cheezitschrist 15 Posted October 18, 2012 Yes I know, "here we go again." It's just the truth. I can't believe the devs made the horrible mistake of removing this and aren't going to fix it.Ever since they did, every server I've been playing on has been PvP fighting, with the zombies just a minor nuisance. How is this realistic? In a real life zombie apocalypse it would not be every single man for himself, there would be groups of people banding together for survival.Lately I've been seeking out servers that have side chat enabled and the gameplay experience is so much better. The majority of players are friendly, work together and help each other, and were warning each other about the location of bandits, as they probably would be in real life through the use of radios.Removing this was a terrible mistake. I hear War Z has it. I'll have to try it out if that's true.
Fraggle (DayZ) 15720 Posted October 18, 2012 (edited) Just to keep you informed it was removed due to the high level of spamming ruining the immersion for other players. As far as I know the intention is to have radio's in the standalone, problem solved! Edited October 18, 2012 by Fraggle

Is there a thread or article about them putting radios in the stand alone?I'd also be fine with text chat only for global communications, with no voice chat. Since that can be annoying. puppetworx 474 Posted October 18, 2012 I've been playing exclusively on side-chat enabled servers these last few weeks. It's freaking great as long as nobody spams their mic but even then you can mute them. Definitely a better game with it enabled IMO.
Fraggle (DayZ) 15720 Posted October 18, 2012 It's was discussed A LOT but it was quite a while ago when the chat was removed. Take a look here: http://dayzmod.com/forum/index.php?/topic/38476-the-one-line-questions-for-rocket-thread/It's along list of questions and answers about the standalone. It'll give you a better idea of what to expect and will save you scouring the forum.

Swineflew 480 Posted October 18, 2012 Side chat and player interaction is always a "slippery slope" in my opinion when it comes to dayz.On one hand it does ruin some immersion, but I think developing a community is more important for the game itself.Knowing who killed you, and who you're looking at, talking about camps and warning of ambushes, forming rivalries and smack talk are all (mostly) good things to help keep people interested and playing.Anon 1 killing Anon 2 and Anon 2 will most likely never know who killed him. That's where the story ends on that conflict. Anon 2 respawns and might get revenge if he kills someone in that area, although he'll never really know if it was Anon 1.Interaction allows an untold number of stories to unfold, rivalries, betrayal, teamwork, people forming groups or sharing intel. So I am willing to give up "realism" or immersion in order to promote community growth. I'd say allow people to leave the chat if they don't like it, but I feel that chat, name tags and killed by messages only promote community. I do believe that name tags need balance and kill messages should be displayed to the person killing and only the dead person gets a killed by message./semi relevant rant.
cheezitschrist 15 Posted October 18, 2012 you organise anything on sidechat on a server i'm on and I will be there waiting for youSo what? That's part of the risk of communication. And that's fine. It also adds some strategy because you have to be careful about what information you give out over the global communication.
maddyn99 (DayZ) 25 Posted October 18, 2012 Plenty of public servers with side chat enabled. Some with VoN and some with just text. I would say they are much more fun to play on than those without. It might be technically against the rulez but i have yet to see one shut down over sidechat.

People will be able change freuencies, listen in and communicate with other players all without the need for "magic-global-chat!". I take your point about communities being important but in a game like DayZ immersion is everything and I bloody hate that scrolling blue text in the corner. BreakdanceJesus 3 Posted October 18, 2012 While the spam can be annoying at times, side chat (text, NOT voice) is the only way to draw the attention of an admin to report hacking/suspicious players on a server. Any server i have logged onto with side chat fully disabled has been a hack riddled nightmare. I fully support no holds bar pvp... there's always psychopaths in the world who would kill another over a can of beans... but being unable to contact an admin quickly to report blatant hacking makes a server completely unplayable. If you have active admins and good hax software there's no need to have side chat enabled purely as a means to communicate with the admin. Where I play we have TS and a shoutbox in the forums. These are barely needed though because the admins have ensured that hacking just isn't an issue on their servers.
patrick_insanity@hotmail.com 111 Posted October 18, 2012 Well you could see the side channel as a big radio channel so basicly people could use it to gain intel on players' whereabouts while remaining silent, while others attempt to communicate with other friendly players. I've experienced the side-chat being treacherous but I also ended up playing with 3 other people this one time, they picked me up with a humvee and a huey and we had quite some fun (Takistan). I also got into a group of 4 people in a different server (Lingor), we all started from scratch and basicly teamed up eventually for some time, no backstabbing afterwards (I had one weird as experience however at the end of this trip with this one other guy who remained after the others 3 left.)Though yeah I'm sure I've gotten myself killed a few times by using the side-chat aswell. but I do understand why they removed it early on with the whole immersion problem. the whole radio idea sounds awesome however! Sutinen 635 Posted October 18, 2012 (edited) I know right, once I made friends with half of the guys on one server. We even tried to meet up. That obviously didn't work out, but we kept talking about what we found and saw :DThen there were the bushwookies with 1000 kills that just were silent. And if you hate some guys talking on the sidechat, you can mute them. I once ended up in a Russian server and I had to mute 6 people.. Edited October 18, 2012 by Sutinen

thelonewarrior 886 Posted October 18, 2012 Dont forget that side chat enables people to avoid hackers easily.Without it, a hacker can ruin every character on the server. In games with side chat ive seen players leave after 2-3 people report a hacker, the server empties and the hacker moves on to another server.I believe side chat should only be avaliable to those with radios, however I have seen how useful it is and the other day I played on server where 2 hackers were in cherno on the international hotel...... 30+ people decended on cherno and tried to take them out and get their nametag for the admin, I was unfortunantly shot on the way by an alt f4 guy who later got banned for combat logging. He shot me once and then alt f4ed when I returned fire, im pretty sure he died though as when I returned to my body I found his body there logged back in dead. I had to ask someone to come and kill me as for some reason his AKM round put me in a state of perminant unconciousness, which is something else I would have been stuck with if not for asking someone to come and kill me

SmashT 10907 Posted October 19, 2012 I can't stand side chat, it ruins the immersion of the game, increases metagaming and always results in my ears bleeding from some idiot that decides to scream over the mic despite servers having rules against it, I like the randomness of player encounters with it off and find myself killing people just because they are annoying when it's on.
