Middle age men who play Dayz

Recommended Posts

I had the disk drive. Still took a long time to load anything, and I credit the C64 with developing a lot of the patience that I have with waiting for things to load, and not just like... restart the computer when your web page doesn't come up immediately.

That thing made some very distinct noises, like that purring sound when seeking. Or the clacking when it may or may not give up with an error.

I still play "Lords of Conquest" sometimes on an emulator. With music off, usually. Took forever to load the songs, and they'd halt execution until they were done playing. Really fun strategy game though, and the randomized maps kept it fresh.

my first:

sometimes the performance I get in DayZ makes me think I'm still playing on that thing

edit: why is this forum so picky about what images it displays? I see it when I'm editing my post, but then it just posts a link

Come at me.

You got my spectrum!.. I played weeks and weeks of Darkside and Sentinel on this.

Haha, I'm always impressed when seeing these old machines and hearing people talk about playing on them :)

I started out with a NES system, but I probably could have started with something slightly older if I just had been introduced to it. I got seriously hooked on the NES and wasted looooads of hours on that thing. My childhood is basically NES and LEGO, best toys ever! :)

I'm far from middle age though, closing in on thirty now. But on the other hand, if someone presents some statistics on average age for the video gaming community I'd probably be old... All those 5 year olds really push the average age down...

I have no idea what that thing in the picture is, but I remember playing Pong in my 'early days' in the 80's. But that thing had like 3 buttons, one of which was the on/off switch. :D

And this was way before I spend time in the Dutch Army as a conscript some 25 years ago. (weapons, FN FAL and a Carl Gustav mk2)

I remember something that looked even more basic than that, have no clue what it was called though.

Anyone remember this, have some fond memories of this little machine.

ATARI, that was my first. Then Nintendo and Super Mario!!! Blew my mind when I found out you can skip worlds.

I'm only in my 20s, but my first system was a Sega Genesis, but over the years I've collected systems from the 80s.

I'm also not a middle aged man lol, but I felt like adding to the topic >.<

Given that virtually everyone in this thread has already posted in yours, that should be fair.

How old are you Pendragon? Your profile says 1903 or something like that, which makes me slightly skeptical.

anyone remember the nintendo trick where you had to slide one game on top of the other to get it to work? man that shit was aggravating. I could only imagine the frustration from those rustic cassette looking things...

What you don't believe a 109 year old man would play DayZ? How closed minded of you! ;)

I am mentally 12, who looks to be 20 something in my 40 somethings, with 3 toddlers, 2 of which are 3, and 1 is 2, I have 2 dogs, 1 wife, and a cat who loves my neighbor!

Battlezone ftw ! My uncle had to kick us outside because we were glued to the box when went over to his place to play the 2600. Had way more fun on one of these than i ever did on the games though..lived on a massive hill in the Blue Mountains so it was death defying fun every day :)

Pac Man and Space Invaders were great. Later I had a Spectrum 48k too. Waiting for the game to load was always a ceremony.

I had the ZX81 but could never get it to load games off of the tap recorder. How little has change, took me ages to get Dayz running.

There are no middle aged men on the internet. Pics or it didn't happen.

The Internet is full of middle age men, most going blind ;)

Anyone remember the TAPE DRIVE on the C64?

Like, press play, fuck off somewhere for 20 mins... come back, flip it over and play again... go away 10 more mins... come back "ERROR LOADING" FUCK! Start over... 8 attempts later it finally works. You play the game for 5 mins "this blows"... neeeeext!

~Sol

I had to use this "dataset" (german product name) before i got the floppy disk. When the game didn't load we used a little screwdriver to adjust the read mechanism (don't know the correct word). And sometimes it took ages until it was working. Great times...
