Deuzerre 64 Posted June 14, 2012 Rocket, the fact that you proved interested in "no gun" to start with made me want to go a bit further actually.I'll self quote a post that had several likes in the spinoff topic that spawned after the 20 words one:I'd love it if we started with no weapon' date=' only the small Czetch pouch, and the bare minimum:- Czetch- 1 bandage (without weapons, dying to a random zed hit bleeding you to death would ruin it).- 1 soda (Not a refillable item. Those have to be found)- 1 can (sardines, whatever).Nothing else. This would compensate for sometimes troublesome to find food, prevent people from living off a nearly infinite water supply, and allow one unlucky hit from a zed/hostile, while the bag has to be upgraded but still gives a low silhouette.[/quote']/thisThe logic is that, as I said in that quote:Czech Vest is interesting for the low silhouette it gives, but overall it's found less interesting than the basic bag we spawn with, due to a smaller ability to carry stuff. I'd be perfectly fine with no bag at all, but having this small "Bag" would still be ok to me.The bandage would be there so that, if you're unluckily got hit by a zed that made you bleed, you'd still have a chance of surviving, as it could happen before finding a good stack. So just a prevention from a lousy unlucky bleed, but not more. Pain still there. Broken bones still there. Infections still there.A can for a chance to heal up a bit, and more importantly survive from hunger, depending on where you spawn and if things have already been looted in your area. And a soda can, instead of a refillable recipient. This is for the same reason as the lone can of food, but also to prevent the infinite water from refilling anywhere until you find the important reusable item.Any other items would be hard to find at home, or wouldn't survive that brought us to the beach. I might be ok with a random item between a knife, a flickering flashlight, or a compass, as those could be in anyone's house, and might be ok across the sea, and might help initial starting, but in completely different ways. Strategos (DayZ) 190 Posted June 14, 2012 I agree 100% on no gun and no backpack at start. But the other gear ... i think you need it as its pretty harsh if you get one of those bugs or lucky zombies strikes that breaks your legs. Also a refillable water bottle is fine, lets be honest in RL you'd just drink from the lake or the water pump.
joikd 25 Posted June 14, 2012 Change the soda to a canteen (for the reason that Strategos pointed out), and I'm all for this. I prefer starting with nothing, but this is a huge step in that direction.
rocket 16567 Posted June 14, 2012 I want to give people a torch, but you need a backpack to put the torch away currently. So I think people need a backpack to start.
boomnet@blueyonder.co.uk 17 Posted June 14, 2012 Torch, Knife, Can of pop and tin of food.No back pack, the decision to drop torch n favor of hand gun should be player choice, might find a whinney first anyway...Random spawn in ANY town.EDIT: Hardcore would be knife, matches, torch and new ability to drink direct from pump or lake. Wüstenfuchs (DayZ) 105 Posted June 14, 2012 I want to give people a torch' date=' but you need a backpack to put the torch away currently. So I think people need a backpack to start.[/quote']I think it could work great if you wouldn't give any vest pouch or backpack in the start. Let it be player's choice whether he wants a pistol or flashlight. And anyways if player doesn't have a backpack, then of course it will be high priority for him to look for one. You could make the lower end backpacks more common in the loot.If you remove backpack, finding something like vest pouch becomes meaningful, and people won't take backpack for granted. drayson 158 Posted June 14, 2012 I like this idea even more than just getting rid of the side-arm. Take away most of our supplies and I feel more like a lone civilian survivor rather than some military guy dropped off on the coast without the briefing. MrBloodworth 1 Posted June 14, 2012 I do not understand the need for no gun to start. That sounds punitive for no real fun added.
Strategos (DayZ) 190 Posted June 14, 2012 "I want to give people a torch' date=' but you need a backpack to put the torch away currently. Be much nicer if it took up say two slots and went in your normal inventory. Also as it stands picking up a torch quite often deletes your gun if your unlucky! angelomnipotent 28 Posted June 14, 2012 I'm all in favour of no starting gun. Going on the idea that things you would have with you are items you would find in a home: a backpack, torch, bandage, water bottle, can of beans, knife and matches, with an option to kill smaller animals with the knife but requiring a weapon for pigs/cows. However make the matches consumable, unusable in rain unless you take shelter, and have a lighter or firesteel a rarer find that has infinite uses. Every household has a simple box of matches. I also agree that certain items should take up less slots in the backpack such as a torch (mini LED torches that fit in your pocket, anyone?) and a sidearm really shouldn't be so big that it fills up more than half of the capacity of the starting coyote patrol pack we have now. Rainbow Dash 16 Posted June 14, 2012 I don't see why someone wouldn't realistically have something as basic as a backpack at spawn. I mean, if someone has a torch, it's LIKELY they'd have a pack, right? I used to live in an area prone to earthquakes and a torch was one of the most important things you could have, along with the obvious things like water and food. What better place to passively store this than a backpack?Think further in to it - it doesn't make sense that a new-spawn would have a military grade backpack or similar (unfortunately we are limited to this in ArmA, without custom made models) but more likely to have something like a rucksack or small container of some sort. I see people (ordinary citizens) every day living in a city, and a lot of them have some sort of bag to store everyday items. To remove a backpack on start would make about as much sense as removing flares or food supplies on start. Also I agree with Strategos' point. Some things in bags take up silly amounts of space. A small sidearm is roughly smaller dimensions than a bottle of water, but in the land of ArmA, takes up five times MORE space? The solutions are shrinking bag size or reducing the amount of space things like sidearms take up. Folding up and carrying around a rifle or shotgun is a different story.
