DAYZ Pro Tips

Recommended Posts

So I've seen quite a bit of tip threads for new players with the normal advice;

- Always carry morphine

- Never crawl down/up stairs

- Stay out of open fields

ETC...

What are your personal PRO TIPS? Things an experienced player really should know. Considering that these tips don't even have to be game mechanics, but can also be tactical suggestions. I have been on and off DAYZ for a while and here are a few things I always try to do.

1. Never leave backpacks in your tent unless you want someone finding your camp to have an easier way of emptying it.

2. Never leave vehicles beside tents. Find a place 200m away to hide tents unless you like leaving all your eggs in one basket.

3. Hiding your car in a tree or near a house/wall is risky. As of this patch I've still seen cars slide into objects and despawn. 1/3 of my tractor was in a wall and my 2nd car gone.

4. Never log out with valuables in a tent, make room for that 2nd NVG in your bags before you head off to bed.

5. Shooting one or two tires from your car so I can't steal it only makes me want to blow up your car if i can't repair it.

6. Always PM charb your base location and server info so I can verify how safe it is !!!

What do you guys have to add?

Never use your gun(s) to kil Zombies. Using a gun will automatically cause players that are near by to drop what they are doing and go looking for the source. This includes sd rounds. Zombies dont hear sd rounds players do.

[sarcasm]Hiding your shit at Pobeda Dam is totally safe and you should continue doing so.[/sarcasm]

Don't shoot unless you can guarantee a kill and it doesn't put you at risk. Sacrificing a position to bushwhack a random on sight will only serve to get you killed by a group that you didn't see because you were impatient. Sloppy shooting doesn't help either.

Always have an out. Don't commit to a firefight if you don't have a clear line of egress.

Having a vehicle is sweet. Putting a satchel charge into it and suicide bombing a grocery store full of bambis is hilarious. Know yourself, know your priorities, and don't be afraid to have fun.

Don't fall for the "Don't get attached to your gear" bullshit. You will die, but the sting should never go away. This is not COD, this is not Battlefield, every time you fight you wager hours/days/weeks/months of gameplay.

Know when to let it go. You lost all your shit, that sucks, you can try to get it back in a half-assed kamikaze attack or you can start collecting again. Again, priorities.

Zombies may be a joke once you learn the tricks, but they can and will fuck you up if you play stupid. Every time you pull the trigger you have to commit.

If you have to shoot more than three times with a sniper rifle you should switch to LMGs.

Don't get mad. It's just a game.

Don't panic.

Some tips I've learned whilst playing:

Don't get attached to your gear or vehicle. Death is a part of the game - accept it and move on.

Take advantage of night time and the weather. It might be harder for you to play when it's pitch black - but it's also just as hard for other players (without NVG) to play. It also makes you much less visible to zombies. I've also found that night time servers generally tend to have less bandits/hackers on them, and they're generally easier to get around populated areas without being sniped.

Only go to the major cities if you A) absolutely need to go there to hit a hospital or B) you're a fresh spawn and have nothing to lose. Even then, make it a quick in and out operation.

Trust no one! I've had people that I've trusted and played with for hours and hours turn around and stab me in the back for a better gun or some ammo. While there are other friendlies out there who will help you - remember that everyone's also out for themselves. Most people will kill you if it means that they get some better gear

Don't approach groups of players. It's risky enough approaching a lone survivor, but approaching a large group of them can often mean suicide.

Conserve ammunition, especially if you have a gun that has rare ammo.

Learn to identify a trap. See a tent or a car in the middle of an open field? Someone's probably already got their crosshairs on you.

People with bandit skins got their skin for a reason.

Don't go to North West Airfield on a populated server without expecting to die a painful death.

- Always carry morphine

To tweak this one a little, always keep at least one morphine in your main inventory for fast leg repair. You never want to fiddle with the backpack when your leg is broken and other players or zombies are about.

1. Don't ram a Ural with a moto

2. Don't lootcycle barracks during day

3. Don't play alone

4. Shoot 2 tires on your vehicle/empty your fuel when you log off (And have 2 backup tires and repair when you log back in, jerrycans)

5. Don't have weapons and ammo in the same vehicle.

6. Don't drive in the forrest with damaged engine (red)

7. Don't go near Stary

8. Have atleast 1 SD-Weapon

9. Don't use long-range snipers without rangefinders, leave them/stash them instead.

10. Its not worth it. (Considering killing others, they usually only have Enfields and Painkillers. UNLESS, you can get a clear shot, like sneaking up from behind.)

