So you have wandered into this DayZ mod and you want to know more about it? Well, I will tell you what I can. Keep in mind this is from my own perspective and is only an opinion. The Good Big open world environment, lots of items and weapons, post apocalyptic zombies (who doesn’t like zombies?), vehicles, an interesting hunger/thirst system. The Bad Incredibly clunky controls, All in-game signs are written in Russian, almost no character customization (everybody looks almost exactly the same), a massive population of hackers/cheaters, no persistent character advancement, very anti-social community. The Review Over the last few weeks a number of friends started playing this game mod en-masse. They seemed to be enjoying it. So I asked them some questions about the game and decided to pick it up so I could play with them. I have played my fair share of games over the years, although I knew a few of the problems with this title before buying, I felt I could manage. The first major hurdle was learning the control scheme. I must say that these are some of the worst and most clunky shooter controls I have ever learned. The resident evil series remains on top of the list for clunky controls, but only barely. DayZ tries to be a first person shooter with standard controls. But they are very complex and half the time do not function properly. These controls are so clunky that I could write an entire page describing how bad they are. As “The Angry Video Game Nerd” would say, they are bad – like Dark Castle Bad. If you haven’t played it, you have no idea how shitty these controls are. Aiming is nearly impossible, and picking up items is like attempting to pick up a melting ice cube with only your elbows. And for the love of god – don’t try to climb ladders, you have a good chance of just falling off and breaking your legs. Speaking of broken legs. Everything can break your leg. You can trip over a fence and break your leg. Yes I just said that. Walk up to a fence, press the proper key to step ever-so-slowly over it, and viola~! Your leg is now broken and you are bleeding out on the ground. Opening a door is even worse, if you are standing in the wrong spot when you open it, the door will hit you, possibly glitching you inside a building, which will break your leg, wound you, and possibly knock you out. Zombies hitting you can also break bones far too easily. The zombie runs up, hits you once on the chest, you fall down with a broken leg, bleeding, and knocked unconscious, the zombie then chews on your unconscious broken body till you die. Zombies also zig zag all over the place, randomly teleport short distances, or glitch through walls doors and buildings. This makes zombies quite difficult to kill without getting hit and very possibly giving you a broken leg and knocking you out in a single blow. Fun times. Then there are travel times. Think incredibly long. If you remember Oblivion you may be familiar with extremely large game maps, DayZ is roughly equivalent in size and a lot more boring. So you start the game, it randomly drops you in a starting area, and you decide to go meet up with your friends. Expect to spend the next hour (or possibly two!) running across the landscape just to reach their location. There is no fast travel system of any sort. And if you happen to be killed, expect to start all over again. This leads to my next point. Nothing is persistent in regards to your character. If you die, everything you own is dropped on the ground, anyone can take everything you had, and there are no sort of learned character skills which can be built up as you progress. This encourages players to simply kill each other to quickly obtain items and equipment. Expect to start at square one with a fresh character for most of your DayZ experience. Then there are the hackers. Oh yes. This game has a massive amount of Hackers and Cheaters. Almost always their entire goal is to ruin your day. I had heard a horror story of one from one of my friends before I started. He had a run-in with a cheater who teleported him out into an endless flat plain and left him there. He could not die, he sat there in game for literally 4 hours real time till his character eventually starved to death – finally allowing him to start playing again. I figured it could not be too bad, the game designers must be aware of the hacking and be actively trying to stop it right? Not so. As it turns out, DayZ is incredibly easy to hack and has been since its inception – just google 'Arma II ***/hacks' if you want and find out. The game has an anti-cheat system installed, but it obviously does not work. This leads to players with ultimate equipment, teleporting around, killing everyone, modifying the game world, spawning vehicles, items, and