Today I discussed about open world zombie survival gaming (of course inspired by DayZ) and gender issues with a friend of mine and we both were of the opinion, that it is kind of strange that the overwhelming majority of people who play zombie survival games are men, while the Walking Dead Series is a viewer magnet for women too. http://www.adweek.com/news/television/gory-raunchy-and-bro-filled-tv-series-are-hit-women-147503 http://comicsbeat.com/facebook-demographics-the-walking-dead-not-all-media-are-created-equal/ "Walking Dead fans are 59.38% male and 40.63% females." So I was wondering: What is different? Of course there are couple of obvious arguments. DayZ is focussed on weapons and vehicles, the social component has only marginal impact and when it is not lasting. This is probably one of many reasons, why the DayZ concept and the concept of ALL other open world zombie survival games can't reach a bigger female (or in general wider social) audience and attracts rather the military-simulation and survival-kind of player. That seems to change slowly but steady since I personally know people who play DayZ for other reasons, like roleplaying. So why are the needs and demands of certain social groups not answered yet in that part of the game industry? Do you think it has to do anything with the general (rather male) gaming culture alone or the violent gaming content? Is there at least a way you can think of, to close the gap between social gaming and the zombie survival genre and why is no Indie Company interested in closing it so far? Is this topic a dead end in your opinion? Are risks to high? Can you think of a way or have you ever wanted someone to find a way to make survival gaming a more social experience, or is that kind of contradictory? Or would you say the reasons for the lack of gender (and social) balance are of different nature and if so, could you please elaborate your point? I - personally - think it is very sad that zombie survival and common social gaming don't find a common ground for I would embrace it immediately. For me this would enhance everything, I understand that people feel different, they want this rough and unforgiving experience and it seems quite natural that humans become monsters themselves outside law-and-order, but on the other hand I think walking dead (especially the telltale series) proves very well that gaming can be VERY rough and social at the same time. Sure, storytelling is different from open world gaming, but is there really no way to merge these two trends? Ps.: English is my third language, please don't judge.

    Is the DayZ Mod better than Standalone?

    I'd say over all the mods are 100x ahead of dayZ SA *IN ITS CURRENT STATE* A few simple thing that really make it better imho; the mod has many Sub-Mods made by the community to cater to different desires. Overwatch for pure PvP, Epoch for group play/bases, and origin/DayZero for a more refined version of the original.Vehicles. Vary heavily by which mod you play. there is everything from some private hives with a bijillion everything including jets and tanks, to the "official" mod with just a few civie rides, and everything inbetween.Storage. again varies by mod and server. in official we have tents. some others like epoch offer safes, lock boxes, caches, etc many of which survive character death allowing you to keep a permanent "stash"I do hope for the SA to get up to snuff but in its current state there is zero reason to do anything but KOS on the spawn areas as there's no lasting storage methods, No vehicles, no bases, nothing that would encourage or require a team effort to achieve.

    Vote no because I also find it better solution to have all vehicles accessible to everyone. It is really easy to hotwire old cars so making them inaccessible by locking door and taking key would not add much to realism. You could do it but it would be easy to access it without key.

    I have an idea for vehicles for Dayz Standalone that Dayz Epoch gave me. A player should be able to lock his/her vehicle (A player would get the key from using a key maker kit on their car.) If that vehicle is locked when the player logs out, it will spawn with them in the same location when entering another server or rejoining the server. If your vehicle is not locked when you leave the server, it will stay in that server and not de-spawn. If you are killed before being able to lock your vehicle, the killer can take the key from your body and claim your vehicle for themselves by locking it. Players can lockpick (from a lockpick item which would be very rare) your car to unlock it, then make a key for themselves and lock your vehicle, making it theirs. That way, players cannot just leave their vehicles laying around without fear of someone taking it. You should also be able to force handcuffed people to get into your car (Maybe you could put them in the trunk so they can't see where you're driving?) Anyway, those are my suggestions. Thoughts?

