Absolutely. I'm not pissed at all that they were trying to kill me on sight.. and I'm certainly not an advocate for trying to get that mentality out of the game. The only thing I was irked at was the combat logging/server ghosting shit. The encounter legitimately ended in a total stalemate and that's how it should have ended. Instead the player(s) in question felt the need to abuse the current system to end it on their terms.

beyond fail.. add a timer that will not allow you to rejoin a server for 5-10 minutes. would suck if you have crap internet but would get rid of people ghosting around. had a guy do it to me..spawned near me instantly logged..heard him re load in downstairs. also need a way to keep combat logging out.
-
What he means is to prevent ghosting, only allowing spawning in woods. I think. Which = fail.

Allow private hives, but with regulations and licenses....
gibonez replied to muggerfugger (DayZ)'s topic in General Discussion
Yea thats one area I hope does not go into effect. Private hives need to be completely cut off from the public hive. Loot from private hives should never make it into public hives and vice versa. Same applies to player location each should retain their own player location so ghosting, combat logging, server hopping is only a problem in public hives not private. -
Sure you could. 15/30 Logout timer[You can't find a place to logout to stand for 30 sec? Then don't logout outside of Pine Trees.] -This could fix Combat Loggin pretty much Some kind of 15 minute lock system, that I saw suggtested in another topic. -This could fix ghosting and Server hopping to an extent. http://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/topic/157862-server-hop-ghosting-solution/ Now I'd personally hate to see the SA turn out like the MOD - I attempted to try and re-kindle my DayZ feeling some months before DayZ SA Alpha Release. This was impossible due to all the bullshit private hives out there, it was(is) almost impossible to find a good public hive server xD Anyway, I'm sure that the fact DayZ uses a public hive is one of the reasons it became so popular. If it had in fact only had a tons of small servers with individual characters so you only could play with your toon on one server it'd have been less popular.

The main problem with Private Hives was the ability to change loot, number of vehicles, custom loadouts etc. It destroyed the game for many. Not to mention donator perks. Hopefully SA can resolve server hopping/ghosting somewhat by logging players logout/login history and making login timers when hopping occurs (i have heard Rocket mention exponential waiting times when you logout/login repeatedly)

Nice story, I do hope Combat logging/Ghosting is fixed soon :( . Anyway, enjoy some :beans:

Probably not worthy of a new thread but I'm going to post anyway. Earlier today I was exploring some of the new areas with a friend. We were at that new area north of Chernogorsk with the tall apartment buildings and he decided to provide overwatch from a somewhat nearby building with a Mosin and a badly damaged scope (great idea!) while I looted the two super markets in Dubky. After a relatively unsuccessful trip I started to make my way back across the field when all of a sudden I heard a very sharp and VERY LOUD crack of a bullet whizzing by my head. In Mumble I laugh and ask my friend, "Was that you?" (thinking he was just messing with me) Before he could answer all of a sudden there was a BARRAGE of gunfire from the south. Bullets hitting all around me. I'm yelling "Shit! Shit! I'm taking a ton of fire!" (Pic of initial contact. My friend is on the roof to the northern most building) I turn 180 degrees and look for any cover at all. All I see is that patch of trees and I zig zag my way through them.. all the while bullets are whizzing by my head and hitting the ground all around me. I'm yelling "There's at least two of them! Holy shit for the love of God give me cover fire!" And he's like "Dude I can't fucking see them. Where are they!?" While running I hold alt and turn to look behind me and I see one of them crossing the road to try and flank me. "One of them is on the road trying to flank just below you!". At this point my screen is completely washed out and the gunfire stopped after I lose them in the trees. I quickly bandage myself and finish up just as one of them starts firing again. I somehow manage to not get shot despite taking what seems like forever to stand up from a crouching position to retreat back to these apartment buildings: I get into the building and make my way to the 4th floor and look out the window. My friend finally has visual on both of them heading north. It seems as though they gave up the hunt.. but then my friend decides to try and take them out. He misses and they turn around and stay huddled in the bushes just north of my buddy's position. He starts laying down fire to keep them pinned in that location as I make my way to flank: I am now within maybe 20 yards of them hiding behind a tree.. unfortunately these guys were very twitchy DayZ players. They would CONSTANTLY move.. back and forth back and forth. They literally did not stop moving. Felt like I was watching someone play Unreal or something, haha. So I slowly made my way up to a bush within just FEET of them and one of them decides to run out into the field. I have a pretty good view of him so I shoot him about 4 times in the chest and he goes down. HIs friend immediately starts back tracking and looking for me. I look back at the first bandit and he's already getting up. He was just unconscience and apparently only for a moment. I put another couple rounds in him and then I have no choice but to assume/hope he died and start worrying about his friend. We circle some bushes and I say to him "Hey hey hey.. let's not shoot eachother okay? let's just stop." .... no answer ... he round the bush and I try and put the remaining shots of my clip into him but I only had one shot left.. *clickclickclick*... shit... I try and run away and he puts me down.. seconds later he puts the finishing bullet into my head and I die. My friend chronicles the conclusion of the firefight over mumble for me as I begin collecting gear from scratch at Chernogorsk. They make their way into the building and get to the final ladder up to the roof and they start yelling at him to come down.. my friend tells them to come up (lol).. this goes out for about 5 minutes or so and then silence. My friend was like "Shit.. he's probably ghosting to another server.. let me go and put myself in a corner so they don't flank me".. and he turns around to get a good position and he runs right into the guy... who teleported right behind him (via ghosting to another server) and kills him. Such a lame ending to an otherwise great encounter. Long story short... the adrenaline I felt as bullets whizzed by me as I'm being absolutely barraged by gunfire was fucking amazing and the ensuing fight and general encounter was really fun! But overall left a bad taste in our mouths since in the end they ended up "winning" because one of them abused the system rather than just accepting the stalemate. -_-

