To those who dislike the new combat logging timer
musketeer replied to africanhungergames's topic in General Discussion
I would agree with this, because it stops the issue of ghosting, but doesn't make you vulnerable completely when you log out. -
Ghosting and loot hopping is still the same! 1) I could loot the airfield on a low populated server for 30 mins then instantly switch and repeat. 2) I could see a guy sniping on top of green mountain tower, I change server climb up the ladder, wait 5 mins, change back to previous server and shoot him in the back. The wait timer should be progressive doubling the amount of time every time you switch server no matter how long you've been on a server, which resets back to 5mins every 4hrs. So as in the green mountain scenario it would take 15minutes to ghost. And server hopping just wouldn't be worth doing after you've switched server once or twice because the wait timer would get too long.
-
While combat logging will be dealt a severe blow, I fear that ghosting will still remain as a serious problem. * Sorry, but I doubt people will care about a 2min timer to jump between servers, people generally wait that long for a game on LOL.

Wouldn't it be nice though, if people just weren't such pussies. I'm finding this trend in online gaming, across all games, not just DayZ and that is that there are more people playing a game to try and piss off the other people playing the game than there are players playing the game because they like and enjoy it. Why that ended up in this thread? I don't know, just throwing it out there. Now something a little more on topic. Let's face it, even if a player isn't server hopping or ghosting he or she can still end up with an unfair advantage when logging in for the day/night. People can pop in out of nowhere at any time and it doesn't matter if it's right next door to you or 200m away, they weren't there 5 mins ago, but they are there now. What can be done about it? You have to let people login whenever they want and at the same spot they logged off. So what I suggest is to have a bit of an environmental alarm in the form of a loud, unique zombie growl play any time a player logs in within 100-200 meters of your location. That way it's something that still fits within the environment while being a loud enough sound to be heard a fair distance away. This zombie growl would not indicate the direction or distance the player is from you, but just as a heads up that there is a new threat to worry about somewhere in the surrounding area. The growl should sound pretty far way, echoing from over the hills, so that an area that is cleared of zombies doesn't have some unrealistic invisible zombie yapping away. I thin this would also be a great way of instilling fear among players, like in the case of a lone survivor looting a way when suddenly hearing 3 consecutive blood curdling howls. Oh shit! And yes, the players logging in would also hear the screams, so they too know they are not alone.

I have had alot of problem with this in experimental build, seems if we log out to early or fast if you will, you get roll backed abit. Very irritating but i belive it's for ghosting and serverhopping

I really, really hope a lot of combat loggers don't read the change log, feeling super secure while committing their combat logging/ ghosting while I shoot their suddenly moveless body. Hurray!

DayZ Standalone Hacker Caught on Video - 100% Proof

Looks like he was ghosting and combat logging to me. -
Of all the "ideas" suggested to combat server hopping and combat logging / ghosting... This is by far the worst. Random spot on the map? IMMERSION............................. No. Awful idea, sorry. I'm pretty sure you made a thread about this and I think I posted the same reply there. Bad. Idea.

Pending Changelog: Experimental Branch: 0.33.114782
simplicity replied to rocket's topic in News & Announcements
Hoarding is not possible with server hopping and ghosting. In other words, you can be safe defending your camp/base till small group of attackers hop through few servers and spawn just in the middle of your camp/base. (Surprise mother$&@%#*!!!) -
ok, so theres server hopping, combat logging, ghosting. and now fathers gearing up their sons character!!!!???? Son, I have some bad news for you. I'm going to make another KOS thread.