I would really like it if someone were to compile me a Mission and server.pbo for my new server, I have tried so many times so set some up, But I am completely new to coding.   8. Welcome to the XS42 DayZ Taviana Epoch server. XS42 has evolved from map to map and finally we finished with Taviana. Here I have wrote a small list of some of the features that our server offers: Wicked AI side missions with Sarge AI added in the near future God mode and anti backpack trader zones Self bloodbag Vehicle rearm, repair, & refuel locations.     Save The Trees Man! Marginalized Wilderness

    I've given beans to a lot of comments on this thread because I always thought 'real wilderness' was an important part of the gameplay in the vanilla mod, right from the start. I know people who had groups of tents (3 or 5 tents and even vehicles) hidden away for many months without them ever being found. I spent a lot of time in solo play hunting helicopter bases, when I knew someone was flying a heli, and they were being very careful to follow difficult routs back to their base. This was good game play. It's true it WAS possible to find stashes and tents, especially looking from a distance away with binocs, so you saw the ground as flat and brown.. but it was still a skill, you had to know the land, it still took time, mainly because there was a LOT of wild woodland to cover. I enjoyed all this aspect of the game and I know many other players who were 'mainly' solo and they did and enjoyed the same.. it was POPULAR.. it changed the game. And some - many - of those solo players were bandits and snipers and did not spend their time in the backwoods, they were in town and dangerous, in the thick of it.. but they also had a quiet place they could reach when they wanted to. My own first spawn priority in the mod was to find - an axe, matches, a knife, a bottle or empty can, 2 bandages - (that's ALL - the minimum survive-anywhere kit): Then I knew I could live anyplace on the map - stay away from towns completely if I wanted to. Hunt, make fires, cook, boil water (no risk of infection), and then go back to civilization when I needed extra stuff: bandages, weapons, backpack, antibiotics, compass, whatever. Or go into town or NWAF just for the fun and the excitement. I (boast) was good at moving through trees, watching my back, observing from cover without being seen, crossing country in dead ground, knowing the map, and staying off the roads. Put up a tent somewhere far away, or a stash, well hidden, and you are set up for gameplay. Maybe you will live for SEVERAL days instead of the 4.2 hours lifetime it claimed on the mod page. Maybe even a week or 2 or more. The 'humanity' points, and then the score book was a nice plus. NOW so much of the wilderness is open - it's looks to me more like good tank battle country than wilderness survival country. It reminds me of civilised farmland and many of the forests look like commercial stands of trees planted as a crop. (not all - but too much of it) There IS still always real wilderness (forests) but so many of the forests now, you can see through from one side to the other.. easy to follow players, much more difficult to hide.. more difficult to hunt. Most forest does not look any more like a place you would find wild boar or deer. I know many of the old solo players from the mod agree - there are threads repeating this. AND on top of the rest, the 'wild' areas are not only open farmland in many cases, they are ALSO being built up. Urban civilisation seems to be taking over. OK - so maybe the SA will be a different game for wilderness and survival - we shall see. But I worry about it. There are roads and tracks all over the north - the only main advantage of tracks in the mods was that gangs of bandits could drive around fast wasting anything they found. Now there are MANY tracks. OK - that's my rant/complaint. Maybe the old system of wilderness survival will be replaced with a good new system. At the moment I haven't heard anything about a new system (apart from stone fireplaces and cooking on primus stoves). Why not just cut logs with an axe, make a campfire, cook your meat boil your water, and move on.... is that no longer possible? But all those roads, together with all the players who want to shoot from cars, makes me think of GTA... maybe I'm just a complainer? Finally, it's pretty hard to hide in a tree now.. you have to find a GOOD tree, and just lying down under overgrown branches doesn't work any more, as you spawn standing up (so in the country you log in already vulnerable and at least partly in the open) Scuse me - my rant.     But DayZ doesn't have to be like this. That's why I'm always going to advocate the simulator approach to the development of this game. I'm hoping that vehicles have authentic controls, for example cars should have all of the 3 pedals and 5/6 gears mapped to the keyboard (or just ahev an increase gear/decrease gear buttons). Helicopters might be more of an issue because you have to have a joystick + pedal combo to control one ~realistically, but the Take on Helicopters: normal mode type of controls would suffice in this case methinks. This would increase the value of people who can drive. Medicine is the same. They should assign medical substances to cure the diseases they would cure in real life. This would increase the value of doctors/medics. My point is, they could make just another game that wastes your time, or they could make a game that can actually teach you something practical. I also need to make the point, that once more features, like base building, are added and if the managing of these things required teamwork, that would encourage teamwork. And lastly, I wouldn't necessarily call games like WoW timewasters. People need to socialize, and if that's where you do most of your free time social interactions, and have friends that play the game with you, that's not procrastination. I hope this makes sense. I'm kinda tired, so making coherent posts might not happen on my part right now.
  13. I sure hope so. At least in encouraging folks to be more mobile. They can stay along the coast, I'm fine with that, but just sitting in Cherno/Elektro/Berez/Svetlo is sort of silly. But as always, I think the "flow" (i.e. where people go) will be more various once a variety of systems are fully implemented. Like threatening zombies. If the main cities are packed with zombies, then I doubt as many newspawns would venture in. Vehicles. Increased significance of hunger/thirst. Weather. Persistent storage (big one). Construction. Maintaining weapons. Ammo rarity. Are all factors which dictate where people go.

