Is it possible to trust?

Recommended Posts

I've been playing Dayz for around a week now, and i'm more or less loving it.

Easily the best mod I have ever played.

The only really big issue I have with Dayz is with the pvp.

Don't get me wrong, the tension and suspense you get when you see another player/players is crazy. Are they going to shoot me? Should I shoot them? Should I try and make a run for it?

The problem comes when I want to make allies.

I've had to open fire on players that have tried killing me, and I feel bad for the 5 people that I had to kill, even though they may have been out to kill me. And this is the issue. Where they trying to kill me because they thought I might kill them?

Currently my character is held up with 4500 blood in a pub in electro, and I badly need a blood trans. I even went as far as to ask players to help me, but was met with people telling me I had painted a target on my head. Would it not be a good idea to implement some mechanic to the game to show that you are friendly? I currently feel like I can't trust another player in the game, apart from the two friends I play with.

I understand this is part of the game, but I feel like I will eventually become an outlaw. I would really like to show people that I want to help, but how can they trust me?

After an entire day of playing I have still never found a gun. Even being visibly unarmed I have never come across another player who did not kill me.

They can be close enough to clearly see I have no weapon but they kill me anyway. I suspect the near total lack of loot recently has made people desperate.

One day I hope to find a gun so I can defend myself but suspect I will lose interest long before that.

The reason I am so low on blood at the moment was because of this reason. I got killed and started again, made a mad dash into electro and managed to find an AK with some ammo, not before getting beat on pretty bad. And that's where I am now. Low ammo and no blood. I need someone else to help me out, but what's to stop them from blowing my brains out for my loot?

I'm sorry to the american I killed today. Pretty sure you were unarmed but after having already been killed twice, by other players in that hour. I just killed you. I feel like shit my dude. Hope you see this.

Lack of loot? I find weapons all over the map. Crossbows/winchesters/Lee enfields can be found at barns.

E: And why do you people always go to electro/cherno? Electro and cherno are warzones. No wonder you people are getting killed every 5 minutes.

Avoid, or try to communicate in direct communication channel rather than kill. There is still too much kill-on-sight going on, and I guess most are doing it because they fear the other one will do it.

It IS possible to find people that won't try to kill you on site.

I've been plesantly surprised over the last few days, my friend and I have been looting around Cherno in the dark where we met up with a couple of other players who needed a blood transfusion. We teamed up with them for a bit but got split up and disbanded after a suprise zombie attack.

Then the next morning we were looting Cherno again during the night and we met up with another player who ended up accompanying us to an airfield and raiding with us.

I'm kinda schocked that every player that we've seen over the last few days hasn't tried to murder us. (The one person we didn't see did however)

I've found that if you can't talk to them through the chat, you could try lowering your weapon, saluting, or performing the "Safety Dance" (QEQEQEQEQE).

Oh look someone else having a moan by wildly exaggerating the lack of loot, and having a wah when someone they could have avoided kills them. You need to change your ways man.

Get a clue, some patience and some god damn balls.

On the first outing of the 1.7.1 update, I immediately made friends with a guy in a barn who was bleeding and trying to fend off Zombies much like myself, we spoke in direct chat, which works brilliantly and teamed up for about 20 minutes untill Zombies overcame us and killed us both.

On my next spawn, I made it all the way through Electro, raided the Firestation and ended up with an MP5SD6 and an AKS-74u. I was waiting for a mate of mine and decided the best place to do this was in a barn north of Electro.

I was using direct chat to warn players of two snipers above the Firestation when a guy in the barn I was in asked an a frantic voice if I was freindly. I replied yes and we very carefully sussed each other out and moved out into the tree line together.

He commented that I had a nice pack and a nice weapon, and that if he was a dick, he would shoot me and take them, I replied that he was welcome to try, to which he nervously laughed and denied that he would.

We talked for a while in direct chat while we waited for our mates, and I noticed he was only carrying a crossbow and had no pistol at all.

