Knifing freshies

I would love to see melee options in the SA - like you can sneak up behind a sniper and knife them in the face kind of thing - have a one hit kill % chance of 50% and watch the freshie zerg rush.

I don't know about knives... seeing as even the most powerful handgun takes more than a full magazine to kill someone, I don't see a knife being more powerful.

You could already do this with a hatchet, but yeah, some more mellee weapons would be nice.

I think one of the major drawbacks of DayZ at this time is the lack of melee combat. If you do not have a gun or a hatchet you have absolutely no way of defending yourself whatsoever which is rather unrealistic. Being able to use your fists and do sneak attacks on individuals from behind or simply having a massive fist fight to the death would be pretty epic. Using that hunting knife for a quick and silent kill would be a great addition aswell; got a sniper on that rooftop? Sneak up behind that fool and slit his throat silently like nothing ever happened! No zombie aggros, no players hearing gunshots, no muzzleflash, no smoke, no fuss. Drag the body into the brush (please add "drag body" in standalone) and carry on with your group to loot the town.

Also, being able to knock someone out with your fists or the butt of a hatchet, gun or blunt object would be a great way to subdue someone without killing them.

Be pretty stupid to ignore options just because cod has them,

Cod has guns, that mean dayz should take guns out? No, would be stupid too :/

Even bad games have good ideas and implementations

Don't overestimate edged weapons such as knives and daggers, only in Hollywood is it possible to one hit instakill with a knife even if you clearly see it's only a flesh wound.

And even if you get the drop on a gun user and he doesn't die from the initial attack there is a big chance you will die before him. And then there is the 3P issue which makes a sneak attack practically impossible...

I think you missed the point--I believe that commentator was specifically calling out CoD's melee-movement (notably, THE LUNGEEEEEEEEE, as opposed to the child's logic of WELL COD HAS KNIVES SO THAT'S A NONSTARTER) that makes using a knife a serious competitor in a game built around using guns. Simply dismissing it as you did was a bit callous.

The commentators post was "Pleaaase no "COD" Melees, you have a gun, use it -_- "

I dont see a reference to Movement in that post tbh, and i do see a comment "you have a gun, use it"

So i assumed the reference to a gun meant she/he was meaning the weapon used, so that entails a Weapon :)

And tbh in Dayz if someone can sneak up and stab you in the back (unless a friend who is close) you have to be pretty dumb or have your sound turned down maybe lol

So Dayz mellees aka cod ftw imo :P, cos i dont think it would play the same way, cos Dayz has many more sounds and way better realistic gameplay than cod

The problem with knives is that they are usually insta-kills in a game, which is fine for arcade shooters but would bug the hell out of me in a simulator like ArmA or the standalone.

I can ASSURE you that you're not going to be able to easily and quickly kill someone with a knife unless you're extremely well trained or very lucky.

Have you seen the way hogs thrash and squeal when hunters stick them with huge 12-inch blades? And that's with the help of several dogs pinning the hog down.

You're not going to be able to go full ninja and instantly take out enemies in real life. Yes, you can kill someone with a knife. No, it's probably not going to be fast or silent, and if they hear you sneaking up you may as well forget about dispatching them in any sort of timely manner.

You have to remember the mod is based on Arma 2 and melee weapons are not part of the Arma game. The hatchet is a glorified, re-modelled, short range gun (note having to reload). Fighting with fists and knives isn't something the engine can do that i am aware of.

Hopefully since the DayZ SA engine had been rewritten melee weapons are treated differently.

I can't remember if it was Mount and Blade that he referenced, but Rocket has brought up melee mechanics a couple of times, and I like the sound of it.

We have to get used to the idea of simple "click to hit" mechanics for the mean time, because any sort of advanced implementation wil take a LOOOOOOOOONG time.

I'd support any kind of advanced control (by that I mean, you have a LOT of control over the action) because of the importance of player's abilities rather than 50% insta-kill chance.

Putting someone down quickly shouldn't be out of the question, but it should be a case of either a VERY good aim, or a complete fluke.

Also, if we ever get a "throw whatever you're holding" action, bringing a knife to a gunfight might not be entirely stupid.

In any case, it's probably better than nothing.

One-click-one-hit kills aren't a good idea. It should all be based on where you aim with the knife and if you hit the area you are aiming for. This would make killing a moving target instantly very hard. But, if you sneak up behind a sniper, aim for his head and stab, then sure, he should die. But, if you just lazily stab his back, you're going to have a bad time.

maybe having the knife as a secondary just like the hatchet right now? less damage, but a headshot can kill anything with one hit at all times

i'd see no problem in that

knocking people out like in Takistan Life Revolution Mod would be cool, too

first knock them out, then slit their throat, viola! we have a melee combat system

also ffs make the guns actual guns, i dont think people could take 8 shots even from a makarov like the champs from dayz can, damn you arma weapons update!

Knives definitely need to be included in the game. Large carving knives are readily available IRL and would be an obvious choice to arm yourself with if a firearm isn't available.

The point about knives is that while they are unlikely to instakill they are exceptionally easy to handle and difficult to defend against. A person could stab you several times in a few seconds, causing mortal wounds and without very specialised training there is little you can do to defend yourself. Knives should take between 5 and 10 quick stabs to kill another player, this will ensure that if you are agile enough you can take them out but if they return fire you're toast. Knives should be of very limited use against Zeds. We can be pretty sure that the infected don't react to pain in the same way as people and won't flinch or avoid damage. If you're close enough to stab a zombie it's close enough to chew your arm off.

I think that's fair. Sneak up behind someone, aim, and click your mouse as fast as possible before they can react. If they see you you probably wouldn't be able to easily kill them.

I remember what the mod is based off of. I also dare to dream about a better mod and a better standalone. I was however pointing more towards the standalone with my suggestions because at this time the mod has so many issues this should not even be thought of before those issues are addressed.

But bringing a knife to a gunfight is a really stupid idea... :lol: You still have a better chance if your weapon is bigger or heavier than a knife because it can be used as a club, even a pistol.

Well let me clarify things then.

You probably heard the saying "do not bring a knife to a gun fight". There is a reason why in homicides involving knives, "multiple stab wounds" usually appears in the news title.