    "Be Quiet" Gesture Animation

    I think it was inbound, I swear I remember reading something on Reddit saying they were working on it. I never really saw the use in gestures, at least in the opening stages of player interaction. I'd much rather have my weapon out than be pressing my finger to my lips to gesture to be quiet. If only because of the clumsy transitions inherent in RV (and all video games for that matter). Where it makes sense, is with folks in your group. But even then, like you say, these people probably communicate via TS. Which further exemplifies how third-party comms programs are a detriment. This is a mechanic which would be wholly useful and rewarding if third-party comms programs were a non-issue. Same with whispering. Same with walkie talkies. Same with in-game radio stations. Same with vehicles. Same with squad coordination. All decent in-game mechanics rendered irrelevant/useless or made exponentially easier by the use of third-party comms programs.

Epoch is what most people call easy mode since almost every server is focused on pvp and base building...giving you easy loot, extra loot, good starting gear, 1000+ vehicles, side missions and safezones <_< etc. to attract more players, actually the wrong type of player for what DayZ is supposed to be, they are more or less playing wasteland with zombies. I've seen a few players beeing relieved to find that there are also ( very very very ) few admins who want to make Epoch a good and hard experience similar to vanilla just with the features added from Epoch like building and things people expect to find in a survival environment.
  17. UK DayZ Mancave – Chernarus Epoch Welcome yourself to the DayZ Mancave, a great friendly server (Player and admin-wise) hosting a multitude of custom extras to enhance your play time with us. Your start on our server When you first spawn in on Chernarus as one of 50 players maximum, you’ll find yourself with NVG’s for those night time ops, a map and compass to find where you are and get you about, a hatchet for hacking down Z’s or trees and more, these are subject to change at any time. If you’re by yourself and you’re low on blood you can self bloodbag yourself, providing you find one. Our Debug monitor shows you your blood level and humanity at all times, as well as how many bandits/survivors and zombies killed. Vehicles, Auto Refuel and TowingThe server consists of 1,000+ vehicles, as long as you can repair one you find, or be lucky enough to find a full working one, it’s never been easier to get around Chernarus. Note that you can also auto refuel a vehicle at any fuel station making jerry cans a thing of the past. Ever driven around and noticed another vehicle you want to have? The towing feature will let you attach most vehicles to your car to take off to wherever you wish, if you’re lucky enough to own a certain type of helicopter you can pluck vehicles from below and take them off into the sky. Custom buildings, bases and Trader ZonesThere are many custom buildings in our Chernarus, with added barracks, hospitals, castles, supermarkets and more which makes gearing up or finding a nice location for a base so much easier. Building a secure base is a must in an Epoch server, making it difficult or impossible for other players to get hold of your precious loot and vehicles, build to your dreams content if you find the materials to do so, we even have a snaptool to even out the snags on floors and walls. The Trader Zones are where you can sell and buy items, weapons and vehicles, but don’t worry, God mode is enabled here so no zombies or players can kill you or even enter your backpack, and custom scripts make them a treat to the eye too. What else is there to do?Keep your eye on the map for custom AI missions, there can be great rewards such as armed helicopters and massive weapon caches, but beware they can be hard to get to as most are guarded by AI bandits, other players will also keep an eye on these locations. If you happen to kill someone or happen to come across a dead player and think, damn, they look kind of good, steal their clothes off of them, it makes sense doesn’t it?   18. This is not a topic urging the devs to add cars now or very soon. The reason I am starting this topic is because I have realized that I am no longer dependent on vehicles for transportation like I was in the mod. In the mod, the first thing I would search for was a vehicle. But now, I have no problem at all getting along the map on foot, although the transition was a bit lengthy. As long as I put one foot forward, I can get anywhere that I want to ^_^ I would definitely say that getting around on foot has given me a better familiarity with the map and an understanding that I must be careful no matter where I am, because anyone could be heading exactly the same way as me and at exactly the same pace. Now don't get me wrong, I am also looking forward to vehicles being added and can't wait, but I think it's great that the devs have decided to leave vehicles out until late alpha, how about you guys? :D