"Private" gear farming servers are now a thing
Lowbi replied to AmirDayz's topic in General Discussion
yes. fixed server characters as a server option would fix numerous douche moves. such as ghosting (switching servers to move behind a player then logging back in to flank them), server hop loot farming and also combat logging, since they couldnt log back in until the player left. that may take a bit, depending how pissed the other player is about it. i know some people who would stick around waiting for them for hours. theres gotta be a better term for it than "fixed-server characters"... maybe uhhh... "locals only" - no out of towners/server hoppers ? -
I really agree with the OP! Beans for that :D In my opinion quite a nice solution, but we have to consider the reason for lootcycling... The solution works great to prevent combat logs and ghosting, but i guess the main reason for a lot of casuals(me included ;) ) to do server hopping is to find loot. The feeling to play 3-4h and to find NOTHING on a server does not contribute to a good experience and so I found myself lootcycling, only to get some necessary stuff to survive...On the other hand, if I found a recently restarted one, I got everything I need in about 30 mins. The solution the OP mentioned is good, but there needs to be solutions for the lootspawningsystem aswell, or casuals will just stop playing at this point. We all want a hard game, but it shouldn´t be necessary to play a whole day only to find an axe...^^ We should never forget the reasons for things like this, because they are by no means random :D
-
The solution already exists. The combat timer/log out timer from the mod of about 30 secs combined with the cooldown period to switch servers from breaking point. This eliminates ghosting and makes server hopping for loot very inconvenient. Of course you can always alt tab out or close your program, but then you should be left in game for 30 secs or whatever the countdown timer is. Something like this, well the cool down timer between servers, probably wont be implemented until they figure out loot re-spawns since server hopping isn't completely unjustified

Too many post about it. If its not about combat loggers, its about ghosting. Simple move on, dont hang around......welcome to Alpher =)

Please make sure Zombies are fixed before you buff them.
Target Practice (DayZ) replied to ThirdSinger's topic in General Discussion
Well obviously they need to be fixed before the game moves onto beta. What I (and although I can't speak for him, I assume Max) am trying to say is that in the current state of the SA, it's a very minor issue. Other issues like getting the zombie numbers up to an acceptable level, getting them respawning properly and then getting all the various other systems in place have to take priority over a bit of 'ghosting'. It's the same with server hopping. No-one's denying it's an issue, it's just not a priority right now, so it'll be tackled once some of the bigger problems have been solved and it moves up the list a few notches. -
if server crash you can change straight away no penalty :| or you wait 5 minute for going online again same one ;) only guys who have problem are guys who want to swap server regular in short time period ask you why they need to change server regular in short times period? because they ghosting or doing loot cycle >:( ghosting hurt too many player, for sure most player maybe every player die multiple time from bastard snipers who swapping server look for victim >:( dayz is not game you doing quick fix 5 minute play one hour is nothing in dayz every guy get free server hop every hour, if you don't like server move, but after wait for next one ;)

What about two people playing in the same area in two different servers. One spots enemy, relays enemy location to other person, other person relocates to ideal ghosting spawn spot, then logs into the other server.
-
Yup ghosting at its finest, Btw when you fix your broken leg you need to relog for your char to walk again its a known bug,

It's all planned, anti-combat logging, anti-server hopping, anti-ghosting, discussing if it should or shouldn't be in is pointless, people like to be a hero and suggest how they think it should be done, even if most have no idea on what is involved in game development and game design specifically, just the way things are. I do agree though, a 10 second timer is way too short, hence my previous post on how I would handle it(or at least what I would try out first): http://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/topic/157862-server-hop-ghosting-solution/page-2#entry1585019 Yep, another "hero suggestion", though I actually have a bit of background in game development, not to say my way is great, but its the way I would handle it, banning as a replacement for a game mechanic is not how things should be handled.