Keeping the coast clear of bandits and suspicious characters that don't listen
thelonewarrior replied to thelonewarrior's topic in Gallery
Ok I'm going to have to explain this for the who can't understand each thing that happened Guy number 1 We hear shots, find some new spawn bodies As I'm looking around he stands up on the silo aiming at me, I circle around and tell him to come down No response, starts shooting Classic signs of a camping bandit Guy number in the trees opens fire, kills 1 of us, we kill him, he's a KOS bandit Next guy appears nearby and loots the body, we tell him to drop his weapons and he refuses, if we were bandits we would have just shot him Next guy logs in RIGHT at the body and then logs out and logs in nearby, ghosting us but we spot him, take his gun and leave it nearby He then follows us with a friend, attacks one of my guys (off camera) and the runs and we still let him go The guy who surrenders does not respond after a while, we gave him a chance to live and keep his gun and ammo but he acted suspicious and stopped responding, it's his own fault he died At solnichny a fully geared player runs up to 3 newspawns and opens fire, a loser bandit hunting people on the coast which we then kill and the newspawns scatter, he was a bandit I secure the body for a friend who is also a newspawn when a guy runs up Of course I'm going to tell him to leave the bodies alone, there are loaded guns on them that I didn't have time to remove before he showed up He then goes to loot the guns AFTER I told him not to, do you really want me to wait until he picks up a guns and starts shooting? His intentions were clearly hostile The guys in elektro were shooting newspawns from the rooftops so we killed them, they were also server hoppers and ghosting us We never once did any of the following bandit activities: We didn't KOS We didn't rob anyone We only killed those that were confirmed bandits or we suspected of foul play ( the guy who went silent could have been talking to friends on teamspeak and he had a loaded gun, do you expect us to let him wait while we run away so he can shoot at is?) We lay down the law, I've been playing this for nearly 2 years now and you can look up all my videos which you clearly haven't We are friendly and lay down the law, you bet ya that anyone not lowering their weapon or putting it away after being warned will get shot You expect us to just sit there and let them wave their gun around? We have committed no banditry, we are vigilantes, laying down a non KOS law If you think this is banditry, how exactly do you expect people to combat bandits? Disarm themselves and sing to them until they shoot you or the log off? Ask them nicely to lay down those arms and join in a group hug? No, we combat bandits head on and take the fight to them -
Well done combat loggers and Server hoppers!
pilgrim* replied to Z0mbi3z's topic in New Player Discussion
In the mod people stayed with one (or 2) servers because of vehicles and tents. So this server hopping will die down in a while. It won't be different to what it was it was in the mod. No one complained except about script cheats. 30 sec log would discourage ghosting, or make it a possible disadvantage to try to ghost in a fight, instead of only an unfair advantage. That's good. The 'no combat log' worked well in the mod for what it was designed to do, except it glitched sometimes. A 30 sec log out would be great if you could press "log out" and leave the game after 30 secs as long as you did not do anything. If you do an action to countermand the logout, you're back in the game - this gives you a chance to react if something happens, or at least you know why you died. So sitting down to log out is not a bad idea, you can still see what's happening but not do anything, and you have 30 seconds to change your mind about logging, till the timer runs out. pilgrim -
Thanks guys for your responses, was my first proper firefight and I combat logging did cross my mind but I thought no this is the game. I was trying to escape but there wasn't much cover. I did get him in the end and got his scope. Didn't feel bad at all! Didn't realise this was ghosting. Can't wait for fixes
-
Implement a queue system for servers and have your character bound to the server (perhaps only do this if and when they reach the goal of 150ppl servers). Ghosting & loothopping solved. Increase the 30 sec. logout timer to maybe 2 minutes with the option to watch and cancel and combat logging is a thing of the past too. Don't give me the 'nowhere is safe in chernarus' argument, I've hidden a bus in the mod that was still there the next day and yes that was a pretty populated server.
-
I don't see how you guys think a 5 minute log in delay is going to solve ghosting. Even in a normal engagement people can wait upwards of 15 minutes for someone to make a move.
-
Ghosting is lame, but the fact is you played poorly. As soon as you saw the guy log you should have moved.
-
Dont worry buddy there will soon be a 5 minute timer slapped on people who do this. Its called ghosting, now 30 seconds is not a lot but that timer is actually how long you stay in the game for after you log out but what has been discussed in a lot less detail is the 5 minute timer if you swap server too quickly and other stuff. Imagine if that man had to wait five or maybe 10 minutes, (joining another server and then joining yours again) I am pretty sure that will be sufficient enough for you and will make most of these kind of shitty things not worth doing in the future and i cant wait. :P
-
What have you seen that says it's going to be fixed? There is going to be a log out timer for your player to chill in game for 20-30 seconds, but that isn't going to stop most people from ghosting like this. Just means they get to cover first and it takes an extra 30 seconds. Most people hang around an area a lot longer than that so plenty of time to ghost flank.
-
Yeah this whole GHOSTING thing is a real problem.... I am not sure how to alleviate the issue.
-
The current implementation of the logout timer is trollish.