    I created my account very recently so I have not been reading through the threads for as long as you might have. I haven't seen very many topics about vehicles but I apologize if this topic is redundant.
  20. Has nothing to do with alpha or not in my opinion. The hope with the standalone (for me!) was, that there would be more "goals" than the mod... a purpose, something to work for. And there is nothing. Sure a real quest system would not work in this game, but even if the game is finished there will be no end game other than killing everyone else. And repairing some vehicles is not what I call content in a game, same as just more weapons or whatever. When the game is finished it might just be a slightly extended version of the mod, bit better inventory system, nicer graphics, etc. but thats quite sad in my eyes, then they could as well have continued to develop the mod, and all the "mods of the mod" can probably do much more now, than the standalone when its "finished"... We will see if this is true, but for me it sure looks like it.

    swimming far to the southwest, you will come to a small island where you can park a chopper wich will be spawning somewhere else on server reset... :D well, if there were any vehicles in the game as of yet but yes, you will die because: with the swimming speed and the current system, you won't be able to reach the edge of the map before starving the map is about 4 times bigger than the "playable" chernarus where loot is, and beyond that there is only debug area where you can not go or fall below the surface and eventualy die from hitting the bottom of the engine, but before you could get there, you would die of starvation or dehydration

    Ballistics damage?

    The UK assault vest may have ballistic protection properties and may protect the wearer from projectiles up to 7.62mm in diameter. That's what the standalone wikia says. Also says unconfirmed. *shrug* I'm surprised nobody has done in game damage testing yet. Probably because of the horrid spawn distances you can get. Maybe once vehicles are introduced...
  23. This is the 4th Special Forces Group Challenging all Milsim / Bandit Groups out there in DayZ Epoch. If you and your group thinks you have what it takes to assault others bases, survive on a map that you can barely find weapons on ( requires you to actually look and stock up on ) and go against elite DayZ KOS units or even those Care Bear Units that want to help the Pubbers, Then come on to the DayZWars Server on the EPOCH MOD. Show us what you got, get killed or even cry your way out of the server? I personally challenge you units to come and Fight. Server is up but will have more stuff added to it with Custom Bases and Auto Refuel. You'll have to fix your own vehicles though. If you want 15 choppers you'll have to earn it the hard way. Only the skilled dedicated player will do this. Do not need Cry Babies on the server. Come and get us, I don't think you have what it takes. ALL MILSIM AN OTHER UNITS SERVER WILL BE POPULATED WITH OUR UNIT and OTHERS ON APRIL 15th 2014. You are more than welcome to head on there now to start stocking up if need be before people get on. Because once we get on there We're killing all your asses. Good Luck and Let the WARS BEGIN.     What's the point of having cars if they don't work at all? I doubt they have even created new assets for them yet, which they have to do because the cars will work completely differently on a techical level because of the new physics engine. They have to get that working first, or see if it works at all, before it makes any sense for them to decide how the cars are going to work. The vehicles better work at least on some level before they are put in, is what I'm saying. Otherwise it would make no sense to even test them.
