Is there a trick to deer stands?

The reason you find junk most of the times is because there is only one loot spot and it's general military, so the chances of finding a weapon are small. I have found many weapons: 870, AK-74, AKM and a PDW. But mostly just some random military ammo, chemlights and some random generic loot.

Thanks to all, basically confirming that usually it is rubbish, but if you're patient with the respawns you can sometimes get good stuff.

There's really no trick to looting anything... The best thing I found was an AKM with a couple mags, but other than that it's always garbage.