generally abusing other players in an effort to get their twisted jollies. Finally I should address the community. This games 'end-game' seems to be purely designed around fighting other players. It has a veneer coating in the form of a large, post apocalyptic world. Initially the goal seems to be survive and gather items to perpetuate your survival. But beyond that there is absolutely no goal. No quests, no storyline, no faction groups to align or fight against, no area to run from or get to -- Just you and some other players in a large zombie infested game map. Someone I know summed it up for me in a rather disturbing way, he said; “other survivors are like item filled meat bags”. The idea being – to simply kill them and take their stuff. Most people playing this game seem to regard this as their goal. Since you can’t trust anyone else, it is easier to simply shoot everything on sight – making this game Call Of Duty with zombies. It also creates an incredibly anti-social environment for new players. Since the world is full of cheaters, hackers, and people who get their jollies from generally abusing and hurting others. There are also a surprising number of people who do not care about items, they just get a sniper rifle, sit up in some well-traveled area, and shoot as many people as they can. Now don ‘t take this the wrong way, I completely understand what makes games centered around PvP fun. I just do not think it fits in a game where most players are just trying to survive against hordes of zombies. This is not some sort of ‘Left 4 Dead’ where some players are zombies and others are real players, This is purely real live players vs ai controlled zombies initially. It is player choice which causes people to attack each other – and often it is over petty items. I read a post a while ago where a player gleefully described shooting someone simply to get their matches. He could just have easily found his own matches, or shared the fire with the strangers, or teamed up with them until he found his own. But instead he chose to kill these random strangers for a pack of matches… I still feel sickened and disturbed by his actions. And this is common behavior! It seems it is not enough that most people in this game world are dead already, the survivors feel this need to kill each other rather than working together. Synopsis This is DayZ. The game rewards those who hurt others. There is no punishment for harmful behavior. Turning the game into an incredibly antisocial environment. When combined with the prevalence of hacking, amazingly clunky controls, a written in-game language which most of the world can not speak, a very glitchy game world, bugged zombies, glitchy buildings, and killer doors, a complete lack of character advancement, no storyline/factions/quests. There is very little reason to play this game. So why did I try to play it for the last week? Three reasons. I enjoy games in a post apocalyptic setting. I had a number of friends playing it. I could not return it and get my money back. However I can no longer justify playing it for these reasons. So I felt it was time to post a bit about my experiences and shelve this title. If you are a player looking for good post apocalyptic games, check out the following titles: Fallout 3, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Call of Pripyat, Id Software's RAGE, Wasteland, Metro 2033, or maybe even Borderlands 1 or Borderlands 2. For games due out in the future, keep an eye on Survarium (a free-to-play game made by the same people who made the excellent STALKER series), and Metro Last Light - both due out in 2013. But stay far away from DayZ.

So guys. My name is David, I am 18 years old from the UK. I've been playing for a good few months now (can't remember when). I was part of a clan but everybody pretty much quit due to the crazy amount of hackers that popped up a while ago. This was when password protected servers and whitelists were frowned upon so it was impossible to play. Anyways they are all inactive now and I am looking for somewhere else to go. I have a lot of experience, especially with solo work i.e. looting electro/cherno/berzino/NW and driving vehicles since the server I play on is pretty low population. I know a huge amount of vehicle spawns. Also the server doesn't use waypoints so I can pretty much drive from one side of the map to the other without looking at a map. So yeah I have a mic so let me know if you want me to join you guys, my steam is bylt94.

I think the main thing with tents right now is that they don't fit their purpose. Just like vehicles, they can be easily spotted from a distance and cannot be hidden from birds-eye-view. I really hope this is something that will change, maybe add camouflage.

