Tidbits, nicknacks and other fun items.

Recommended Posts

''Non-combat items are too boring..'' I said to myself, while running the 3-hour marathon to NW-airfield. ''There need to be more items with some kind of point...'' So that brought me here, because as you can see I'm a fresh join.

Think about your average lootspawn, what does it contain?

Some empty cans, a set of road flares, maybe a clip. But what's missing here?

Personal items of people long past! A picture, a poem, A musical instrument. Saved from the dead?

The thing DayZ currently lacks is a fleshed out game world. Chernaraus has no personality, no soul.

You never think about the people who lived in that house you just looted, do you?

Say you find a trumpet, It doesn't bother you so you take it along on your journey, attempting to play songs using an interface (like a QWERTY combination?) while wandering the wastes. Remembering you of the time you looted it.

Interactible items give players a connection to them, meaning that people will become more carefull as to protect that beloved trumpet, or rather not risk getting shot up, destroying that nice bell.

Basicly, the world needs some fleshing out. And some fun items will really make that happen!

I agree. As well as all of the useful stuff it would be nice to just have random objects too. With trading as it is bartering these items could even become popular.

It would be pretty cool to find random items with some sort of interactivity. Maybe there could be pianos in some houses that you could play :D

I like it. I think it adds to the depth and immersion of the game as well as your attachment to your current player's life. Some stuff can be kept on you such as watches, hats, small interactive items. Others can be left at the bases they're suppose to be implementing.

Some would have to be kept exactly where you found them. Moving a piano back to your base isn't going to work out too well. Of course unless you reinforce the house and move in. I wonder if base building will allow you to reinforce and stay in preexisting structures.

Hello there,

Crikey! a new original idea!

I also agree, these nicknacks and whojamafilps would add a feeling of context and history to the game without giving an enforced backstory.

For me, the items would have to be useable in someway, ie books readable, instruments "playable" etc. Perhaps some items requiring batteries.

I like this idea, vastly.

Totally agree and these are the kinds of tools that should be in the sandbox.

Some will look at them and say "wth? I don't care about this stupid thing..."

Someone else will grab it and say "Awesome!" and run down the road tooting their new horn.

Also consider how these items can be used and impact the game world. Keeping with the trumpet idea. You can use it as a trumpet and play a song. You could also use it as a diversion for not only zombies but other players. Perhaps it could also be used as an improvised weapon in a pinch?

I think the hatchet is a good example something like this already in game. It's used to gather wood, kill zombies, and kill other players.

The hunting knife is a bad example. I can ONLY use it for cleaning game. Items should not be restricted to a single use. I should be able to stab zombies with it or throw it or other uses.

interesting for atmosphere, but i dont see it coming in a long way, but to me they will only become trash like empty tin cans, with no real help to survive, maybe for some small laughs at the boring times that will come inside of your camp.

I guess that is what would be cool with it; that once "useful" things will become useless trash in the game. So when you go through a house you cherish the canned food and throw the video games away. :)

Great idea, love it! Things like dog tags at mil bases, journals in houses, medical reports of infected patients in hospitals could add depth to the story of Chernarus for those who appreciate it.

Maybe there could even be items that will initiate a kind of treasure hunt, like a file found in a mil base which would mark the location of a secret loot spawn on a players map after reading it, or even just a rough sketch for players to work out the meaning of on their own?

Awesome idea, i'm fond of the idea of finding a lether stetson in a house, then maybe some time down the line finding a plastic sheriffs star in a childs bedroom, and then, with jsut a single action revolver and a Whinchester, becoming the sheriff of cherno!

Yes. This is an excellent idea and could be constantly updated too.

Imagine you are unarmed and barely alive after being attacked and chased through the woods by zeds, blurred vision and the like. You make it to a building with several floors and think...yes safety. As you get to the first floor you can hear a faint noise...like alarm...or more like music whaa whaa, whaa whaa...it creeps the shit out of you but something compels you to find it's source. Every floor brings you closer to this sound...it's much louder WHAAA WHAA, WHAA WHAA. You burst into the last room on the floor and there you find a heavily tooled up guy sitting on the floor playing an old busted accordion. He stops playing stands up and....hands you some beans... :D

This - along with furniture - would make the game so much more enjoyable. Imagine if we had some physics in the items even!

Oh the joy!

Alternatively, giving players accesories like hairpins, or a nice necklace would also change things up.
