Cell phones.

Recommended Posts

Right now, if we have to communicate with a buddy, we have to do it outside of the game. It kinda breaks immersion.

Now, do you own a cell phone? Chances are you do. I think it would be something cool to experiment with.

Obviously, there are some issues with the whole concept of reception and getting a signal during a zombie apocalypse. But still, it would be cool.

Everyone should have a phone number assigned to them, and once you have the number, you add them to your contacts list.

Obviously the phone would have to be charged etc. etc.

It would also create some awesome stories. Imagine, your creeping through Cherno, when all of the sudden, "BRiIIIING!!!"

Quite a silly idea, although, tweak this idea to the idea of the radio having a use. This is a zombie apocalypse, people use walky talkies to communicate in most of the movies and games, why not here. Say you could have a push to talk button and others can hear you talking if they're in range as if it was direct chat, but the person you're talking to can also here you. Also, maybe the idea of people faintly being able to hear receiving sounds.

A.k.a ACRE in Day Z.

We can only hope...

You answered your own question there - cell phone reception would not exist.

Radios though - a different story.

Make the voice chat crackly like it would be on a radio - best thing about the WarZ video tbh.

Still relies on earth based infrastructure and people to keep them going.

Depends how far into the future we're looking, I remember Dean saying something about DayZ being based in present time, but no mention of how far into the outbreak it'd be set (pretty far i'm guessing).

I kinda like the idea of having a cell/mobile phone and having the abilty to (on mousewheel roll) add player to phonebook if they also have one. Again it would have to be battery powered/require charging at power sources. Depends how much they want to do with radios because it'd be an either/or situation.

Phones could be linked to some kind of subquest - where you would have to "free" and FIX the transmitting tower in order to have cellphones working in the whole country.

Rogue players would have also ability to destroy it again.

More suchas fixable / destroyable things would bring quite immersion to the game.

(another tower could provide GPS signal and again would hav eto be fixed and could be destroyed, same with radio signal and ability to transmit for players to all receivers,.... )

This could be easily achievable in DayZ.

You guys know how there's the "Group" communications channel? Well, in ArmA 2 this is for "Groups" of people on one "Side" (Blufor/Opfor/Guerrilla/Civilian).

In DayZ group channel does nothing because, as you see in the lobby, every character is a group leader / in their own group (That's what the 1-1-2-F, or whatever is next to your name on side channel, your group name).

There is an ArmA 2 MP Mission type called "Domination" in which you play with people on Blufor, and you start in your own group... but later can decide to join groups seperately. In Domination this is accessed with a menu.

In DayZ would be more realistic to have to find the person in the world first and get a one-time Action-Menu option (scrollwheel menu) to "Invite Contact" or something. This could also create a useful purpose for the "Radio" item (Toolbelt item from ArmA2). And if possible, rename the 1-1-2-F or whatever to a frequency, unique per group.

Also, one time when playing team vs team in ArmA, a friend and I were sneaking up on the enemy hiding behind a wall, when all of a sudden we heard some guy talking quietly... than it got louder.. and we could hear someone talking back.. a bit quieter. The guy ended up coming right up to the wall we were against, on the other side... we realized after a minute or two, we were listening him talk on group channel over the radio... :o Do you realize, how awesome it would be in dayz, to steal intel from another group in the server you play in by sneaking up on them and listening in!!! True recon, in a crazy crazy world.

I hope this does get implimented, cause honestly it's kind of cheap being in teamspeak and no-one being able to know how we work, ever. Thanks for reading, and thanks for the original concept :)

This.

ACRE is a radio system and voice communication that integrates with TeamSpeak. This means that anyone using teamspeak to talk, once in game, will only be heard when they are near another player. Additionally, the 343 and 148 radios (And larger pack and vehicle radios) exist. The 343 is limited to about 1km, the 148 5km - all of which are affected by terrain. As you get to the max distance, comms become garbled. I cannot say enough what this does for the user experience. In dayz of course anyone could be listening so better make sure you have a code rubber duck :)

How about Walkie-Talkies instead? Anyone that has one can communicate with anyone within a certain range?

that would mean you have to venture into THAT PLACE!