Okay, so I'm fairly new to day z (played for 3 days now) and i have been having a lot of fun on a few servers, i'm just wondering if it is common for admins of public hive servers to gather up all the vehicles and long weapons (scoped rifles) and stash them all in a base at the edge of the map? Well thats what has been happening on DE 2977. I was playing with some friends who have the game, trying to get used to looting and such. Some guy found their base and broadcast the location to all on the server. long story short, we went up there and they saw us, started restarting the server and then killed use when we spawned back in. not only that but from my limited knowladge it looked as though someone was trying to spawn things in. So we all spawned as new chars, went looting and i managed to find a black off roader and an apache in chernogorsk. we got the crew together in the passion wagon and found all the stuff we needed to attack these muppets. Got the bird in the air and as my friends were attacking their helicopters they spoke up in chat asking if it was me flying the chopper to which i said "F*** yeah! Retribution!" (i wasn't in the helli) I was then kicked, they then proceeded to kick most people on the server before restarting it. This has really marred my gaming experience at the moment and im just wondering if this sort of thing is common on public hives, not forgetting that that is what server type this is. If it was a private hive i don't think i would mind, but i lost a fair bit of gear when i got kicked and now have to find it all again there will be video evidence of our escapades too as i believe one of the guys was recording the whole thing.

I know its a bit taken from warz, but I think the note thing they have is pretty sweet. I think it would be better utilized if we could use Notes to Identify belongings. Think of it. You could have pencils(tool) added to the loot table. then you could have paper found in residential areas. You could use the same animation as making a fire and all it would do is make a note saying some basic things. Maybe person who made it the note, and date and time. Then the user could place the note in the tents and ppl would have the ability to view it. I cant tell you how many times guys in my clan will find my tents. loot its belongings, then drop everything on the ground. Steel my vehicles and later on say.. Oh crap! that was yours! I dont want to give out the locations of my stuff. But if someone should stumble accross it they should know whos it is. OR.. on another note. It sure would be nice if we could have tents exit as we exit. :) Maybe a dream.

yeah man. Cargo carrying scripts in dayz would be sweet. I used a script in one of the domination missions I made that allowed you to load vehicles in vehicles, other weapons in vehicles. Not to mention the transport ability how choppers can carry vehicles. This would be best. However, a simple bike in a truck would work for me. -

Totally agree, i too found a bike but i was alone with my car and i didn't fancy driving off to hide my car in whatever storage location was closest and then walking back to take the bike to another location etc. Would make so much more sense if we could transport a vehicle using another vehicle. Even tow trucks would be sweet to allow us to transport other vehicles around when you are short on drivers etc. I had, at one point in time, 6 different vehicles hidden around the map by myself. I never had far to go to grab a vehicle but it was pretty nightmareish to maintain my vehicle pool. -

OP insinuates everybody enjoys the same thing in DayZ. While i can agree that the survival aspect of DayZ is broken at the current time (Food and drink is everywhere if you know where to look, hunting is just a bonus) i don't agree with "the only fun is to pick up an 1866 and PK in cherno til you die..." because my fun lies in finding good gear and NOT dying with it while fighting other players with good gear knowing very well that it's you or them once in battle and it takes quite some time to regain all that was lost. (Not talking AK's here...) Then there's the whole sandbox element of DayZ, you make it into what you want it to be. If you want to pass through all of cherno without being spotted by neither player nor zed then that becomes an awesome minigame in itself. If you play at night and sneak up on other players until you are 1 meter behind them and yell BOO! in direct chat you might find enjoyment in seeing them shit their pants before you break their bones with an axe and run off as he tries to hit you with his lee enfield only to get roflstomped by a thousand zombies. Or you can kidnap players for sport, enter them into bambi deathmatches as seen on video site XYZ. Or you can help others enjoy the game, take risks and experiment with other players trustworthyness etc. Or you can try and collect all the different vehicles in the game in your super secret base... Or you can force players out of their newfound gear without killing them, piracy can be fun too! You can drop bambis off at the far edges of the world where they have no idea how to get back to civilization... There are endless possibilities really! But aside from all the possibilities you never mentioned (and that players do all the time) i agree with your basic idea, adding more game mechanics to the game. Rebuilding infrastructure, creating items out of raw resources, maintaining your equipment, actually having to survive by finding shelter. Not just when you are logged on but throughout. Adding features that allow more RP elements to be performed without using bruteforce methods to compensate for the lack of options in the PvP department and so on. EDIT: Forgot to mention another thing you can do in DayZ... Form a team of players so you can have gang wars and claim whole cities for your gang/peers/survivors/whatever. Many servers set up two or more teams on private hives that are meant to battle eachother for dominance of the map or a region of it. Base vs Base warfare etc. -