I thanked him for not shooting me and gave him the Aks-74U and two clips and went on my way. He was totally blown away by this kindness and added me on steam as a friend.

I finally met up with my mate and we headed north for Stary, to try and kit up a little better.

Half way there we saw movement up ahead as we came across two survivors travelling in the middle of the road we were flanking through the tree line. Now in the old days, it would have been shoot on sight. We clearly had the drop on them, with superior position and weapons, but I held fire and asked in direct chat if they were friendly, again I got very nervous replies of yes, and we met in the road.

They had aggo'd Zombies which were chasing them so my mate and I dispatched them and then we exchanged some pleasantries and discovered neither of them had any ammo.

We let them know the town we had just left was chock full of food and mak ammo, and we thanked each other and went on our way.

Now the thing is, I had NEVER used direct chat before, NEVER held fire and always just shot on sight. If I didn't, I died from the other player shooting me.

The desperate unbalanced way the game has been made is working perfectly towards encouraging us to team up, as my first day in the update clearly shows, and it's making for an even more interesting and morally challenging game.

There are still bandits who will kill on sight, don't doubt that, one ended me and my mate at Stary, but that just makes the game even more interesting...

I'm having fun with the flashlight you now spawn with, if I meet a player in the wild I blink at him 3 times with the flashlight(and then keep it off) if he gives the same signal back i go ahead and assume he is friendly, if he does not signal back he is hostile.

If they just shine at me with flashlight I salute as a friendly gesture.

Also if you manage to sneak up on a player speak with him through direct communication, if he doesn not respond with something friendly then he's probably hostile.

A good way to show that you are friendly is to not aim straight at the player with a gun but still show that you are aware of his presence.

Although if he already has a gun out you should be cautious.

Yes.

Yesterday i met some random guy, since i hardly trust anyone i came to a decision to where i either kill this dude or just leave him be. I let him live and not 10 minutes later, im crippled from a zombie attacking me, i have no morphine. and i thought i was done for. this guy comes running in and saves my ass, gives me a blood transfusion, and gives me food and water.

So yes, have trust in your fellow man

I honestly spent the first part of today seeing dead bodies along the shore, even a guy in a gillie suit (why was he on the beach) and after seeing they had flash lights I guessed the update had come out (my character hadn't died yet and so still had weapons). I was insta killed logging in a lil later. When I began fresh I honestly thought it would be as someone had said, less people shooting to kill on sight, maybe more teamwork.

There didn't seem to be a reason to murder these people, they were no threat.

I'm not complaining because I see PVP as a major part of the game, but I was surprised that people seemed even more jumpy.

Twice today people fired at me with makarovs when they had little chance of a hit, another did hit me but I got away. I later teamed up with a friend and when entering an apartment block was shot on the stairs as I turned the corner.

The guy obviously freaked as u do when people turn corners, but my friend waited for him to exit and killed him. I looted my stuff back and we continued.

I think before the hot fix barns an cities being the only places guaranteed to yield a weapon has has meant we've seen a cold style of PvP today.

with the new system of not spawning with a gun it does make people think twice about being friendly because 2 people with no guns are better than one and can work together to find that gear that they need before they starve to death.

I also had an interesting story about when i first spawned into this patch a guy with a flare was in front of me, i talked to him for a bit and he never replied, he had no way of shooting as he had no weapon and so i stole his flare and he followed me asking for it back. we then discussed whenever or not we should team up and it worked out :D. now i have no doubt he probably would of shot me if he had a gun just because he didn't know what else to do.

cherno/electro is a death trap. at night i get there and i prone in the chest high walls and i see nothing but dead bodies, open cans and fireplaces everywhere. i proned in a pile of dead people and hidden in shrubs so i can hide from a group of people with ak-47s and m19s one had a torch and walking with it while the group stayed close. i can tell there were looking for people or people who survived the massacre. since then i never trusted anyone. i manage to strike a convo on the side messages and thats the only way i communicate, i never say "lets meet somewhere" cause no matter what, they are gunna want to kill me. i never killed a person yet (i don't want the bandit skin right now) just zombies but when i get jumped by players i run i'm lucky if i get out unscath. but when i'm not i get shot up and bleed so i have to hide somewhere to patch myself up. When i pass out, i pray that they don't find me. trusting is hard for me but possible

Hard to build trust without side chat.