Pro Tip #1: ALWAYS play naked.

That is all.

Wearing a nice scarf will compliment your nakedness and is considered not breaking the rule.

A scarf is completely acceptable, especially this time of year.

Scarfs in the Winter, bow-ties in the Fall, umbrella hats in Spring and beach bonnets in the Summer time!

Only the players sitting right next to you... If you're talking about hearing the round land, sure.

Protip: Take 10 minutes to learn how to fly in the ArmA tutorials. Why would you spend 3 hours fixing a helicopter that you barely know how to fly? Make your mistakes in the tutorial, not in the world.

Don't do backflips or rolls in your helicopters in DayZ. It's really not funny, or cool and its just a waste, you're going to end up blowing it up anyway. I don't mind it in ArmA because dying in ArmA doesn't really have any consequences.

Get better at gear management. If you can't check the contents and loot a supermarket, solo, in less than 60 seconds, you need to speed it up.

  • Try and remain on high ground and always near cover, if you're logging out somewhere near a town or city do so far enough away that you can see if any zombies have spawned due to other players and preferably be on a hill.
  • Play with headphones or clear and loud speakers so you can hear footsteps/breathing/gunshots. I find headphones particularly useful as especially with gunshots it helps me find the direction and distance of the shot.
  • Always keep smoke grenades/flares handy for distracting zeds and I like to have a frag grenade handy in case of vehicle encounters - practice in ArmA recommended though as they're tricky to aim.

Protips:

Always Carry these Items in your main inventory: Morphine, Smoke Grenade, Food, Water.

Smoke grenades make zombies go very far and very fast. Commit to your aim

Check a town out with binocs first, if your over 300m away and theres already zombies, theres already people.

Using low-population servers to get better loot isnt frowned upon. Server hopping is.

If your within 50m of a zombie, you should be prone. Unless its night, then you should just be shift-walking

Just because a gun is rare does not make it better. The second that fancy camo SVD runs dry in a firefight, a CZ 550 could have 5 clips in tow.

[For tents/vehicles] Make your loadouts useful. Dont take that extra backpack weapon if your going on a supply run. The more food/water/ammo you can get, the better. In contrast, if your expecting a fight at various ranges, sometimes its safer to take an extra sniper or rifle.

Just because its the middle of the map does NOT mean that its a bad place for a tent. Ive had tents in the middle of forests go undetected for months, but tents at the very north of the map get ransacked in a day.

Ghillie suits look like bushes for a reason. It would probably be better to wear civvie clothing in urban areas, the plain, blocky colors morph into the walls

If its a clan private server, and your not in a group, consider yourself the hunted. They'll be looking for you.

If you hear a shot, your first instinct should be to ask "Why am I here?". If the answer is anything but "To kill people", then its not a bad decision to lay low. That shot could be a lure for other snipers, who could find you just as easily as the one who shot.

If you shoot an enfield in any city, your gonna have a bad time

3 places that are overlooked but VERY useful. Zelenogorsk ( 3 barns, gas station, superstore) North East Air Field (Heli spawns, military loot), and Vybor ( Mini-Cherno)

Unless your bleeding, with red blood indicator, while flashing food and water, dont EVER go to Stary Sobor. Your gonna make a sniper very happy.

Just because they dont have a gun in their hand doesnt mean they arent armed. If they have a backpack bigger than the patrol pack, they probably have a gun in there.

If your being shot at by a sniper, take cover. Next check your surroundings, if you have cover that is out of his line of sight, sprint to it. Snipers generally arent good enough to hit a moving target that is switching cover, and cant adjust quickly enough to hit a target moving less than 10m.

If you throw a flare, your making a commitment to letting anyone in a 500-1000 (depending on weather) distance know where you are.

Know your enemy. Even if your decked out in NVG's, a fresh spawn could easily throw a flare and mess up your day. It takes long enough for your avatar to adjust his eyes to the light difference that a man with a makarov could kill you, loot your stuff, bury you, and dance on your grave.

Watch the map. If you see a marker saying "Camp here", its probably a trap. For the more audacious, it would mean setting up an ambush yourself. A sniper is only going to be sitting there so long.

If you hear a helo, its a 1/3 chance that it cant flip your pancakes. The MI-17 and UH1Y both have guns. The little bird does not. Unless your an amazing shot, its better to take cover and let them pass

Just because theres a tent with only an enfield and a can of beans in it doesnt mean you should destroy it. If your well off, just let it be.

Take care.