We were driving around tonight and found a bicycle. We couldn't really pick it up because we were heading somewhere in a hurry. It would be sweet as hell if we would be able to mount bikes to the back of cars like we see in the real world. Just a suggestion. -
I like this idea but it has a couple of obvious "quirks" that would need to be worked out. For instance: How do you escape imprisonment? Will you be able to log off safely when imprisoned? Will these tools/items always be available, be common or be uncommon? When can you be imprisoned? The above listed are important for such a feature to be viable. For instance, nobody want's to be imprisoned for a long time without being able to do anything. So obviously there would have to be a way to break free, like moving a certain number of meters away from the person who grabbed you or a timeout or even an active action that you could take to break free. (Possibly with a suitable animation and sound so the "guard" can see/hear you try and break loose) I would go for option 1 and 3, moving out of range from the guard/kidnapper would free you and/or using the break free option would free you after 20-30 seconds of struggling with it. And if caught trying to break free, the options lie with the guard(s) really... Kill the prisoner or knock him out? (thus canceling the break free attempt) As for logging off, as long as your character is imprisoned it will stay on the server. That means, unless you break free or escape by foot (as described above) you will not be able to leave safely. Your character will still be around, inanimate and incapable of defending itself from whatever harm there may be. Of course, if the arrester/guard/kidnapper logs off or moves away (as described above) your character is instantly freed and is released from the server. (So yeah, a server restart will release all captives too obviously) So, what about if you wanted to switch servers when arrested? How would that work then? This is a tough one really and the easiest (and possibly the most reasonable solution) would be that if you log onto another server then all gear you had is dropped (and temporarily stored) on the server you played on where you where imprisoned. Additionally, if you are killed on the server you where imprisoned on you die on whatever server you are now playing on with a suitable message. Alternatively, if you log off when imprisoned you outright die... No questions asked and no explainations given as to the cause of your untimely demise. Ok, so how do someone arrest another player? First off, there should be a knockdown action (only possible from behind with an audible *thunk* sound) when close to another player as exists in ACE. You can only arrest someone that is knocked down (same as unconscious) and you would use a piece of rope, zip ties or handcuffs to arrest the player with. All with varying strengths, for instance, ropes can be reused but are the easiest to break free from. Zip ties are single use only (and the most common found) but are hard to break free from. Finally, handcuffs are the toughest to break free from and are once again reusable and thus quite rare to find. If the prisoner escaped (without breaking the cuffs/ropes) he gets to keep them for himself. (Obviously not in the case of zip ties) And here is where i add another suggestion to the big picture, add the ability to relieve an arrested/uncounscious player of his weapons so that, in the case of him breaking free, he doesn't automatically get the drop on his captives (unless of course they don't search him properly, then they have themselves to blame for death or whatever) A freed captive who is now (inevitably) unarmed still has the option to knock down other players and return the favor. As a final option, the captive can choose to "give up" and just commit suicide. But doing so would penalize him on his next spawn. Starting with 6,000 blood instead of the default 12,000 As i see it, this solves most problems and allows good guys and pirates/bandits alike to maintain security while still keeping the game enjoyable for the captives. And as i see it, this would make it so you don't have to shoot and expose yourself needlessly and harm/kill other players you don't have any interest in. It also allows a good guy time to move away from the captive and get to a safe distance where the captive won't be able to shoot him in the back. (Obviously you would use zip ties in this case so the captive doesn't get something for free) On a final note, a captive would still be able to ride in the back of vehicles. Walk/run about and eat food/drink water, pick up food/water for consumption and nothing else and would otherwise be at the mercy of his captors. Allowing captured players to be driven to locations around the map. (Taxi service etc) A captives backpack/gear would also still be carried by the prisoner, allowing the captors to place items into it / take items out of it as they please.