Would this simultaneously fix Server Hopping and Ghosting?
Shadyfizzle replied to ZedsDeadBaby's topic in General Discussion
What it should be is similar to the mod where there is a logout timer and a combat timer, there should also be a timer between switching servers(like 5-10 mins), like in breaking point. This would eliminate ghosting as it would take 10 minutes to switch to another server to move into better position then 10 minutes to switch back. Server hopping for loot would be more inconvenient as it would take longer to do. Combat logging or otherwise improper exiting of the server should leave your character in game for 30 secs or whatever the combat/logout timer is. if this has already been proposed it is because it is a good idea, there will never be "safe" zones in dayz -
Every player starts with a kit to make a small campfire (different from regular campfire) you can't cook with this campfire, but both campfires allow you to log out. Otherwise you cannot exit the game until you have your small campfire or regular campfire up. Any player can log out next to a lit campfire. When you light a campfire, it makes a fireplace sound so everyone knows you're attempting to log out. Then have a 30 second timer. So, you're in a firefight in a city. you corner a guy into a house. you hear the campfire lit. now you know he's either faking it or logging out within 30 seconds. otherwise you don't have to push the envelope and you know he's still in there. Tada. As for server hopping just make it to where if they log out they spawn outside the city in a ring like other posters have suggested. This also prevents ghosting so people can't spawn in behind a cleared building and surprise you thus ruining any tactical advantage a group has in clearing an area. The only hiccup to this small fire is how do you get it back in your inventory if you log out and appear away from the campfire? I'm sure a developer could get around this in a number of ways, but one of them would be to have it as a button in game that doesn't even take up any spaces for a lighter/wood and just automatically is the defacto "log out" button.

Combat Logging/Server Hopping Brainstorm Thread
BelMarduk replied to atmaca (DayZ)'s topic in General Discussion
all thats needed is a logout timer. One that starts when you hit ESC of a simple 20 seconds. You can still dc immediately (if you know you are in a 'safe' area and it wouldn't matter) or wait for the timer to completely run down (if you're not in an entirely 'safe' area but want the ability to still react if needed before the timer runs out). Either way an avatar of your char remains for the entire timer duration. Ad to that a combat timer, engage (or be engaged) and 30 seconds are added to the amount of time your avatar remains. The avatar IS you, you're just not controlling him, to be killed and looted as seen fit. Why this do you ask? well, it keeps people from combat logging to save their ass, yet allows you to (relatively) safely logout quickly if needed. You'll can never actually log out as bullets are flying around you. A log out sound (like the log in sound) might be something, although, really only connect/dc messages can really mitigate 'ghosting'. -
Server Hopping/Combat logging-How it ruins the Dayz experience
jBrick replied to Hero of Suburbia's topic in General Discussion
Well... that is the main issue with a game that has linked servers. This isn't what I would call "Server Hopping" though its what I call "Ghosting" and on my DayZ Mod server it was a bannable offense. Ghosting is cheating. Unfortunately with how loot is dispersed right now server hopping is going to be a way of life until its changed. I literally cannot find anything on a server sometimes and it practically forces me to switch to a server that's been restarted recently. That's just reality of loot spawn @ server startup. That being said though... maybe only allowing people to log out in a forest or area away from a city / town would be beneficial at the moment. -
Would this simultaneously fix Server Hopping and Ghosting?
superkyle replied to ZedsDeadBaby's topic in General Discussion
I absolutely LOVE this idea. PLEASE devs at least consider this. The inconvenience it might cause severely aids in ghosting, server hopping and combat logging. So a team cant lock down a city (at least on the outskirts), big deal, it aids in everything else. -
You should select a home server on starting a character. This server you will automatically connect to, to switch servers you need to change homeservers which should be a 10 minute or so process. This prevents server hopping, ghosting, and creates a reason to stay tied to servers. The only issue would be if your home server is full :/ I'm sure there could be a good solution for that. But I think that should be added in eventually to solve a lot of issues.

Combat Logging/Server Hopping Brainstorm Thread
SmashT replied to atmaca (DayZ)'s topic in General Discussion
They are all pretty easily solved. Rocket has talked about some of these before too so I have no doubts we will see something similar implemented at some point in the alpha. Combat logging - Players bodies remain in-game for 30 seconds or so after they log out. Ghosting is also easy with a global hive. If you log out of a server you should not be able to rejoin that server again for say 30 minutes IF you have logged into another server since. Simple tracking of the last, say 5, server IP's, each as a 32bit hash, then current hash and compare. After 30 mins of play on the current server then history list is flushed to conserve space and reset the calculation. Server Hopping for loot is a variant of the above except it stops you logging into ANY other server for 15 mins if you have joined 3 servers in the last 30 mins or alternatively a timeout timer is doubled every time you switch servers - maybe the first switch has no wait, the second 2 minutes, third 8 minutes etc. -
How about a Sleeping System in order to save Character?
Karmaterror replied to gorillaCHEEZ's topic in General Discussion
Theres no problem for if you have to log quickly....theres hundreds of enterable houses with beds that you could just run to....wait the few seconds while you fall asleep then log out. I really like this idea, adds immersion and completly stops combat logging. Also helps against server hoppers if it takes say 15 secs to go asleep....then should take 15 to wake up and get outa the bed. So if you did it in the baracks then as you wake theres 15 seconds for the player thats there to react. Maybe even make em yawn when they wake as an audiable que to the player that someone logged on really close and will be combat ready within the next 15 seconds. This idea would acctually make me want to play public servers more, iv always gone for private hives because of ghosting server hopping. This is the first time youl see me say id like to play on pub servers and its this idea that makes me want to! have some beans!
