Slower Zombies.. Has this been talked about?

Recommended Posts

I've looked around but I couldn't find any topics about this so I'm extreamly sorry if it has been talked about. I began looking into DayZ by watching Youtube videos of the game. I know I'm not alone when I say that the zombies looked like they are on speed. I'm a huge fan of the slower zombies in large numbers. I know it makes things a little easier quote 'Barbara from Night of the Living Dead', "They are so slow, we could just run right past them."

I know the mind frame is a bit more the days on a level of needing some serious challenge, but it really starts taking away from what a zombie is. Now these days its more these "infected" things where they are more humans with a virus running through them. I am just hoping and wishing that perhaps this game won't stay closed to modding. I know it's really easy to just make the zombies stop running and even make it so the only way you can kill them is by shooting them in the head. On the private server I am playing on, this is how it is and I really enjoy it. But hearing about the final release being fast zombies makes me cring and hope it doesn't happen.

Am I alone on this? And I really think that if you have not tried it with no running zombies you really should. Its still very enjoyable. Maybe add zombie dogs to replace the running zombies?

yeah that would make it too easy. zombies aren't just what romero says they are btw...

the problem is that slower zombies are only threatening in large enough numbers, and we're talking about hundreds and hundreds in a big city, meaning that if you were to go inside cherno, instead of the 20-40 that spawns now, there would have to be around 100 to 200 for them to pose any real threat to any player. The main problem with this is the huge impact on the server CPU, every zombie is essentially a bot, which takes a small amount of CPU power to calculate what the heck it should do, and how to react based on the AI. Now imagine having ton of people in cherno, electro, north airfield and few other major areas, the amount of zombies that would spawn would be enough to basically bring the server either down, or impact the performance in general in a major way. I hate fast Bolt zombies myself and would love to take slow Romero style classic zombies instead but I'm afraid on the impact they might have on players own performance (not all of us own PC's capable of running fifty copies of Arma 2 with all settings on ultra high at the same time). And the server stability.

would it be possible to run zombies over a sort of hive mind? and then split into smaller hive minds as necessary.

Slow or fast, I find doors and gates 100X more dangerous then zombies. I completely and totally ignore the infected. Just stepping into a building (which you kinda gotta do for loot anyway) pretty much nullifies their threat completely. If you have a hatchet, its just another chore to do before you get back to playing.

That sounds like some sort of crude version of the Skynet. I'd imagine in theory it would be possible to code it so that the zombie AI was on a separate HIVE which either all of the servers were connected, or there would be several HIVE's to connect to based on how much they have available CPU power. I don't know if the current engine used is capable of that but it could be implemented on the DayZ standalone if they are going to use a modified engine or completely new one. I would suggest not to though, because that's how the end of mankind and the rule of the machines usually starts.

I'm sure Remero isn't the only one with the slow zombie idea and I'm not saying all shows have slow zombies. The server I played on made the zombie count into around the 200 number. And there are a ton of them! And I'm not even saying that the game should be forced to have slow zombies. I'm just hoping that it stays open for those who want to do a little changes to it and make them slow. And yes, slower zombies does make it a little easier but pvp plays a role in there and if they could add a creature that is faster like a dog.. Then I think it would be a nice balance. I don't think Remero wrote resident evil and the zobies in the first one were slow. As far as head shots.. I've taken out zombies without a headshot. This was something they actually changed on the server I play on.

looks like I confused you by using the word hive. let's go for "collective consciousness".

Zombies were always slow in films before Romero started. The first film with fast zombies in I remember was Return Of The Living Dead. And they were indestructable.

I think if slow zombies were added in game it would need to be balanced by them not losing track of you when you ran behind a wall and into a building (so it would be easier to get trapped) and to make them able to grab you and hold you stationary for a few secs while they bit you if you passed close enough. That should make people a bit more careful around them at least...

These ARE slow zombies. Before they were so fast they would literally zig zag warp behind you. These zombies are really easy to kill

All the zombies on all the servers connected telepathically by a central positronic brain? I'd vote for that

Slower Zombies? Maybe if they crank up the zombie population by 300 or 400 percent.

Current zombies are really nothing but stand ins for what is going to be added in standalone. Don't expect them to remain the same. They've already be changed several times and each small change affected how players interacted with them.

I'd really like to see both, tied to the life cycle of the poor fuckers.

A fresher victim of infection would have strong ligaments and muscles, and one further along, neglecting its personal safety, diet, and generally being shitty would slow down.

With increased numbers and damage of zombies, along with a realistic fatigue system. It would make DayZ really realllyy scary. Creeping death is horrible. Ecspecialy when your out of breath and just can't run anymore so you barricade that farm door only to watch them slowly but surely knock it down. You check your ammo to see if you have enough ammo to take the horde the approaches, you don't.

Suddenly you hear shots being fired from outside and someone roaring to get outa there!

Awww my perfect DayZ, like a book or something hmmm oh well.

I wouldn't mind a few slow zombies, if they had a ton of health or something. (Maybe they break down barricades instantly?)

But right now i think the issue is lag. 30 zombies for one or two dudes in a 64 player server on medium graphics, its a bit much.

If anything make the fuckers faster and more angry, Most of the time they arnt even anything to worry about! I want the zombies to make my heart race as if i just bumped into another player! And to be honest i would even still be happy if they kept the zombies the way they are now and DIDNT add any bullshit that spits acid at you or explodes in your face if you kill it to close, That my friend is the furthest thing from a zombie imho.

Zombies in DayZ are insanely easy to lose, even when bolting behind you at full speed. If they were any slower, they would be even more useless than they already are. I already only kill zombies when I get bored, because running through them and away from them is just flat out easier and less time/ammo consuming.

Are you still playing on 1.7.2.4 or something? In 1.7.2.5 the zombies dont warp and they dont automatically catch you when youre running full speed. theyre even a little slower than you. i dont have a problem taking down zombies even with a pistol since their movement has been smoothed out
