Coats (Hot and colds)

Recommended Posts

Apparently you can get ill in DayZ? I didn't know.

Well it should be easier to get ill.

20 minutes in the rain should cause you to get ill.

A face sneezing icon could appear above all the icons along the right side indicating your now ill.

It will cause:

  • Half speed while running (Player also holds hands up to face like theyre breathing into them to keep warm)
  • Slightly shaky while in first person aiming mode. Not unable to aim properly, just a nuisance.

How to stop your character from catching a cold or to heal yourself.

  • Wearing a coat will warm your character to neutral, thus healing him.
  • Being in shelter will do the same.

There could be a few different coats.

  • Hiker rain coat. (Bright red, yellow ones. Ones you buy from normal Hiking shops, medium spawn rarity)
  • Military poncho rain coat (A green hood and poncho styled rain coat, less noticable. Highly rare spawn)

Getting sick from the rain is a stupid old wives tale, nothing more than pseudo science.

Sure. If you mean somebody says you will catch a cold by running out into the rain to check to mail thats not likely.

But then stay out in the rain for a long time let me know how you feel. Stay out in the rain when cloudly weather sets in and you can't dry off for 12 hours let me know how it feels. Stay in the rain with no shelter as night time is setting in a cold climate areas, maybe err Russia, let me know if you're alive in the morning.

To the OP your idea is being implemented. We have new clothes. The impacts and depth of those items has yet to be explained but it's safe to assume weather/survival elemnts will eventually play a big role.

For a Dr. you should know that hypothermia is very prevalent, even in developed countries.

I like this idea... the bright red color would stick out like a sore thumb though, the military poncho would be more easily obtainable than the runner's jacket however (due to Chernarus being a overridden military fallout zone).

I think it would be more realistic (not to mention mildly humorous) if you make the poncho be more common than the bright-red runner's jacket... I can just picture a noob just sprinting away from me right now in a bright-red jacket screaming on direct chat "DON'T KILL ME THIS JACKET IS RARE!!!"

ahh but hypothermia is a very real thing that can happen from exposure to the elements.

OP this is a good idea. Rocket mentioned it in one of his interviews. I don't remember which one exactly. Maybe of the mods that is on top of his game will remember and post the vid.

But don't worry. Rocket wanted players to face the dilemma of:

A: wearing a bright coat and being warm

B: Not being bright but being cold

I remember that actually, more to the point the map Namelsk with its warm clothes can seriously stick out sometimes against the white snow, I personally think they're should be some kind of brighter mor civi kind of clothes like that, like a woolly coat or red/blue bomber jacket.

I walk in the rain for hours at a time... I don't see why you would get sick form it...

Some people have a high immunity system. (correct me if I'm wrong)

But I like the idea, its so awesome. I mean if you just think about the atmosphere that creates. Imagine yourself in the forrest under some shelter in the woods, fire burning beside you, you're in your favourite coat and just feeling the warmth that surrounds you. Mmm..

No it's not. 700 people die every year in the United States because of it. On the internet, anyone can be an expert!

Maybe if you strip naked and run around in the rain for hours on end without attempting to warm yourself, otherwise it's not something serious. Half the people that actually die from it die because of age related problems. Anyway, I was referring to the OP's statement that getting a cold is caused by the rain (or at least heavily implied).

I don't know. I'm in a rather warm country (Thai) and thirty minutes in the rain is more than enough to guarantee that I will catch a cold, or a slight fever!

It's nothing serious and should cure in a day or even less, but I would feel suck for the whole day!

Now I'm in a warm country, in the city and did have chances to dry myself up. Now imagine you are up in Russia, in a forest with nothing to warm and dry your self without calling zeds and bandits!

Also try walking in the rain for about an hour and tell me how you fare after that! I did try that once (I missed my bus stop and I was late for my exam and it was raining) and felt terrible!

Rain are serious dude!

Are you genuinely trying to compared one of the most developed countries in the world with some of the best medical facilities in the world with wide access to clothing, shelter and heat to a fictional post-soviet country after an apocalypse?

They are quite different, especially when there is an extremely high chance that you are dehydrated, starving and have nothing but light clothing on.

It will definitely be exacerbated by swimming in cold water (which happens a lot in DayZ), trauma (Getting attacked/shot happens a lot), as well as the previously mentioned hunger/dehydration.

Comparing these to the death rates in the US is just laughable, at least try and cherry-pick some relevant statistics next time.

Okay Dr. When was the last time you went out in the rain. With out proper rain gear you will get wet. And when you get wet you can get cold very easily. Going hiking in the woods with a regular shirt on during a rain storm could actually be dangerous. That is why IRL NO ONE does that.

Back in the day, people used to die to the elements far more frequently than today. Not very many people die today because of modern technology. But all the technology is worthless in the apocalypse.

Are you serious? You tell everyone that hypothermia is prevalent in developed countries, so I provide some statistics to prove you wrong, and now you're contradicting yourself and looking even more like a moron by telling me that's laughable? You're basically laughing at yourself. Speaking of statistics, it would be nice for you to provide some instead of pulling things out of your self absorbed ass pretending to be an expert like everyone on the internet does.

Also, the US is not one of the most developed countries in the world. Not only does it have one of the worst medical systems in the world, it's not even top 30 worldwide. Not to mention the various poverty and economic problems (national debt reaching over 16 trillion, that alone would be enough to end poverty and starvation in various countries). On top of that, 25% of the prisoners in the world are held in the United States, with 1 in 100 Americans being in jail.

Like I said, hypothermia would not be a problem unless you remained naked in the rain for hours on end, or jumped into freezing cold water for a certain duration and not attempting to seek a warmer area afterwards. Staying dry is extremely easy, not only is there buildings everywhere (that you will be able to enter when SA is released) but forests and trees that you could use as temporary shelter. Besides it's not the rain it self that causes hypothermia it's being exposed to cold, so even wearing a yellow rain coat thing will not do much to help prevent it. Look, I can totally see being cold a problem, and it is, but dying from it or having serious affects because of it or the rain is absurd and would be an extremely rare occurrence.

Back in the day, people used to die to the elements far more frequently than today.

Statistics please?

You can definetly get sick from getting wet for long periods. The water cools your body temperature down, so your body is now focusing on raising its temperature instead of fighting off bacteria/disease and you get sick.