Panda, or should I say, Sgt.Hexstatic is not being made to ditch a server. He is not being made to drop UK10 as a community. He is not being told to abandon anyone or anything. He is only being asked to consider his position as an admin of The British Sergeants' Mess. And to justify the comments about our server (hardware) being shit, as you say so easily, after extensive effort and analysis we now believe we have struck the perfect balance against the inherent issues the map may or may not have. 60 to 40 Slots, reduction in vehicles spawns, adjustment of body disappear rates and changes to back up rates to name a few. Anyway, the slaughter continues... familiar players are returning time after time and we battle the hackers with no or little disruption to the honest players. It seems we are doing something right, right? -
This is not entirely true, it is possible to merely have a cough as a warning to being out in the rain, going indoors and taking heatpacks to regen temperature will remove the cough. As someone that runs 10k km in the mountains looking for camps/vehicles I have had this multiple times and never been "sick" needing antibiotics or actually bleeding. I'm familiar with the infected sickness as I have had to gun down my friend twice to prevent infection !!!

Its a dayz bug. The spawn script only executes when a player is within 120m - on foot. The game doesn't recognize vehicles as players, or containing players, so the loot spawn script never gets to execute.

We have our own Team-Speak 3 server and that is where you will have to apply. We are also still deciding on which Map to place our DayZ server. Right now it is Celle but it may possibly be changed. I run the server so we will have two Forward Operating Base's with walls and buildings. A buddy of mine and I are looking for a home server to store our stuff and progress our game in, and generally call home. So far servers that I've been joining have common hackers, or the tents disappear, etc. Are these issues unavoidable, or are there stable enough servers to confidently call home? I'm looking for general tips or discussion on how to search for and choose a home server to house tents, look for vehicles, fortify a base, etc. Please only come with constructive attitudes. There was another topic, but it seemed more concerned with server browsing and favoriting on DayZ Commander. I hope this is original enough for a fresh post. -

Here's something i did way back in the beginning that i never posted, just found it on my hd whilst looking for nude pictures of Steak some metal tunes. Dayz.. a mod for ArmaII/ Operation Arrowhead that has you as a survivor in the middle of zombie apocalypse. Will you keep your humanity and help other survivors or will you tread the bandit path, slaying all in your way in this open enviroment. 225 square kilometres to explore, find gear you will need for survival,go lone wolf,try and team up, avoid or join up with bandits, and of course, kill Zeds. The story is totally yours to make, where you go and what you do is up to you. Average life expectancy ..28 minutes, how long will you survive the Dayz experience.. I wake up on the beach, my head is pounding, vision blurred..sound comes rushing back ...zzzzzzzzZZZOOOMPH! Woah, that was wack, i can hear the surf mere metres away and see that dawn is just breaking. I stand up and shake myself down, pat the sand of my dirty clothes... my gear! I madly grab my backpack and scuffle through..water bottle, shake shake..full, painkillers, flares, bandages, my trusty Makarov pistol with a couple of full clips and ..beans. I polish my gold rimmed aviators, hey, a guy has to have some sort of style, and while thinking of a course of action for the day my mind wanders back... I remember the first time we heard the news story of the crazy drugged out guy in Florida..naked and eating another mans face, taking a bullet round seemingly unaffected..then another chap cutting himself up in an apartment and throwing his skin and intestines at the local police, peppersprayed, unaffected. The net went crazy about the Zombie Apocalypse. As usual the assailants turned up as internet memes within a few days, twisted humour , but this was the instant cyber world we lived in, everything was fair game. The news contained stories of a new drug derived from LSD, ' Bath Salts' . Making people turn into unthinking wild animals basically. A few more random incidents then it all died down and became just another piece of madness in our daily world. The zombie craze faded. A few months later I found myself on a business trip selling outdated laptops and smartphones