! Wait, what? I can't turn? What is this sorcery? Needless to say, I died. Seemingly, pressing any combination of W, D or A doesn't make you turn in any way. Ultimately I found a way to solve this by assigning the turn left and right to my Q and E buttons so now I can navigate the map. Is this normal? Isn't there supposed to be a way to turn your character using the default key bindings? After respawning and being able to move around the world, I decided to explore for a bit. I reached a small open building which looked a bit like a small shop. Sneaking in like a boss, dodging the menacing looking zombie just outside, I find a menacing looking fire axe right on the ground. Yes, my first weapon, I think by myself. But wait. I can't pick it up I just opened the door so my interact button is fine, and I tried it from many different angles and moving over it a thousand times, but I simply can't pick the item up. Are you not supposed to pick up an axe lying on the ground in a building? What the heck is going on Well okay, maybe I can't pick up all items, I think. Lets just visit another building and see if we can find anything there instead. I walk to some buildings, sneak past the zombies and arrive at the door. The door won't open. There's no icon or whatsoever, while the door at the shop I just visited opened pretty fine. I tour at least ten buildings and none of their doors will open. Hell, I even find a building where the door is slightly open and I still can't do anything with it. What is this? Are you not supposed to be able to open most of the buildings in this game? Even when they appear slightly open? If so, what's the whole point of those buildings? At some point I walk past a large voltage towers (not sure what they're called in English) so I decide to climb the ladder to get a view of my surroundings. I can interact with the first pair of stairs, no problem. There's no problem going up the second stairs either. But wait, then suddenly the interact symbol disappears and I'm stuck at the second floor. It took me about two minutes until I received the user icon to go up the stairs to the third floor, and then it took me another two minutes to get the icon again to descend. Is this normal? After scouring the countryside for at least an hour, dodging a human player with a pistol trying to kill me and looking for supplies and a weapon myself, finally I find a barn with an already open door. It's infested with zombies, but for some reason I manage to sneak up the ladder undetected and I find some ammo. I have no gun yet, but well at least it's a good find. Going up the other ladder and bingo! There's a double barreled shotgun with two shells. It's not much as far as ammo goes, but it's a start. But wait, I can't pick it up. Why can't I pick it up? After trying multiple different angles, I finally manage to pick up the single gun.Why is it so hard to pick up items in this game? Running out, I get chased down by a zombie and I try to shoot it. I try to click my right mouse button to aim down the sight but it doesn't seem to do anything so I run away instead. When I'm finally safe, I try aiming again. It doesn't work. Yet I saw a video of the mod where a person was looking down his sights before entering the building. Why can't I? I just used my right mouse button, should I enable it somehow? I think I read somewhere that you can't aim down the sight when you are injured and you need painkillers. Is that maybe it? Why can't I aim down my sights? Ultimately, I get ambushed by a few zombies and I get downed (or something). Then suddenly I can aim down my sight and fire a few shots, but the option disappears again pretty quickly. After a few seconds, a hourglass-like icon appears and then I'm dead. What just happened to me? Honestly, I really want to like this game but I'm having a hard time even grasping the controls and some things don't make sense to me at all. Also I couldn't find any food or water and I can't enter any buildings. I've gotten kinda frustrated. Can anybody help me? Also, I was on a recruit server. I specifically sought one out since I was new. Cheers, Sliv
