Celle pronunciation

Recommended Posts

I had a semester of German in High School, but like a lot of Americans this one threw me. After throwing out about a half dozen different pronunciations of this over Skype with my buddy, I looked it up--so for those who are as ignorant yet curious as I am:

ˈʦɛlə or (t)SEL-eh

I really don't know. I pronounce it "Selly". I can almost guarantee that's wrong though. Glad I could help.

No, thats why I started the thread Fraggle--I posted above how to pronounce it. The link is to a little audio file of a bonafide German pronouncing it. "tSEL-eh", basically. Hint of a "t" or "ch" sound at the beginning.

Sorry about that, it was a little unclear, I edited the original post above.

Is it even a German word? Looks French to me.

But then again i am a lazy English (sort of) speaker so what do i know of other languages?

I kept saying Calle at first, a French city, I know that was confusing me.

I always thank the language gods that I was born in an English speaking country, and that English emerged as the default global language. Otherwise I'd be screwed. Although I live in California and Spanish is a close second.

I would say a little more like SELL-"eh".

Now that that's settled, what about Object All? :P

I've been pronouncing like Jelly but with a Ch like in church, and a slightly quicker ee sound than Jelly.Chell-e like maybe the e in Italian latte.

Edit - yep, it's German and prounced the way I thought but in a much more gentle and elegant way than my English can do. I studied German and French for a few years but it was a long time ago. So I kind of understood how it might sound in German, French or Italian (as I have Italian friends and grew up around many Italian people). And yet I still managed to make it sound more like jelly than anything else.

Mjp808, I'm over my quota of beans for the day or I'd have given you some for that one! :beans: Object 2 or Object all. I've heard both but which is correct? I've no idea!

That's perfectly described by TheDuriel, much better than my description. The "ts" sound isn't like in tsar, it's softer and sounds like someone with a lisp whispering church but you know it's not ch, it sounds like a very soft ts where you might expect a ch to be found in English. OK, I'm wittering now. Goodnight! :beans:

I've always assumed from the beginning, I think correctly, that that was a programming oversight by the DayZ DB Map folks(?), it's funny how that has become the name for those two areas, same as Norinsk or Cherno or any other city or map point.

I'll forgive you this time Sula, but try not to be so willy-nillily(Pilkingtonism) generous with your beans :P

It is great how interested the people are in this forum. I am from Ger and to read the different pronounciations is really funny (NOT in a bad way!). But the two soundfiles are completely right.

I like this map very much. A lot of residentials, Celle itself is a great PvP spot, the map has two airfields with a lot of barracks.

yeah, celle is a great map, especially the woods are well made

though i now found a Taviana server and it's far bigger and way more fun to play

It's a fantastic map, loads of new (Not in dayz before) models for barracks, hangars and market, even a proper pub with chairs outside!! some good stuff in here. Makes a decent break from all the usual stuff in Chernarus. Its big,

The new zombie models are great too, Eastern eggs indeed, and those floor matts?!?!?

It's great

And why isnt Taviana in DayZCom yet? How did Celle get there so fast?

I agree that Celle is not the greatest overall, but I like parts of it. The woods. The hesher zombies--it looks like the virus spread during a Scorpions concert at Celle Arena circa 1983. While they were all passing infected joints around.

I was honestly thinking the same thing earlier.