Current SystemYou find a safe place (a fallacy, there are no safe places in dayz)You assess the surroundings and determine you would most likely stay alive for the next 30secsyou press escape and choose exityou are now looking at the main menu.your character is still in game sitting down for the next 30secs. Does It Stop Combat LoggingYes. Does it stop Ghosting? No Does it stop Loot Hopping? No Are there negative side effects?Yes. Improved System Ok, So now that I've sufficiently twisted your panties and wound you up for a tear streaming session, lets talk about how it should happen. Prevent Server Hopping & Prevent Ghosting Switching server(or server group) within X hours of joining current server(or server group) results in : you being moved to a random location on the mapThat location will not be near other players or high value loot locations.Switching Server after X hours, results in :You remaining in the same location The benefits of this are Loot Hoppers will be facing a far amount of time running to new high value loot locations each time they change Ghosters will find that they are now facing a long trek to attempt their "flanking" manuvure. The downsides arePlayers performing a quick legitimate server change will find themselves in new locations. Prevent Combat LoggingYou find a safe place (a fallacy, there are no safe places in dayz) ensure you are not in a status of combat. You assess the surroundings and determine you would most likely stay alive for the next 30secs You press escape and choose exit Your character is sitting down for the next 30secs watching a timer. At this point you are only able to stand back up or move your head. Head movement will not cancel the logout timer process. Standing or clicking the cancel button will cancel the logout process. Someone finds you before the timer ends? move and defend yourself. simple. logout prevented. You will then be in combat for the next 60secs. Can it be abusedNo. Don't agree with me? provide an example of how it can be abused. There is a group of people that hate the idea that someone logging out can cancel the logout and defend themselves. The only reason I can think of that someone wouldn't like that is because it means they can't catch people in the process of logging out undefended.- 162 replies

Well done combat loggers and Server hoppers!
djporternz replied to Z0mbi3z's topic in New Player Discussion
Because that won't deal with the Ghosting/Server Jumping for loot cases. The currently trialed system in the Exp build fixes all of these at the same time. Plus this way, we get to use the F3 Sit animation as a tactic. Think about it! -
so i had a blast so far but this is killing my fun
brumey replied to brumey's topic in General Discussion
this whole telporting and ghosting reminds me of the lagstabs in dark souls! -
Gotta say I would have preferred a Logout Timer as a way to directly punish ghosting and combat logging, but I'm not against this idea. It will get annoying on days when my internet kicks the bucket and I have to jump around to try and find one that I can stay connected to, but oh well.

Server Hopping. Combat Loging. Ghost?
IkaikaKekai replied to colbykid's topic in New Player Discussion
Server hopping is when you go to a high value loot area, loot it, then change to another server to loot it again, usually to get fully geared. It's generally considered cheating/bad sportsmanship. Combat logging is when you log out as soon as you're under attack in order to avoid being killed. Also considered cheating/bad sportsmanship. Ghosting is a bit harder to explain so I'll use an example: You're inside a building, I see you through the door and you shoot at me but miss. I get out of the way, log out, then go to another server. After I load I move to where you were, usually behind you, then jump back onto the original server to kill you. Again considered cheating/bad sportsmanship.