I only trust someone who direct comms me (VOIP), it takes more balls to have a vocal conversation with someone and then backstab them... plus you can read a certain amount from their voice, sometimes you can just tell a genuine friendly when you hear them.

You don't get the bandit skin for killing people (anymore)

Yesterday I saved 2 people running from zombies.

I was in the forest and saw them both running down. I had a clear shot on both but I decided to kill the zombies and help. I voiced "Friendly?" and they were extremely glad I helped them, or they would've been dead. So yes it is possible to from bonds with other players and not shoot on sight.

Altho if one of them would've shot me I would've killed everyone in sight from that moment ^^

best way to play the game is find some rl friends to play with you, even if u get killed by another player they cud fire back and take revenge, and in most cases save your gear :)

It is possible to trust other players, however, you will run into times where you might question that. Such as what happen to me yesterday:

I spawned near the Factory(Solnichniy) and ran my way all the way south towards Kamyshovo where I was lucky enough to spot an, "Old Bike" in town from the tree line. So I hauled a** over to the bike and hoped on and peddled away at a whooping 15kph... needless to say i had about 15-20 zeds chasing me while going down the road.

A little ways downt he road I spotted a player hiding beside a light pole most likely wondering,"WTF?" and I just rang my little bike's bell and kept on peddling towards Electro. Once I got there I checked the fire station and power plant, got a few weapons and supplies and started my journey north.

Everything was uneventful until I got lost and eventually ended up just north of Ozerko(North, Nothreast of Cherno) and got jumped by zeds while looking for supplies and my leg and bike was broken. By this time I had no ammo, 6 banadages, one can of beans, a hatchet and a prayer.

... with little food and no water my only option was to head south(very slowly) and crawl my way into any building I could manage to find. 1hour and 30 minutes(or so) later I had manage to resupply myself with enough food and water to reach Cherno. My hope was that some Kindly survivor would see my situation and help me with my broken leg, and maybe even my blood, it was below 4k.

Only thing is, the moment someone saw me they shot me.... all that for nothing, but whats cool is I thought it was such an awesome ordeal I went through just to survive and for it to end like that has only made me more weary! We live, we die, we learn :)

Morale of the story, when at your weakest no one is friendly and take steps too avoid people at all cost. Trust is a luxury not a requirement!

Part of this mods appeal is that of the unknown, who can you trust? dare you even trust? would that trust be a two way thing?

Once I helped a guy who came in from the beach at boleta airfield, he had no guns so assumed he was here to come looking for one, unfortunately for him I had already emptied the hangars and control tower of the M16 with ammo and a rather snazzy G17, so after a short introduction and exchanging "Friendly" messages I asked if he would like me to escort him to the nearby deerstands across the way to see if we could find him a weapon and assured him that I would cover him while he looked, first deerstand he hit he was awarded with a AKM with mags, he was happy..

After grabbing his spoils that I helped him to get, we departed to the fields to relative safety and he shot me point blank in the face.. I couldn't understand it?, he had my trust and I honestly thought that I had done more than enough by this point to earn his, but instead he chose to loot me of my things.

Thats the thing about DayZ, its hard to tell who is more dangerous.. the zombies or its players lol, its an emotional experience.. which is why I believe it has become so popular, you actually feel for your character which is something you certainly don't do in call of duty or other FPS and zombie type games.

I Agree, I just wish I would have run into you in cherno, my charcter could have had a long and happy life... as happy as one can be in world filled with zombies lol

As odd as it sounds, I'm more likely to trust someone if I'm part of a large group. Nothing lubricates the trust machine like being covered by an M240 and 10 guys.