to a shonky retail chain in Chernarus , the infamous former Soviet state, when the big news hit. America had been overun overnight by madness, people attacking each other in the streets, major rioting , the civilian populace out of control, fighting the police, the government, each other. I watched footage on the plane flight over and could not believe what i was seeing, people on the streets were literally tearing each other apart ! Whole cities were burning, everything had broken down..overfuckingnight! It looked like all of those crappy zombie movies from the 70's. Madness. We landed at a small strip in Balota, east of Chernogrorsk, by then i had seen that Europe , Africa and Asia was also going through the same hell.What the fuck was going on??!! This was no Bath Salts, this was something far larger and out of control, spreading like a wildfire. I needed to find out more, and desperately quickly it appeared. A small group of people were gathered near the hangars all looking at their phones , a larger lady was crying and holding two children whose eyes were wide with fear. I recognised Ivan' one of the aircraft mechanics and noticed he had a small pistol strapped to his belt. Weird. He waved at me and i I was just starting to head over when i heard the sound of an aircraft in the distance off to my left. Approaching the small airport was a light plane, looked like a Technoavia SM-2000. Despite the crazy news i caught myself watching it come in, i had always been a plane nut and the Tech was an odd looking single engined bird that i had only seen in books. She seemed a bit lively..crabbing in , then diving up and down randomly..all of a sudden its engine cut a few feet above the concrete runway. She bounced hard..once..twice, then, the front wheel collapsing , it plowed along sparking on its nose until it slewed to a stop not more than 20 metres beside me. Damn! An already mad day was getting monumental ! I ran towards the crashed plane..tilted up crazily on its bent prop, fuel and oil leaking from its engine. Just as i got to the wingtip the door swung open bashing violently against the fuselage and this abomination looked at me..what ..the..hell ?! His face was ridden with cuts and what looked like small boils or some sort of pox. The cuts were not fresh though, nothing that had just happened in the crash..weird, and his eyes, man his eyes..they were blackly bloodshot and the pupils were small and beady, an off colour i cant describe. In the brief seconds i was rooted to the ground taking this in i saw the pilot slumped over the controls, his neck had chunks missing, one eye lolled out of his socket and on his cheek...i noticed movement in the rear of the cabin..at least three more of these 'things'. Fuck this! Turning and sprinting in the opposite direction, faster than i ever ran at track, coach would have been proud i thought! Bolting past the small group and the crash team who was just pulling up i did not look back until i heard the screaming, these fucked up things had waded straight into the small crowd, swinging ripping,biting, tearing. I saw Ivan draw his pistol and start firing, he offloaded his magazine into one of them that dropped and then was overcome himself. The thing bit into his face and blood spewed out of his forehead, that was more than enough, i hightailed it across the field and onto the outskirts of the small village of Balota, jumping a random goat that had somehow wandered onto the field. That was three days ago and it felt like a year. I had come to call the things 'Zeds' , short for Zombies, i mean c'mon..what else where they ? They ate people..they looked dead. Zombies. Crazy, but here i was..a character in 28 Days Later, The Walking Dead..Zombieland and not a twinkie in sight. Fucked up sideways mental. I was stuck in the middle of who knows what, i didn't really know what was happening outside of my little bubble of apocalyptica, but it was bad.Real fucking eat a dick bad. I had worked my up the coast and roamed the streets of Chernogorsk for a day, raided a small shop and found the only weapon available, a small russian military issue pistol thrown on the floor casually amongst tinned food and a pile of watches, it had become my 'trusty Mak'. I had watched the Zeds become more and more numerous , chasing people through the streets, eating them as they lay screaming on the ground. Panick was rife and more than once i had seen people who had not been killed by the Zeds, full of bullet holes. It did not take long for some people to turn. That same day i killed my first bunch of Zeds, chased by a bunch of them into a building