Is the Standalone likely to give better performance?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, currently DayZ is definitely playable, but there are times where I wish my FPS would be higher. I get 60fps+ outside of cities, and usually around 30-40fps whilst inside them. Occasionally I'll dip to around 25 if the server hasn't been reset in a while, or there are hordes upon hordes of zombies (or both). I play with my graphic settings all on low, as there really is no difference in terms of performance. With a game like DayZ, if I can increase the FPS by even a single digit due to lowering the settings, I'll be more than happy to do so. Things like Post-Processing, whilst looking nice, could potentially stop me from spotting someone due to the movement blur and whatnot.

Is the Standalone likely to be optimized? I know they're removing the Solder A.I from zombies and stuff, but will this really make much difference? It annoys me how certain servers have such a vast difference in terms of FPS. If it hasn't been reset in a while, I get lower FPS than usual. Hopefully the Standalone will fix this. I have an adequate PC, but the game could definitely be optimized better.

I would say +10FPS at the very most and even then this is pure speculation based on assumptions, there's not much any of us can say. Nevertheless, it can all go crack, bang and sizzle for technical reasons as most games struggle to "optimise" without out any field testing.

Lots of info on the Dayz Standalone.

Goto 55:10 for a question on the standalone optimization.

They have said they are tinkering and Ka-noodling things, greasing the pixies and lubricating the wizards, making sure the 0's and 1's are in order + removing the pesky 2's! Yep we should have a smoother program indeed!

I'm at a great FPS of at least, say, 60 when looking at the sky, about 20 FPS when outside cities, and 15 FPS when inside them. I think you should be grateful that you have 'good enough' FPS than what I bare with.

Mine are likewise, but I already played that much so I learned to ignore the lags

I heard they made zombies spawn in 1 second, rather than 5 seconds, which should boost FPS in towns and cities.

It does sound promising. I have quite an old rig but on some servers I'm blessed with 30fps in woods, and down to high teens/mid twenties for cities; again, this is server based and fluctuates.

I very much live in hope that optimisation will increase (it has to if it wants to maximise sales and player base for starters) come the standalone. I know I'll need a new computer at some stage, but hopefully I get far greater fps out of the standalone. I pray.

It may not be there at first, but it's pretty much garunteed to come eventually.

I have faith in rocket and I trust what he says in the conference which ive seen atleast twice. However, Rocket will not always have the final say I fear and this is what im scared of. I trust rocket, I dont trust the people he works for though. Because as for any big game company the goal is always one thing- profit.

But like you im hoping and praying the standalone will be well polished and running smoothly on some lower end systems that currently cant play the game very smoothly due to very little optimization.

the thing is, at best he was making a prediction, as the game wasn't complete enough at the time (all conspiracies aside)

like most multiplayer games, the real test will be when tens of 1000's of people are playing it

This time the engine is actually built for it and he already has a good idea for what works and what doesn't from the mod so I think it should turn out fine. I don't know what the sections are exactly that he refers to in that Q&A but 9 times out of 10 less is better when it comes to performance and going from 5 to 1 cuts it down considerably, freeing resources.

The only thing that saddens me is that he said the Hyneman probably won't be returning :(