while i was investigating a pile of tin cans randomly strewn with more tinned food near a house, standing back from the doorway blasting away as they filed in and had heaped them up on top off each other with round after round, emptying magazine after magazine. I didnt worry about conserving ammo, it seemed everyone here had had a Mak, i was constantly finding full mags in every second house or building i walked into too. They say America is gun crazy..after visiting Cherno, i beg to differ. I sat on the top of a block of apartments and ate beans and pasta from cans. I scabbed through hotels, pubs, shops, hospitals. I was slowly getting supplies , bandages, painkillers, tins of food. matches and a bigger backpack to carry it all.. i had no idea how long i would be by myself. Would the military come and take these Zeds out? Was it an infection ? Was everyone on these Bath Salts? I suspected the government, one of their projects gone had gone balls up. They fed us crap all the time, fuel prices, needed wars, low pay rates, bad economy..blah blah blah..now Bath Salts ? Made by a couple of punks looking to make a buck and now the world was fubar? Yeh right. Fuck you politicians, i hope they eat you slowly. After a fitfuls night sleep on top of the apartments i made my way via the forest and hills to Elektrozavodsk, one of the highlights of my former visits , the pubs were seedy and the ladies were generally seedier. As i approached i could see things had taken an even more downward turn, vehicles were burnt out in the streets and for some reason someone had taken a disliking to washing machines as what seemed like all of them were thrown recklessly and randomly outside. Strange people these Russians. Then i saw someone ! He was moving slyly between buildings, a bandana of some sort on his head and large pack on his back. He stayed low and moved into the church ..alert, definitely not a Zed. I nearly flipped! A real live person ! He even had a pair those poofy looking red Oakleys on ! I watched him enter then looked around for Zeds, none i could see so i bolted down the hill through a field, stopped at some buildings to gather my breath, still no zeds. Quickly across the street and into the church, he was down on the floor, kneeling picking up a Mak mag, how surprising. In my excitement i blurted out.. ' Holy crap dude, are you a sight for sore eyes! ' He jumped up, pistol in hand and started blasting away at me, FUCK ! I ducked and ran out the door, shots cracking plaster off the walls all around me ! Trigger happy little fella but he couldn't shoot straight for squat. Must have been his crap choice in sunglasses. The noise attracted the Zeds and i saw two bolting up a street to my right. Damn ! Three more coming from the left, running hard and grunting.Trigger's shooting would bring everything within a block down on me. I pumped my legs into a long gray nondescript three story building and vaulted halfway up a flight of stairs, checked my clip was full and placed three more down beside me, settled my breathing. Half a minute later and i had seven deader than dead Zeds laying on the floor in front of me, i was starting to become a pretty proficient marksman. Five of the Zeds i had just dropped were headshots. Shooting like a boss as we used to say when playing crappy fps games. I loaded a fresh clip , waited for my heart to stop racing, made sure Trigger was not coming in and then headed up the stairs. Checking five trashed rooms i added four more Mak clips to my backpack and a can of sardines, sweet, they would taste like a five star meal later. The last room i looked in had an axe on the floor..shiny and new. I had given up wondering why i continued to find weird shit laying around, i simply jammed the small Mak into my pocket and hefted the axe..good weight, and the wood smelt nice, reminded me of my pops place in the mountains where we used to spend weekends fishing and cooking fat trout on an open fire. I used to pretend it was just me and pop, the bush and the wildlife. nobody else in the world , now it seemed nearly true. I could see myself causing some serious carnage with this axe and not having to worry about alerting the whole neighbourhood while i hacked away silently. It seemed i already had the mindset of that freaky Michael Myers fucko from the Halloween series..fuk yeh, come at me bro. From the top floor i surveyed the Church , five minutes went past and i never saw Trigger, he was either laying low inside, being dined on or had already left while i was plugging Zeds. I exited on the opposite side i had come in and worked my way up past a bunch of houses stopping at the corner of one and looked across into a field. Before me was what looked like a power station about 100 metres away, a large hill behind it, looked like a perfect place to overwatch the town. Something moved close by.. what do you know, there was Trigger, cautiously crouching along with his back to me, not five metres away he exited a small grove of bushes. I made a snap decision and started stalking him..4 metres..3.....2.....now! I axed him a question, directly into the base of his neck. Down went Trigger with a small grunt and a large amount of spurting blood. I hefted the axe once more and split the back of his head wide open. Before i even knew what i was doing i was pulling the axe out of his flesh and bone and rifling through his small backpack..compass, a crumpled map and some more beans. I stripped him of his watch and also scored a knife he had hitched to a small toolbelt, sweet. I then dragged his body under a tree out of view. I stood up and nearly keeled over as my vision darkened, my heart was pumping like a locomotive, i could feel it busting against my ribcage, hands shaking so badly that i had to grip the axe until my knuckles were white for fear of dropping it, blood was all over me, still warm and mixing with the sweat that was draining out of me. I was a killer. Every detail in the woodgrain handle of the axe stood out as i looked down at my hands, every hair on my arms seemed as if under a microscope and i could see how badly i had been chewing my nails unthinkingly during the day. I had killed. Staring at my victim i thought it was strange how things look when they have no life, you can see the finality, as if they never where. I felt as much remorse in that moment as i ever had in my life. Like the first time i shot a small bird, winging it with a small calibre rifle and then having to chase it for nearly two miles as it hopelessly flitted from tree to tree getting lower and slower, life draining out of it but needing to stay alive. Finally hitting it again and then sitting down by myself with this small animal needlessly shot. The excitement of shooting a gun gone, the weapon feeling like lead in my hands, knowing i would never kill again. I knew what i had just done was different, and that i would do it again if need be, it could be me laying under the tree..and i wasn't ready to punch out just yet. Looking around from under the cover of the low branching tree i could Zeds dragging themselves along the ground, not appearing to see me, it was like the highschool prom all over again, the zeds were the hotchicks and i was the guy shuffling quietly in the corner invisible. I moved low and slowly past them. At a distance of about seven or so metres they seemed nearly blind if you were quiet and not moving fast. I worked my way up into the treeline a small distance from Elektro, the Zeds did not seem to like the wooded areas, congregating instead close to man made structures. Maybe they still had some sort of instinctual humanity left, nobody liked the woods when alone and especially not in the dark, possibly even the Zeds. I on the other hand loved it and felt at home when surrounded by the forest and the inky blackness, maybe it could offer a safe haven. From what i did know of the region i was in there was a major airfield further North but i did not have the provisions to make a journey that far, yet. I wanted to head up there eventually , try for a working set of wheels first, and hopefully get my hands on some better weaponry, there was an airforce prescence at the airport so there had to be some serious deathware tucked away. For the moment though i would head along the coast, have a look around and see if i could get any more goodies for my trip. I would also like to make contact with some people and form a group, watch each others backs and fight the Zeds instead of each other, every passing minute in this new world tells me to stay alone and observe, but would i go mad by myself ? Should I just stay a loner ? at least i know where the Zeds stand, people are another matter. For now i head down to a pond, fill my water bottle, head across a small heavily forested hill and make my way to the beach near a lighthouse that splits the two towns, i decide against spending the night in the concrete walls of the tall structure, it seems a far too obvious place. On the edge of the beach under a thick grove of bushes i dig down in the sand so i can sit with just my head in view, thick grass pulled out to conceal my body. I eat my cold sardines and start drifting off as the sun disappears ...wondering what the next few dayz will bring.
